Okay, if it's not a streetlamp, how about an aerostat?

img160.imageshack.us

The military and US Customs (I think) have operated a network of Tethered Aerostat Radar Systems (TARS) since 1980 in Yuma and Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; Deming, N.M.; Marfa, Eagle Pass, and Rio Grande City, Texas; Cudjoe Key, Fla.; and Lajas, Puerto Rico.

They monitor aircraft around the US coasts for security and drug interdiction purposes. They are tethered at 500-4,000 ft., depending on the location, and they and their tether must be lit up by FAA regulation for safety.

Seems pretty likely to me looking at the picture.

I still think it's a streetlight, but to play devil's advocate...

It could be a picture of a planet.

Just like the moon, planet's have phases depending on the position in their orbit relative to the Earth.

This page calculates the phases of some of the planets (pops):
Apparent Disk of Solar System Object

Rotate sideways to account for picture being taken in the direction of the setting sun.
Add in some artifact of the camera or glare and voila! Streetli... er, Venus!

Dude, here's your "UFO" (*cough* streetlight *cough*) and the picture of your street that Gaboo found on your website that you took from the same location showing the streetlight that has always been there, put together in blinky goodness.

It's a streetlight. Probably taken from the same location from your window even.

Yeah right, like anyone in this thread is gonna say "Hey that's some streetlight" just because you have some "proof" and some "logical argument."
ppppprrrrffff....Like that ever proved anything.

This "LOOK LOOK ITS A STREETLIGHT....ITS A STREETLIGHT" WAAAHHH, WAAAAHHHH, WAAAAAHHHHH.
BAHAHAHAHAHAH, they're all gonna laugh at you thats so dumb.

Hehe, what a nutty wacko you are you crazy people you.

Just a small town girl,
livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere...
Just a city boy,
born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train goin' anywhere...

A singer in a smokey room,
the smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on...

Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people, living just to find emotion
Hiding, somewhere in the night

Working hard to get my fill,
everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice,
just one more time
Some will win, some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

(chorus)
Don't stop believin'
Hold on to the feelin'
Streetlight people

Look, has anyone asked yet whether the photo was
a) taken through glass (windscreen, window etc)
b) taken with a camera that has condensation of some kind on the lens glass?

The first photo just looks like a typical through-the-windscreen/window-on-a-rainy-night photo to me.

2007-02-18 10:08:23 PM
it is a hole in a roof.

congratz jackass it's a street light like you've heard many other times and if you take the time to clean the shot up you can see that clearly. was it taken in a snow storm or rain or something?

more importantly to you asshats who talk about aliens and shiat. yes, they could be real and if subby. saw a REAL one then i'd accept but seeing a street light and the amount of you idiots who think it's a spacecraft and accepting that? i'd have to kill myself afterwards. you're all stupid. be ashamed of yourselves. i know your moms are.

Archui: Streetli... er, Venus!

ding ding ding!!!!!
We have a winner.

It is venus that has been overexposed and shaken during the long(er than necessary) exposure.

The line of "light" is the column that is reading the image off the chip and the oversaturation is overflowing the readout pixels as well.

Not a streetlight.

-good guess but it's a street lamp.

the tether wouldn't be perfectly straight.

also it just doesn't look like anything except a streetlamp.
