A streetlight?

2007-02-18 01:32:15 PM
No, it is not a street lamp.
Not a plane either, because it has been about in the same spot in the sky for awhile

You took a pic of Unicron. And apparently, he's feeling a little bit down today.

If that picture was taken with that camera you're a miserable photographer. I have a 12X optitical with only 6mp and even under the worst conditions I couldn't get that bad of a picture, and I use mine rather exclusively for night shots so I know how to fark up a picture

It is a streetlight.

Do you have a wider shot of the first photo. There is no context there. It looks like a streetlight and that part coming down is light reflected off the pole that holds the streetlight up.

Actually, that would probably still make us laugh.

2007-02-18 02:25:48 PM
As much as I would love to snark (and I will), I will add one bit of realism here:

If you manage to catch the ISS, you can usually discern structure - not just a bright glowing blob.

Satellites generally look like small, bright stars, but move quickly across the field of view.

What you describe and shows matches neither of these possibilities.

≡ I say (shocker) streetlight.

BTW - if you really want to get images of planets, get a halfway decent scope (you can get one for less that $200) and a camera mount, and have at. A camera alone is usually insufficient.

Perhaps not, but your streetl - I mean, your unexplained object in the sky - seems to have exactly the same flaring problem as the fireworks picture in your profile. Merest coincidence, of course.

Using my excessively meager photoshop skills, I played with the image a bit to see if there was any detail other than a bright streetlight-shaped blob. This is the best I got:

www-personal.umich.edu

Having been given zero extra detail about the photo (exact location, angle, other photos to show surrounding objects) and the fact that the object looks exactly like a streetlight, it pretty much looks like you took a photo from a sidewalk (or other low location) aimed upward at the bright light that you somehow couldn't tell was only 20 feet away.

it is not a farking streetlight.

You keep saying that, but offer no details to back it up.

A picture of the location in daylight would be helpful. So would details of how the pic was shot - through a window, in what weather conditions, etc?

As it really does not look at all like the alternatives you have proposed, do you really expect anyone to assume anything other than streetlight / parking lot light?

"I aimed up about 20 or 30 degrees."

Well, which is it? If it was 20 degrees, it is a streetlight.

If it was 30 degrees it is a spaceship, with a levitating beam, and if you look closely it is levitating someone up to the ship.

That person? A streetlight repairman, needed on the spaceship's homeworld.

Why don't we let William of Occam sort this out:

William, what is more likely:

a) that a hitherto unobserved light source hovvering over some hills very far away just happens to look exactly like a nearby streelamp when photographed, or

b) Forked accidentally took a picture of said nearby streetlight and didn't realise it?

What's that you say Bill? B? Never! Really? I'm shocked.

You may not realize, but internal vibrations in your camera's action can completely screw up a shot of a planet....even when on a tripod. The moon shot showed a little bit of that, but since it is not a point source, it wasn't as noticeable.

It's still a streetlight. I highly doubt you pulled out a transit compass and measured that 20 to 30 degrees. Most people are pretty bad at estimating angles from the vertical.

It's definitely a streetlamp. I have one outside my window too. It's very annoying.

Every single time I leave my house, I have to fight my way through hordes of worshippers come from far and wide to gaze in awe and wonder at its mysteries. A small shantytown has sprung up around the artifact. During daylight hours the faithful mostly lie sleeping in their forest of tents and crude huts, but the lamp is never without some wakeful admirers. It's during darkness, however, that the makeshift village really comes to life, its inhabitants rising from their squalid berths to look raptly upon the mysterious glowing object. They perform strange rituals, and caper at its base like apes at a monolith. "I love lamp, I love lamp", they chant, dancing their strange dances in its benevolent light.

"Fark off out of my way, filthy hippies", I say as I shoulder my way through the crowd.

ITS AN INVASION!

2007-02-18 05:44:33 PM
Let's look at this logically...

1) The United States of America, arguably the most technologically sophisicated country on Earth, is capable of constructing earth orbit manned spacecraft that cannot be seen by radar nor most other means of detection. This same country can also send unmanned probes to the edges of the Solar System, but is probably nowhere near sending manned spacecraft out of the inner part of the Solar System and returning it home (yes, Mars is part of the inner Solar System).

2) It's pretty much a given that other alien races exist. Whether any others exist in this part of the Milky Way Galaxy is anyone's guess, but the evidence would suggest there's nobody out there that is listening and capable of responding out to about 50-60 light years. Face it, we as a planet have been squawking like a newborn to the galaxy since radio came out. If they were out there and could respond, we'd have heard by now...or at least heard their version of Rush Limbaugh gripping about Liberal Gennksdiipndhhhs.

