On a side note: Chavez should implement a vegetarian reform, the innefficiency of growing grain to feed animals to feed people is stupid.

also, the majority of farm land in south america is owned by american conglomerates and corporations, who in turn export the majority of the meat to the first world markets, this in turn leaves less food (meat) for the local markets, inflating prices.

if you want more food, simply use the land to grow veggies and grain, and more people can eat.

truthfully, boycotting venuzuelan oil is a stupid whimsical idea, the american economy is driven by 2 things, oil, and war's that americans can wage on other country's.

not that i'm one of those 'american' haters, but like, geez, heres a guy (Chavez) who is doing what the majority of his people want, the basic ideal essence of democracy is that the majority rules, and he's doing what every friggen poor person in his country wants.. not like bush or friggen putin or even harper, those guys have agenda's and are assh*les to boot.

it's too bad Chavez could never run for president of the US, cuz he'd do a better job than any lousy democrat or republican could probably do.

\\im a vegetarian communist inside i suppose.

AutmEleven: nd we can go through my highschool economics book

well, there's your problem - everyone else is using REAL economic knowledge, not your high school textbook.

go get a real textbook and maybe we can talk.

maxineWaters: our grocery stores (the big ones and on average) are generally only stocked by about six companies in America. The free market indeed. I don't care how we do it as long as everyone eats.

I assume you mean distributors that service a given area. There's a lot more manufactures than that. Six is a good free market number. It's actually bad to have too many because downward price pressure ends up depressing wages and lowering quality. The market avoids that naturally with mergers. A number of analyst have been saying over competition is the problem in the airlines right now and there needs to be one or two mergers to correct it.

Thats a good idea actually, it is far easier to conquer a vegan population than a well fed one.

It is funny how leftist believe that capitalism was developed without a moral philosophy. Read some Heyek or Smith before saying capitalists are whores. It is usually the leftists that throw out morals for the mob.

Who wrote:

How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortunes of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it, except the pleasure of seeing it. Of this kind is pity or compassion, the emotion we feel for the misery of others, when we either see it, or are made to conceive it in a very lively manner. That we often derive sorrow from the sorrows of others, is a matter of fact too obvious to require any instances to prove it; for this sentiment, like all the other original passions of human nature, is by no means confined to the virtuous or the humane, though they perhaps may feel it with the most exquisite sensibility. The greatest ruffian, the most hardened violator of the laws of society, is not altogether without it.

This is what Free Market thoughts are based on. It is the opening paragraph of 'The Theory of Moral Sentiments', written by Adam Smith. This is the book he wrote before 'Wealth of Nations'.

Hi!

Citizen of the Netherlands here. I wouldn't call this place socialist. Deluded maybe. Mandatory universal health care is being limited on all sides up to the point where you have to be insured... And still end up paying most of your own medicines. The quality of health care is going down as well.

Education is going to hell as well. Smart kids aren't rewarded but the level is lowered to facilitate 'high' level education for dumb farkwads. A degree is slowly becoming useless as the standards are being lowered to 'encourage' dumb shiatheads to get a degree. Never mind the fact they practically give away degrees these days.

Security is a laugh. The only reason stuff around here hasn't blown up (much) yet is because this place is too damn small for any potential terrorist to find on a map. Fortuantely, our valiant police force is here to protect us from... Driving 6+ kmh too fast on a straight stretch of highway... Or to defend us from evildoers who commit vile deeds such as eating croissants on the subway.

I'm not muh in favour of the dog-eat-dog mentality in the US The whole christian fundamentalism thing bite too; though guess what we've got in our goverment now? Christian-socialists. Anyways, thing here could be worse, yes. But thing here could be a whole lot better, too.

Bairon: Democracy, even if it is a socialist Democracy can do as it chooses.

Yes, I agree that suicide should also be illegal.

I can still think you're a dumbass for doing it.

To quote History of the World, Part 1: Fark the poor!

Chavez is turning into a characature of the Cenrtal/South American "El Supremo Jefe Generalisimo." He reminds me of Richard Dreyfus in "Moon Over Parador." Give it a few more years and there will be food riots and a People's Revolutionary Army that is gunning for his head.

