(MSNBC)   You just stole $6.9 million from your boss. Do you: A) Lay low and spend little, thereby keeping your new found wealth a secret? Or B) Buy a life-sized statue of Al Capone and hire Burt Bacharach for a private concert at your new ranch?   (msnbc.msn.com) divider line 106

Come on people, she only got 4 years so she can get out and start repaying the money. I mean she was making 40K a year, but I'm pretty she her career as a bookkeeper is pretty much over. And as an ex-con, minimum wage seems like a pretty good likelihood. She is going to be paying for a LONG time.

Asshat should have given the biatch 40 years.

I would have made sure I was debt free, and living comfortably, and I would have put the rest in savings.

Living off the interest alone would provide for a rather lavish lifestyle.

/would also travel the world

realmolo:

Oddly enough, if she had been the CEO of the company she embezzled from, and had stolen SIXTY million dollars, she probably wouldn't have gotten in as much trouble.

what if you were the 32 year old CFO of a NYSE traded company, was making $3.5mil/year to begin with and then decided you STILL needed to embezzele $77mil from your company?

http://www.embezzlementnews.com/2006/10/former_patterso.html

he got 25 years.

I expected someone to point out that it's "lie low" before now. Oh well.

People are stupid about money, this is not news... it's Fark, though, so keep the stories coming. :)

smart enough to steal millions...dumb enough to buy all that crap (minus the Burt Bacharach performance, which would be pretty sweet). She deserves a style beatdown.

2007-02-13 04:04:05 PM
You know what ? this kind of lax punishment just convinces me that if I ever get the chance, I'm taking all the money.

I'm cleaning the whole company out. every nickle. however many million it is.

you always get caught, so don't even bother pretending you won't, but it doesn't matter. You get the fancy lawyer and the lenient sentence and make off with millions in the end. Pretty much a free money thing here.

2007-02-13 04:06:02 PM
steal millions and have no idea what to do with it... apparently thats the result... spending it on crap... brilliant!

So is it normal for the same stories to come up over and over again?

2007-02-13 04:07:05 PM
It doesn't really matter what she did with the money. Embezzlers are pretty much always caught. Laying low does not make much difference. You will have your day in court.

She should have spent the money on plastic surgery. Burt Bacharach? WTF?

2007-02-13 04:37:12 PM
Rehoboth (they spelled the town name wrongly in the article) is only 15 minutes away from me. i watched a 10 minute new story on this last night....it was fascinating watching the stuff they bought through the years. DRTFA, but they said she was taking out $20k a DAY. I loved the pic they took of her husband, too, topless with his big ass belly spillin all over the place, lol.

Other than this, I hear it's a pretty nice town.

How was Wise_Guy able to see labman's post and then reply with a picture of Richard Prior and Superman all in 33 seconds?

2007-02-13 04:39:43 PM
Well frankly if you were that damned saavy you wouldn't be a bookkeeper in the first place... so this is pretty predictable.

Yes. Good lord, she has hideous taste.

Oh, and to answer the question posed in the headline, after the first million or two, I would've disappeared. You'd never hear from me again and I'd never work again. End of story.

The problem is the first million or two. ;)

A few things:

1) it's a shame she raised her children on stolen money. I don't know how they are going to turn out.

2) if you're going to be a theif, that's the way to do it. None of this "plantation in the Bahama's" nonsense....but a Ford shaped like the Green Goblin?! OH YA

"What was one of Platt's last major purchases with the stolen money?"

"A cuckoo clock," he said. It cost $2,000."

Dear John and Tricia,

I cannot say enough about how sorry I am that I stole money from you. As you are aware, Tom [Hodgson] has been working with me to not only sort it out but to find out why. Please understand I respect you both tremendously - to the point I never cashed the bonus check that Tricia gave me at Christmas because I felt so unworthy. Tom has asked me to delve deep within myself. I think I was trying to re-create your lives into mine hoping I would get the love and respect that I see so many people give to you. I know I was completely wrong in what I did. It never occurred to me that I was hurting anyone but myself. Last November I wanted it to end and I considered telling you myself but I was so scared. Please know that I am deeply sorry for hurting you - the very people I looked up to and admired. I am being totally honest with you now in trying to correct this terrible action. I am so sorry that I did this to you.

Sincerely,
Angela

Why? I never get the sense of why she did it in these news stories, or any of the one's linked in the thread.

What makes people think they won't get caught doing this stuff?

I find it amazing that nobody at all thought that she was living, shall we say, a bit beyond her means. If that is normal for a $40,000 per annum salary I need to move where she lives.

Platt's purchases included six talking trees modeled after the "Wizard of Oz" characters; a 20-foot-tall smoke-breathing dragon; a four-bedroom house in Rhode Island; more than 35 vehicles; and a replica of a Ford Model T customized to look like a green goblin.

Oh yeah. This one is batty in the belfry.

That's kinda how they caught the Brinks robbers years ago. The actual planner and Brinks worker laid low with a little of the money, but a man and wife -- partners of his -- started immediately spending thousands. Eventually, this caught the attention of the Feds, who noticed that the couple didn't work for a living. The idiots were actually setting up the planner to be killed because he wanted his share of the money.

I'm surprised there is a company in Rehoboth that makes enough money for this to happen, honestly. The town doesn't even have street lights.

Johnny the Man: How was Wise_Guy able to see labman's post and then reply with a picture of Richard Prior and Superman all in 33 seconds?

I was about to post the picture, and when I refreshed to check if anyone else did already, I saw labman's post and added my comment at the bottom.

Must be an awesome accounting department that doesn't notice a million dollars a year disappearing.

The embezzler was the accounting department. The same woman who stole the money also paid the bills, deposited the checks, paid the taxes, and ran the monthly reports. It was her job.

/Never trust all of your accounting to one person.

$6.9M could have been her path to enlightenment. Hence hiring Burt Bacharach

/But there's no 'S' in Burt Bacharach...