3) Anyone visiting here would therefore have to have traveled from a good distance away. It is reasonable to assume that any civilization capable of sending spacecraft not just *interstellar* distances, but dozens of light years away from their homeworld is far more sophisticated than the U.S., thus would have at their disposal methods of avoiding detection that makes stealth technology look like sharpen stone arrowheads.

4) Xenfkhsdgashdfgdajmknsiii wouldn't run around in a scoutship with its headlights on.

My point is this: UFOs are many things, but alien spacecraft isn't one of them.

A UFO is what it is, an Unidentified Flying Object. I've seen one. At the moment it happened it was scary shiat. I stood watching it for 1/2 an hour until it appeared to fade. Afterwards, I was able to figure out it was the planet Venus magnified by the angle I was looking at it through the atmosphere. At that point it stopped being a UFO and became something cool that was explained by science.

forked_at_fark saw a UFO. Congratulations. That doesn't make you stupid, nor should it make you the subject of mockery...unfortunately this is Fark, so you were poked at the way that Farkers poke at things on teh Interwebs--with all the sophisication of a 3 year old with a plastic baseball bat. Good luck in your quest for an explanation as to just what the hell that was. I was lucky. You may never really know.

Just showed the image to a series of photographic experts here in Washington DC, and they consensus is there is an anomaly from the apparent light and subsequent light trail at the right side of the light from the viewpoint we are given. This anomaly, when processed through special forensic filtering equipment at our lab, indicates this could be something unusual and unique. Whether this could be duplicated in a studio set up, or an outdoor setting, is unknown and we wish to receive a high res file to investigate further.

I gave up when the words "digital zoom" came up, it's hopeless

forked_at_fark

I did NOT use the digital zoom on that image, only the optical and extended optical.

To be fair, she's right. "Extended Optical Zoom" on that camera is literally just a crop, not one of those awful "stretch the image out to full size" things. The more you zoom past the 12x optical, the smaller the resulting picture will be.

I play the streetlight, because there`s no place I can go
streetlight it`s the only life I know
streetlight and there`s a thousand parts to play
streetlight until you play your life away

You let the people see, just who you wanna be
And every night you shine, just like a super star
That`s how the life is played a temptin masquerade
You dress, you walk, you talk
You`re who you think you are

streetlight you can run away from time
streetlight for a nickel or a dime
streetlight but you better not get old
streetlight or you`re gonna feel the cold

There`s always love for sale a grown-up fairytale
Prince charming always smiles behind a silver spoon
And if you keep it young your song is always sung
Your love will pay your way beneath the silver moon

streetlight streetlight
streetlight - streetlight

I play the streetlight, because there`s no place I can go
streetlight it`s the only life I know
streetlight and there`s a thousand parts to play
streetlight until you play your life away - ooh

the U and the F in UFO kills your "he saw a UFO" theory.

U is for "unidentified".

F is for "flying"

that object (as it is a street light) is on a pole.

It is, however, an object. 1 for 3 aint bad.

raygundan: To be fair, she's right. "Extended Optical Zoom" on that camera is literally just a crop, not one of those awful "stretch the image out to full size" things. The more you zoom past the 12x optical, the smaller the resulting picture will be.

I still stand by my position that it's clear between the two pictures taken she doesn't know how to use her camera properly.

Which means 100:1 that mysterious image she's capturing is some type of reflection of the street lamp caught from a polarized glass reflection.

Thanks. In less than 3 minutes you all proved my point.

I never said that it wasn't a street light. Whether or not something is a UFO is entirely dependent upon the perspective of the observer.

I still stand by my position that it's clear between the two pictures taken she doesn't know how to use her camera properly.

No argument there. That camera has a good manual focus, but at the long end of the zoom *especially* in low light, the autofocus hunts like crazy. But the real killer is that despite how it looks, it's not an SLR. When you peep through the viewfinder, you get roughly the same grainy lo-res LCD image you get on the little screen on the back of the camera. It's hard enough to tell if you're focused at that resolution in daylight, let alone at night.

2007-02-18 06:01:31 PM
You know, all kidding aside, I was lying in bed the other night, and looked up to see this glowing light above my bed. It had these whirling "arms" above it, making a whoosing noise as they twirled, softly creating a breeze above my bed. I was so scared, yet mesmerized at the same time. I was about to jump out of bed and get my camera, to get photographic evidence of the object before it disappeared.

Then I realized.....I had just forgotten to turn the overhead light and fan off.

while "U" may be up for debate,

to be a UFO, the object must be "flying".

