rustik: Oh, and is it icy out? What probably gave it the tail was light reflecting off of ice built up on the probe.

fixed that for ya

Yea, I vote for street lamp. Kinda obvious. But this thread is still genius!

If so, there if a something that can happen where light is bounces off a body of water and is reflected upward onto either clouds or a fog-bank located at some height (happens when a warm front moves over a cold front....or do I have that backward?).

.....Seems I got a smack in the head by the illiteracy stick.
So lets try that bit again.

If anyone has ever seen a spotlight aimed upward which hits the cloud, then you know what I'm talking about here.

rustik: So what about the house, and the tree? Come on... It's night, you're aiming out of a valley on high zoom. Can you at least admit the possibility that it is a streetlight?

No, street lights are to the left and right and a hell of a lot lower than what I was photgraphing.

So what about the house, and the tree? Come on... It's night, you're aiming out of a valley on high zoom. Can you at least admit the possibility that it is a streetlight?

No, more like medium zoom.
Will see if I can use a flash and get more detail.

This thread has been awesome.

forked_at_fark, I'm sorry that you called all of this down upon you, but you seem to be handling it with good humor.

My alternate streetlamp theory? Do you live close to car dealerships or a bunch of stores? The shopping centers and other outlets near me routinely launch those giant freaking balloons and light them up with searchlights so that everyone knows that the freaking RoomStore has furniture at ridiculous interest rates. They're lit up like grandad at thanksgiving, move very slightly, and are tethered.

UFO? Probably not. Streetlamp? Possibly. Fluorescent Advertising? Also a distinct possibility.

Ok, I got my friend Jaxson and talked to him, he is going to get here on F.A.R.K. and look at the picture, but based on the detailed description I conveyed to him on the cellular phone he said it very likely that we spotted the same object at 2:40am here in austin texas usa. I will report back as soon as he confirms the picture.

2007-02-18 07:23:57 PM
It is not a ground level picture of a streetlamp.

If you take her original and reduce hue and saturation, while increasing lightness you will see that there is nothing surrounding the subject. The background is very uniform outside of the object.

I think this is some kind of strange reflection effect. Given the multitude of colors I saw in the background, I'm guessing there are a lot of ice crystals in the air.

I dont think she's farking with anyone.

I agree. I see these objects everywhere I go. I call them "streetlights."

well, it's gotta be a UFO. and it time-traveled backwards to texas. or maybe went forward to ... wait, what?

Why is this not showing up on the voting page?

I know votes for TFD threads don't count, but I thought once it hit the main page it would "switch over" so to speak.

it's obviously the glare from Jesus' 3-wood as he prepared to smite one of saturn's moons. But YOU took a picture, which is going to cause his caddy, the Holy Ghost, to look angrily at earth, causing massive amounts of disease and death.

WAY TO GO, A-HOLE!

Has anyone considered that if it's not a streetlight, and forked_at_fark's camera can zoom in so much that she can get a huge closeup of the moon...

maybe it's a satellite?!

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

If I had known this would cause such a foofarow, I would have taken more pictures.
But whatever it was had left my part of the sky by then.

The lights on my street go on/off throughout the night too. They are motion-activated, as are most of the ones throughout the city I live in.

I Photoshopped it a bit; you can see a tall fir tree on the right being lit by the object, meaning it's between the tree and the camera.

Read my post at 06:53:11 PM, and highlight the white space in the middle. All will be explained.

Here's the original form:

God damn it, people, this isn't something to joke about.

I'm sorry to rain on this nice little trainwreck thread. But this woman obviously does not understand what's happening to her, her husband, or her marriage, and making comments like some of these farking trolls have the potential to literally destroy a marriage on the rocks instead of saving it.

Get over yourselves, grow up, and shut the fark up, or face the consequences. This isn't a game.

Dude. I'm high RIGHT NOW, and I can tell it's a streetlight.

If it was that amazing, all hanging there in the sky, dripping light, why didn't you take TWO crappy pictures?
