UnstoppableDrew: Was the streetlight that's in the daytime picture on when you took the photo last night ?

Yes, they were all on.
But my camera was nowhere aimed that way.

"I keep asking myself why is it that so many Americans were abducted by aliens. Not only met aliens, but were abducted. And when you take a close look, a vast majority of them are severely overweight women. And they were not only abducted, but also gang-raped by aliens. And I keep asking myself that question: why? Why have we never seen any woman abducted from Ethiopia? Or why have we never seen anyone abducted from Bangladesh or Nigeria?"

Well, as many have already mentioned, this is very likely due to reflections and refractions in the camera/lens mechanism. I think a good example of this is the "flare" one sees when taking a picture with the sun in or slightly out of frame. You can almost count the number of pieces of glass in a lens by looking at the flare in some pictures. I presume the camera ISO was maxed (as one could infer by the noise in the picture), and that this streetlight may have created this same "flaring". I will admit that this explanation doesn't adequately explain the proximity of the reflected image to its original, but it's better than blowing it off as the engine vent of the USS Enterprise (no offense to funny farker)

Yesterday, my site got 205,054 page requests.
If godaddy hadn't put the lid on for a few hours, it probably would have been more.

Total made from google ads: about 24 cents.
No, that isn't why I made the thread.
That is not a way to get rich quick.

I really though this thread would stay in totalfark and get about ten comments.

Tethered Aerostats (pops)

But sweetie, *none* of the aerostat pictures look remotely like your stree^H^H^H^H^H UFO picture. But several Farkers have now pointed out (with pictures!) that the original stree^H^H^H^H^H UFO picture matches very well with the daylight picture of the streetlight. See especially Au5lander's 2007-02-19 01:06:36 PM post. It's a streetlight. Really.

Either reflection inside your lens is the culprit, or you may have fallen victim to shutter lag, whereby you pressed the shutter and thought the camera took the picture, so you lowered/moved the camera from your intended target, then the camera actually took the picture and the streetlight was then in the frame.

/It's a streetlight!

2007-02-19 02:17:42 PM
Doncha think forked probably just didn't have the camera pointed where she thought she did? It seems to me that lens reflection would result in a more distorted/less intense image.

I just read whole thread. Allow me to sum up.

1) Photo, standing alone, clearly a streetlight.

2) In response to ridicule, submitter submits photo of an actual streetlight ... just to show us how different it is from the mystery object. The two photos are practically identical.

3) Industrious farker takes orignal, tones and textures in photoshop to point out obvious nearby trees, house lights.

4) With a little digging into submitter's website, farkers find actual photos of streetlights in and around submitter's neighborhood.

5) After sleeping on it, submitter posts wide-angle daylight photo of exact location in sky of mystery object. In lower left corner of same photo, identical in orientation, is a streetlight.

You can't make this stuff up, people. Comedy gold.

2007-02-19 02:25:36 PM
Wait .... Late entry !!!

6) tfmcopycat blows all doubt out of the water with overlay of mystery photo over existing photo, and everything matches; house lights, tree illumination, lamp orientation, etc.

1) Just because you don't know what it is doesn't mean it's not a streetlight.

2) Your refusal to accept that there is even the tiniest chance it could possibly be a streetlight, due to any one of the proposed theories listed here is far and away the best part of this entire thread.

i've been reading this thread since it first came up, and i must admit i had SOME doubts...

...but after all the theories and stuff about aerostats i made a personal conclusion...

...yea it's a streetlight

2007-02-19 03:40:52 PM
Perhaps a streetlight that was removed shortly after you snapped the pic. It was decided the position was wrong, so they moved it over to the left of where is was previously.

2007-02-19 03:44:30 PM
So then... we're being invaded by street lights. Guess I better pack up the survival gear.

2007-02-19 04:02:34 PM
forkedatfark, I personally don't think it is an aerostat. I think what you saw was a streetlight, or more specifically a superior mirage of a streetlight or a Fata Morgana.

The superior mirage may cause the image (or parts thereof) of an object to appear:

* visible even though the object is actually located below the geometric horizon (the line of sight drawn from our eye tangent to the surface of the earth);
* lifted well above its actual position -- for example, a boat appearing to sail in the clouds;
* inverted from its normal image;
* multiplied and either upright or inverted;
* taller, larger or closer than it actually is; or
* shorter, smaller or further away than it actually is.

Which is why I asked you about the weather conditions when you took the photo.

Actually after looking back up it appears that juser2599 and Dr. Mojo PhD actually found it first.

Actually juser2599 found it first, I just wanted to make an HTML link for it because his original copy-and-paste of the URL had a space in it that created a Men-in-Black'ish Object Not Found error. Credit goes entirely to juser2599's diligence.
