forked_at_fark is pure internet genius. Seriously.

Scroll up to the top of the thread, and read the third post (Technically second, since the first was the original posting of the image itself). Imagine if that post read, "Oh, wow, I went outside and looked and it IS a streetlight" this entire thread would have ended in under 15 posts of minor ridicule.

However, by carefully inserted insistences that it's not a streetlight, a thread that wasn't even that funny to start with is now approaching 500 posts of pure gold.

I salute you!

My brother use to make hot air ballons out or laundy bags, straws and birthday candles. After the candles burned out the bag burned it became like a zilch and dropped balls of firey plastic.

Any chance of getting a daytime shot from the same place at the same angle? The details are brought out in the earlier picture, so it'll be easy to match the two pictures up.

Don't listen to these farkers too much. Well, just listen to the funny ones.

maniacbastard: Settle down Francis.

Psst...

It's a cliche` post from some TFD thread about a year ago. Some guy came ranting into a trainwreck, and totally derailed the thread. Everyone then heaped abuse on him. Good times.

I will not settle down. Won't someone please think of the streetlights.

That's called 'outside'. It's right past the door to your parents' basement.

2007-02-18 06:54:02 PM
It is a streetlight, probably up on the top of the hill, far enough off so that it seems like it's in the air. At max zoom, you really wouldn't know where you were looking.

Just adjust the brightness/contrast:

i93.photobucket.com

Looks like a house in the lower left, and the light shining on a tree on the right. Up towards the top of the thread is a better example.

Forked_at_fark, stop being so dense.

You keep using that word...

2007-02-18 06:54:32 PM
my two cents:

1. 48x zoom; are we talking digital zoom or optical zoom? If it's the former, that image could have been anything; digital zoom is completely worthless. Also, your lens is etched, probably from cleaning with an improper cloth or scrubbing too hard.

2. there's no real reference for scale here. I do believe you when you say it isn't a streetlamp. I don't get how you could think it was a planet though.

3. If it was a UFO, it was most likely a weather balloon being used to reflect light on a certain area, most likely for a military exercise, or an airborne flare such as those responsible for the 'phoenix lights'.

She probably wasn't taking this pic from the sidewalk. My guess is she was at high zoom, and this house is somewhere near the top of a hill.

She said herself that the object was stationary for a long time.
