(UFO)   WTF did I just take a picture of? I thought it was a planet, but it looks really weird   (web.ics.purdue.edu) divider line 1486

forked_at_fark: Could it have been a shuttle or the ISS, or perhaps a satellite?

If the ISS were a tube of mercury vapor on a pole on your street, then yes.

2007-02-18 01:52:46 PM
It's not a planet, just a large chunk of ice.

forked_at_fark: Could it have been a shuttle or the ISS, or perhaps a satellite?

I need to know 2 things:
1. What are you on?
2. Is it available in the States?

2007-02-18 01:53:58 PM
Silvara: That doesn't sound like an either/or option ;)

bah

forked_at_fark: Only cropped it.

There's your problem, most UFO pictures get more editing than that.

2007-02-18 01:54:19 PM
You people are impossible.
I was hoping that someone could actually tell me what that was.
Because it wasn't what I was expecting to see when I thought I was getting a planet picture.

People, I think we can all agree that it's a street light, but don't rule out the possibility that it's........The Loch Ness Street Light!!!

2007-02-18 01:56:07 PM
forked_at_fark what I love is you giving us a terrible picture of something you cannot identify after having seen it first hand, expecting us to instantly know what a stationary object in the night sky could be when it probably is a fark up on your behalf, the camera's behalf, or a streetlight.

2007-02-18 01:56:13 PM
IHateYourFaceYo: Here is a photography suggestion. Turn your ISO down to 100-200 and set your camera onto manual. Low ap, slow shutter speed.

I gave up when the words "digital zoom" came up, it's hopeless

2007-02-18 01:57:03 PM
I think you got your images reversed. The first one is a streetlight. The second one is a UFO. UFO pictures are always blurry. And shaped exactly like streetlights.

2007-02-18 01:57:38 PM
forked_at_fark: You people are impossible.

You have, thus far, shown us two terrible photos of a streetlight (or maybe two). We're only answering appropriately. Is there something in the darkness behind the streetlights we should be seeing?

mint-e: A streetlight?
Epsilon: A streetlight at night, possibly in the rain, possibly shot through a dirty window.
PhysicsJunky: I've never seen a streetlight drastically change its position in relativity to me
HickPrincess: I still vote for streetlight. Some precipitation involved.
insane_idoru: ...streetlight yet?
thgreatoz: I also vote streetlight.
PhysicsJunky: It might be a reflection off something else of a streetlight, but it's a streetlight nonetheless.
MikeHoncho: I think it's one of those lights you find near a street.
Lord of Allusions: Streetlights?
z_gringo: That would be a streetlight.
Silvara: I'm with the streetlight idea.
SpinStopper: So, it really IS a streetlight.
lorian69: The first one is a streetlight.

Streetlight.

I use digital zoom. I know it degrades pictures but if you don't push it too far, it can still be fixed with a little editing. It comes in handy when you need to get a little bit closer but you can't physically.

That is farking hilarious. You argue that it is not a streetlight then proceed to provide a pic of the streetlight that is an exact blown up blurry duplicate of your original photo. Brilliant.

forked_at_fark: Could it have been a shuttle or the ISS, or perhaps a satellite?

Shuttle isn't up right now.

ISS and satellites tend to move across the night's sky.

What I love is that people are trying their best to help submitter out and she refuses to see their points of view because... hell I don't know... she wants it to be a UFO.

It is a streetlight.

Do you have a wider shot of the first photo. There is no context there. It looks like a streetlight and that part coming down is light reflected off the pole that holds the streetlight up.

Not a plane either, because it has been about in the same spot in the sky for awhile

2007-02-18 01:46:47 PM

By the way, the thing isn't in the sky where I can see it anymore.

That is quite the speedy stationary object. Either it was visibly moving or it was right above ground level. Say, about the height of a streetlight. Did it turn off?

HOLY CRAP! IT'S FLOWN ALL THE WAY OVER HERE! EVERYBODY PANIC!

oops, that's just the street light outside

2007-02-18 02:08:18 PM
I think this is a test. forked_at_fark wants to see if she can convince someone that a picture of a streetlight is actually a picture of a ufo. I'm going to need more convincing.

I did NOT use the digital zoom on that image, only the optical and extended optical.

You people must be right.
I didn't know that they had installed a street light miles above those hills.

My friend just looked over at my laptop and no shiat says, "Streetlight."

It was just on my screen.

Heh. Good stuff!

Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people, living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the night

forked_at_fark: I didn't know that they had installed a street light miles above those hills.

What hills?

Again, photos need to be put into context.

Also, man made structure atop hills tend to have some sort of light on them.

Big hill + extra pole/tower + lowflying aircraft - lighting = BOOM!

pffft - get with it man - 'liter' isn't spelled with a capital L

you clearly give them too much importance