2007-02-16 06:03:29 PM
You people sure do take your non relavent political issues seriously. You must all have Venezualen family members.
This is the first time i've ever posted in the comments, and the lot of you who seem to enjoy inane pointless squabbling have made me so happy, blood has trickled from my anus.
The application of your intelligence, great or small, to this subject, on this site, instead of somewhere useful or productive, is disheartening.
I agree with Ahmadinejad.

give me doughnuts: Give it a few more years and there will be food riots and a People's Revolutionary Army that is gunning for his head.

Like I said, in ten years this will be a paradise with cheap steaks, hookers, and beer once this finally runs it course.

I love how Chavez threads bring out all the people who are clueless about basic economics.

ChairmanKaga It may be that they charge poor people in certain neighborhoods a premium

Yes, because that's exactly how capitalism works. "oh, you people are poor? HAHA! Now I'm going to charge you double! That way, I wont even be able to sell the beef and it will spoil and I'll have to throw it out and then I make zero profit! HAHA! I'm a genius!"

stpickrell Free market worshippers, what do you suggest, or do you suggest that the poor just starve?

This HAS to be the dumbest comment in this whole thread. "free market worshipers" wow.

Guess what stpickrell. Do you think that Chavez is going to feed the poor? Are you really that stupid? Who is going to grow all this magical food for the poor? Chavez just told all the ranchers in his country that they are not allowed to make a profit. So, where is the food going to come from to feed people?? Please explain it to me.

Because here's what I think is going to happen: The ranchers are going to say, "screw this, if I can't make money raising cattle then I'm not going to raise cattle."

And next year there will be EVEN LESS FOOD.

I guess all you communist Chavez worshipers want poor people to starve.

2007-02-16 06:04:46 PM
Better put the border fence up at the Panama border because all of those starving Venezuelans will be heading here.

Naw, our muslims aren't much of a threat; they're too goddamn lazy and complacent thanks to goverment handouts/welfare/subsidies to actually do anything. They're just running around demanding that we overthrow ourselves or something because they're too inept to force us to do so. Who cares about them anyways. Also, any fundamentalist movement is, by definition, left-wing: in favour of mass control by the state and church, for example.

I've seen some seriously intelligent responses. Some of you have such a knack for citing examples. Some of you have an obviously firm grasp on economics and the role they play on the geopolitical stage. Why are you spending your valuable time squabbling with people who know nothing?
I'll be the first to admit i know nothing, i failed economics. I don't have my highschool economics book, because i sold it the day after i got it.
In all honesty, i could care less about that country or it's people. I care more for my own country and the people i see around me who are hurting.
Why don't all you smart, over acheiving posters get the hell off your hams and do something.
Just leave the message boards to the human remnants, so we can talk about anuses and excrement.

what a fool.

allende did this in chile back in the '70s and it pissed off more ordinary people than any other policy he implemented. it won't work, and it won't work in a spectacular fashion that will necessarily involve exploding black markets, price gouging to turn a profit, and regular food shortages. other stuff might happen too. allende got shot and we sent them the guns to do it.

if you're going to be a latin american populist, learn from your predecessors.

Look, I didn't mean to chop your head off... I get carried away at times.

But it just isn't that way.

It's frustrating to hear americans endorse policies like Chavez' because they are mad about bush or republicans or whatever, no credible democratic politician supports this stuff either.

It's just not a partisan issue at all. The condition of the global poor concern me a great deal... and I just see wealthy westerners (often with good intentions) supporting poor people in the third wold becoming poorer, because of some myopic partisan focus or ideological trend (read: coffee-house communists).

Nothing personal, and I'm genuinely sorry for being a dick.

Naw, our muslims aren't much of a threat

unless you're theo van gogh or ayaan hirsi ali.

i'm reading "while europe slept," and the author makes a case that the european idea of multiculturalism instead of assimilation is a problem--muslims separate themselves and grow grievances. meanwhile, they are the ones having lots of children while the native europeans don't--and that's a problem for the future.
