They've got nothing on the Cornish and shetland/orkney/Western islanders.

Lets face it, nobody really knows what "English" is any more. Maybe we will all have to speak in ridiculous Russell Brand mockney accents to get any benefits.

I should have known I was in trouble when I first saw the Dunkin Donuts sign. If they could not get their sign right, what hope did I have of "large regular" being understood by the people behind the counter.

"Not just for the sake of employment rates, but for the benefit of the individual, their community and society as a whole."

As if people on welfare give two truds about their community or society. Welfare recipients believe that their communities OWE them something and that they should not be forced to work for anything.

I fail to see how this is "obvious," unless subby is from Britain. Here in America, it's the opposite of obvious that things like such as the following are key to that whole deal where you call yourself a "nation."

- A common flag
- Some common constitution or decree that applies to everyone who chooses or is forced to live there
- Some discernable geographical border, which once crossed, either indicates that you are in one country with one set of rules or another altogether different country
- Some ability to all at least be able to understand one common language or dialect in order to maintain...well...order

But, no one really cares about that anymore. It's sad that it is not "obvious."

Ahem, English, por favor.

Me: "Dave L: And a good chunk of Scots speak Gaelic -
You: "Not really, only 1.2% and declining, and I don't think there are any monolingual Gaels left. "

Well that's 58,652 Gaelic speakers in Scotland, and it's becoming more and more popular again for folk to take it up - there's new school/college on Skye opened that teaches exclusively in Gaelic - and I'm intending to take it up shortly.

Far from dying out, its becomeing more popular again, and with new ways to record and communicate with it, it's becoming easier and easier to learn.

Its partly due to the arrogance of a lot of English monolingusts that makes folk want to turn away from it to other traditions.

your troll-fu is weak.

the proper stereotype is that we thing everyone speaks english because the whole world is like it is here. except the only people who don't speak english are the brown people who mow our lawns, hang our drywall, or sell us out lotto tickets. if tv has taught us anything, it's that the english, scottish, and irish all speak english with varying absurd accents.

...the influx of non-English-speaking immigrants allowed to live in the UK as a benefit of the EU. Is't naw? ;)

I mean, something like 12 nations joined since 2004 - Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic and the like. (Romania and Bulgaria just joined January 2007!)
