MrDorkESQ: What were the weather conditions like when you took the night shot? Also was the "light" in the sky visible to the naked eye?

It was a clear night, with a clean lense, and not shot from behind a window.

Yes, there are streetlights in the neighborhood.
No, that isn't what I took a picture of.

2007-02-19 10:46:40 AM
forked,

My guess, is that the light was visible to the naked eye, otherwise you wouldn't have photographed it.

That is was cold at ground level, their were low clouds, and the air a couple hundred feet up was considerably warmer than the air at the ground.

I meant to say, after hours and hours of study, I have concluded that the object in the photo is <<DISCONNECTED>> ***CARRIER LOST***

My last post should have read low thin clouds.

i don't think you're stupid.
i do think you're not hearing people when they're talking about internal reflections in your camera lens.

you didn't point the camera at the streetlight. it is, however, what is reflected in your lens and then onto the picture.

why is it you refuse to believe that? why is it you believe that it's aliens or a giant planet that you and you alone saw?

forked_at_fark:

If your zoom was indeed at 48x, a streetlight that close to you would appear larger in the photo, and there are also no houses below it. So, I'm going to accept your claim that it isn't a streetlight.

It does have a similar shape, though.

I've photographed planets on high zoom that appear misshapen, and if your hand shook while you were taking the picture it could have cause some kind of light "leakage" thing. I don't know that much about photography, but it looks like you just photographed a planet or something that didn't come out right. It's possible, anyway.

On the bright side I doubt it's anything coming to kill you.

oddballgeek: why is it you refuse to believe that? why is it you believe that it's aliens or a giant planet that you and you alone saw?

Oh, I never said anything about aliens.
UFO means unidentified flying object.
It doesn't necessarily mean visitors from other planets.

I have admitted that it might be a camera quirk.
Though now I am thinking it might have been an aerostat.

Do they have aerostats in Germany? It looks like a US thing, and I can't find any info about a German program.

In the broader sense of the word, yeah, it could be a blimp or (God help us for the jokes) weather balloon.

Jclark666 Fata Morgana are upside-down

Sometimes they are upside down, but they are not always so. It is a refraction not reflection of the light that causes a fata morgana.

I work at a streetlight so I'm really getting a kick out of some of these replies. People confuse my occupation with that of a spacecraft from other worlds all the time.

don't know if anyone pointed this out yet, but this is quoted from the page he linked to with info about the camera, @ amazon:

Plus, the 12x optical zoom can be used together with the 4x "digital zoom to produce a maximum of 48x zooming power." so...i'm confused...how was 72x not working for you if the camera doesn't produce it?

forked_at_fark: Admit that it might be a street light. Do it. You know you want to.

/It is a street light. Your own picture of your angle shows the subject. It's cut and dry. Optics can be challenging, but you shouldn't be so obtuse about this whole thing.

2007-02-19 12:21:10 PM
I slept soundly after much meditation, study of ancient and modern texts, conferring with top level government officials, and I have come to a conclusion.

It's a wall mounted light. Much like its pole mounted brethren. Really.

2007-02-19 12:25:05 PM
This is the key shot. Watch it again. The Streelight is situated back, and to the left. Shot from the front and right. Again . . . back and to the left . . .

back and to the left . . .

back and to the left . . .

forked_at_fark,

Thanks for a great thread :-)

Sorry you had to put up with so much bashing, but you took it well!

I think it was probably the result of reflection or refraction, but I dont discount the aerostat theory. Keep your eyes open since those things fly on a schedule. Maybe you can get a better pic.

2007-02-19 12:51:41 PM
Why is it that believers are never dissuaded by all the evidence to the contrary?

Because, all the evidence to the contrary isn't entirely dissuasive.

1. Since you already took one shot of the lamp, maybe you took two and thee place where you took a shot of the night sky is a different photo entirely.
2. The pits and marks of the pole in the clearer image makes since since the pole's surface is likely not uniform.
3. The 'tree' pointed out in the larger image is exactly in the right sport to be the tree in the day shot.

2007-02-18 10:56:50 PM Prospero424 [TotalFark]

Besides, I've seen a radar aerostat being operated at night in person, and that picture looks a lot like one.

-I see what your saying prospero. But look at it this way if you will.

1. It wouldn't be able to be tethered at one end and have the other just hang at the same relative level without a tether on the other end.
2. Also the tether for an aerostat is singular and goes up the middle and splits near the top to the right and left sides to keep it level. Like a Y.
3. Also the reflected line definately looks straight.
4. The light reflected looks a lot like a streetlamp, and nothing like the shape of an aerostat.
5. She (forked is a woman) wasn't pointing directly at the streetlamp. But camera's are known to have internal reflections.

There you have it prospero. don't consider this a personal attack, i'm just pointing out what i know.

2007-02-19 12:57:56 PM
Well now that the earth has rotated and your balcony is no longer pointing toward the streetlight, I'd say the bigger thing here is:

How the hell did a giant streetlight get the far up in the air.

: Was the streetlight that's in the daytime picture on when you took the photo last night ?
