It only sounds like "aboot" if you're used to hearing "abaht," and you huff paint.

yeah...as does the rest of the English speaking world...ZED ZED ZED ZED...what the hell does Zee mean? ZEE? What a homosexual way of saying the letter Z

Um, well, it does match many of the other letters... bee cee dee gee pee tee vee... it's the only oddball besides double-u and the etymology of that is obvious.

2007-02-16 08:14:07 AM
Zed? That's how the rest of the English speaking world says it?

No.

We ARE the English speaking world. If you don't say it like we do it's WRONG.

2007-02-16 08:25:04 AM
I'm Canadian and I say ZEE. It sounds better to me. That rhymes so it must be true.

2007-02-16 08:36:40 AM
I'm Canadian, and I had a very sincere talk with a girl from Utah (we were in a hostel in Boston) about Canadian accents. I sat there saying "about" and trying VERY hard to say it normally, and each time she claimed I was really saying "aboot", even though when she said "about" it sounded exactly how I say "about". There was no winning for either of us.

It's probably the same as how most Mexicans don't sound like Speedy Gonzales, and most frenchmen don't sound like Pepe LePu (sp?).

On another note, it disturbs me how much of the Canadian self-image is based on comparing ourselves (for the better, usually) to Americans. The above commercial is a prime example of that.

Me, I'm proud to be Canadian because I can get a full-contact lap dance from a completely nude stripper, whereas most places in the states won't even let them take their bottoms off, eh?

*I* am Canadian.

We believe in diveristy, not assimilation

Yeah ... that seems to be working pretty well in all the European nations now, don't it!

Enjoy your soon-to-expand Islamofascist underbellly.

/I hear it as "a-boat," not "a-boot" from Canadians

Aboot.. pfft you've never met a Canadian if you believe that. Quebecois have a distinct accent. Easterners have an accent similar to minnesotans that's all you're gonna hear. Come to ontario and learn.

Bah. We have different dialects here but for the most part, other Americans can understand them.

Nobody in Canada can understand a Newfie...except for other Newfies.

It's not anti-Americanism unless you consider ignorance about Canada to be Americanism.

When Americans make fun of other countries it's usually just to twist the nerves of the hypersensitive. You call us fat, lazy and arrogant so we'll sterotype (sp?) too. Don't take it personally, unless of course you are a dirty hockey-playing syrup-drinking moose-loving Canadian.

Was it just me or does that commercial seem more like satire than anything else?

2007-02-16 12:07:26 PM
When the commercials became successful the actor moved to the US. I think that says a lot more than the ad.

that's funny. I'm from Newfoundland, which i assume to be "the boondocks of the east" and no one i have ever met or known from this province says "aboot". New Brunswickers and Nova Scotians, on the other hand ;) . . .

and i like my East Coast Boondock "accent" just fine. And most people find it very easy to understand me when i speak --- they have to, i'm an English teacher.

I think all accents are wonderful. If we all spoke with a non-regional news dialect, how would we know who to make fun of?

Says a lot about the actor or the country? For all I know the actor IS American.