If it is not necessarily flying then the "F" is no longer necessary.

Thus, if flying is not necessary, the term would be "UO"

therefore, as streetlight cannot fly, it cannot be a UFO.

If you were at 48x zoom, the trailers likely came from your camera's stabilizer - an internal gyroscope that fixes your shaky hand. Software corrects for the rest of it, resulting in the main image appearing normal. (camera software is not perfect)

Try an experiment if you have a girlfriend:
Have her take a normal picture of your balls from one meter away, and then have her stand 48 meters away and photograph your balls again on 48x magnification (you may need a football stadium) and have a look at the resulting differences.

And then, whatever you do, do not post photos of your balls.

2007-02-18 06:04:28 PM
Forked_at_Fark
Not to stomp on the hilarity of this thread, but it looks like you may have fallen victim to internal reflections in your lens system. Normally, during daylight photography there is so much light entering the lens from the intended subject that you can't see the reflected light from off axis objects in your image.

In this case, the internally reflected image of the streetlight was brighter than your intended target so it became visible in your image. The appearance of rain or fog around the streetlight is probably caused by the rough reflecting surface inside your camera's lens system (the wall of the lens holder). It is possible that this reflection will only occur when the off axis light source is at a particular angle from the centerline of your lens.

So this is a bit off topic, but my friend back home tells me some girl at his college wants my cock, and to send her a facebook msg. He basically said she admires my evil genius, so I'm wondering if I was diabolical enough in my phrasing. What does fark think?

So K-Man tells me that you're itching to be filled with all the little alpos that swim around in my nuts oh-so-vigorously. He also says you have a "dykey haircut" and are pretty smart. None of these things matter. Let me put it like this, Charlotte: there are two things a man like me requires in his life--blood by combat and kinky sex. I'm joining the marines when I graduate from this prestigious institution to satisfy the first need, since I can't die and be reborn in Ancient Sparta (my most fervent wish). So as for the second, if you're down with being mistreated (or mistreating) and choking down more white-hot love juice than even Achilles could produce (or sitting on my face, whatever kinky shiat takes your fancy), then I'll look forward to seeing you the next time I drop by home. Oh, and I think it would be appropriate to blast "Wrong or Right (I'm Tired)" or any other DMX song while I fark your ass until you can't walk without fondly remembering the hours we spent together as you waddle around in pain, but if you really don't like rap or something I suppose we can compromise there.

forked_at_fark is pure internet genius. Seriously.

Scroll up to the top of the thread, and read the third post (Technically second, since the first was the original posting of the image itself). Imagine if that post read, "Oh, wow, I went outside and looked and it IS a streetlight" this entire thread would have ended in under 15 posts of minor ridicule.

However, by carefully inserted insistences that it's not a streetlight, a thread that wasn't even that funny to start with is now approaching 500 posts of pure gold.

I salute you!

It is a streetlight, probably up on the top of the hill, far enough off so that it seems like it's in the air. At max zoom, you really wouldn't know where you were looking.

Just adjust the brightness/contrast:

i93.photobucket.com

Looks like a house in the lower left, and the light shining on a tree on the right. Up towards the top of the thread is a better example.

2007-02-18 06:54:32 PM
my two cents:

1. 48x zoom; are we talking digital zoom or optical zoom? If it's the former, that image could have been anything; digital zoom is completely worthless. Also, your lens is etched, probably from cleaning with an improper cloth or scrubbing too hard.

2. there's no real reference for scale here. I do believe you when you say it isn't a streetlamp. I don't get how you could think it was a planet though.

3. If it was a UFO, it was most likely a weather balloon being used to reflect light on a certain area, most likely for a military exercise, or an airborne flare such as those responsible for the 'phoenix lights'.

I used to live in Arizona and before that in California and I don't remember ever seeing this type of object before. . Attention, Subby!
.
.
.
No, you're probably not pointed at a streetlight, Subby, but you did photograph a streetlight. Light entered your lens at an oblique angle and then bounced between two lens elements at the right angle to straighten out and hit your sensor.

It happens all the time.

This is the reason that if you need to photograph where there's light pollution, you should use a lens hood.

You have any bodies of water anywhere close to you in the direction your seeing this thing?

If so, there if a something that can happen where light is bounces off a body of water and is reflected upward onto either clouds or a fog-bank located at some height (happens when a warm front moves over a cold front....or do I have that backward?).

This has also been known to happen on RADAR with objects on the water, where those objects are actually picked up as being airborne. Not exactly sure how it is this one works, I only know that it does happen.
....Maybe someone else can explain the how of this?
