I dont buy the reflection story. Wouldn't she be looking at the streetlamp before taking a picture of it? How would she see it without the camera if it's just a reflection?

forked_at_fark: But, it's still not a farkin streetlight !

I tried really hard to believe that. I spent awhile altering the image to try to find it to be something else.

Then I found this article online, when looking for a picture of a german street light

http://www.ufodigest.com/germanhoax.html

2007-02-18 06:59:12 PM
Does anyone but me find it is scarier that it has been the streetlights abducting people, doing anal probes, making crop circles, and xenuing around all along?

2007-02-18 06:59:12 PM
Its a damn streetlight! the 2 pics are identical. just use "remove noise" in photoshop.

you say the light is gone? Call your local electric company and have them climb up and put in a new bulb.

2007-02-18 06:59:26 PM
I have a hunch we'll be seeing that streetl-errr UFO a damn lot on Fark in the next couple of weeks.

Farkin epic thread.

2007-02-18 06:59:51 PM
I'm gonna go with mirage/lens reflection of a streetlight.

/That woulda freaked me out for a little while too.
//Probably would have posted to fark asking "Why did my camera get a streetlight when it was pointed up? Difficulty: Camera not under streetlight"
///Wouldn't have gone green.

Has anyone guessed geostationary banana yet?

I'd link to their site, but apparently they've blocked links from Fark.

goeniegoegoe: Might I ask with what?

You rock!

I was helping him make something for his model ship.
If my site ever comes back, you can see pics of it.

elchip: Proof?

If I had known this would cause such a foofarow, I would have taken more pictures.
But whatever it was had left my part of the sky by then.

sacrileg: Any chance of getting a daytime shot from the same place at the same angle?

I would have to do some serious archive digging.
And then I would have to find somewhere else to post it since my site is farked.

You people are idiots. It's clearly CLEARLY a crying Transformer. Optimus Prime weeps for Michael Bay. I have no Photoshop skills. Someone Photoshop it into a Transformer's poster. Come on, it'd be golden.

I think last night at 2:40am I saw the same exact thing in Austin texas. I'm going out tonight with my digital camera to try and catch it. I used to live in Arizona and before that in California and I don't remember ever seeing this type of object before. I'm sure it must be the same thing, what time did you see it, it might have traveled to Austin texas usa and I saw it next. I think the other guy I was with saw it too, i'm trying to get him on the cell phone and I will post back here on F.A.R.K.

2007-02-18 07:02:19 PM
. Attention, Subby!
.
.
.
No, you're probably not pointed at a streetlight, Subby, but you did photograph a streetlight. Light entered your lens at an oblique angle and then bounced between two lens elements at the right angle to straighten out and hit your sensor.

It happens all the time.

This is the reason that if you need to photograph where there's light pollution, you should use a lens hood.

You have any bodies of water anywhere close to you in the direction your seeing this thing?

If so, there if a something that can happen where light is bounces off a body of water and is reflected upward onto either clouds or a fog-bank located at some height (happens when a warm front moves over a cold front....or do I have that backward?).

This has also been known to happen on RADAR with objects on the water, where those objects are actually picked up as being airborne. Not exactly sure how it is this one works, I only know that it does happen.
....Maybe someone else can explain the how of this?

/ The best "Maybe" I can think off.

gyoza1138: Also, your lens is etched, probably from cleaning with an improper cloth or scrubbing too hard.

I always use a special camera brush.

I do believe you when you say it isn't a streetlamp. I don't get how you could think it was a planet though.

With the naked eye, it looked like a planet.
And it was WAY above the hills.
I have live here for five years and there are no street lights way up in the sky.

I don't know what the fark it was, but I think it was probably a quirk of the camera that gave it the tail.

forked_at_fark: I think it was probably a quirk of the camera that gave it the tail.

The luminosity of the street light's reflection off the lamp post is what gives you that tail. The rest is likely reflecting it as well, but isn't light enough to be picked up from that distance.

So what about the house, and the tree? Come on... It's night, you're aiming out of a valley on high zoom. Can you at least admit the possibility that it is a streetlight?
