The only National Nitwit I see here is the submitter.

From the disclaimer at the bottom of the page...This is a satirical newspaper, and these stories are fictional.

If you believe everything you read in the National Nitwit, give The Onion a try. Their satire is much more entertaining.

I prefer to infect hackers with trojans and other fun viruses you can find on the net. Rather than just clear that quarantine in your AV... save and reuse those bits!

Most script kiddies aren't smart enough to use good passwords and turn off file sharing, not running latest patches, etc... and had some fun with them.

Lets face it... if you have enough free time to hack someone's wifi... you can spend time re-imaging your computer.

rydub Do you happen to live in North Idaho, if so, then you are the neighbor who I think is stealing my wireless.

But its not really stealing, since I watch your wife get undressed all the time.

I piggybacked for more than a year and a half before I broke down and paid for wireless.

In my case, my city paid $7 million to wire the whole town with wi-fi, but it didn't work; after months of frustratiuon, I broke down and bought wi-fi from the trailer park round the corner from my house, just across the street from the wi-fi transmitter my taxes paid for.

Now they say they will sell the system to a private contractor, so I have to pay for something my taxes bought anyway.

Ducking fickheads. . . . .

couldn't he have just gotten rid of the wireless connection and do it the old fashion way? seems like it'd be a lot cheaper and less of a hassle.

It's this amazing thing called MAC address spoofing. Look it up. Easy to do.

2007-02-10 09:01:27 PM
Where I live, wireless is too faint to be reliable, so I crammed my D-Link LAN into a popcorn can, and aimed it at the transmitter. It amplifies the wave and cuts down on the side noise so I can pick up the signal.

I am probably the only dude on FARK who gets Internet out of a tin can.

Well, in all fairness if you turn on MAC filtering 90% of the script kiddies out there are not smart enough to figure out how to spoof one (plus you usually need hardware that supports MAC spoofing, as not a whole lot of common cards do).

So, flip on WEP with a shared key, turn off broadcasting, apply MAC filtering and for god's sake change the SSID and default admin password... And yeah, most people intelligent enough to get around all of that have better things to do with their time.

Like use your neighbor's unsecured, default SSID/password wireless access point.

/The point is not total prevention
//The point is making it as annoying as possible to crack

2007-02-10 09:02:36 PM
Right. But wouldn't you have to know the MAC address of a computer already on the network in order to spoof it?

I would have thought that MAC filtering is the easiest WiFi security method to circumvent.

2007-02-10 09:08:04 PM
If you are using WEP and someone wants in they can.

Realistically, most won't bother if you:

turn off SSID broadcast
turn on MAC filtering
change defualt router password
turn off remote administration
Set your router to only allow as many DCHP connections as you will be using.

2007-02-10 09:08:46 PM
Okay. I stand corrected then.

/uses MAC address filtering and WEP
//i doubt any potential leech neighbors around here are l33t enough to get around just the filtering anyway

The MAC address is broadcast.

2007-02-10 09:12:48 PM
MAC filtering and turning off the SSID broadcast will do absolutely nothing to even slow down anyone who's even slightly interested in your network.

WPA encryption is the way to go. Simple to set up, and very effective.

ImprovOmega: So, flip on WEP with a shared key...

WEP is very easily hacked. Use WPA.

2007-02-10 09:13:26 PM
This guy should get off of dial up before he biatches about having no bandwith. Even 56kb dialup would only take 1/2 a second to download www.google.com (~5000kB).

2007-02-10 09:17:00 PM
It's been a while since I read up on this, but simple WEP is the easiest defensive protocol to break. All the hackers need is to listen for long enough to get a huge sample of your data traffic, and figure out the Key from that.

It's like using a secret code, and never changing the key to the code. Like how the Allies cracked the Enigma device in WWII. Lazy German Enigma operators would use the same key daily, instead of changing it, like they were supposed to.

Next, not broadcasting your SSID does not mean it is invisible. It's just not on the name list for access points. Any simply monitoring software will still show it, as an un-named access point.

So .. WEP = not strong enough, MAC filtering = easy to step around, and Not broadcasting SSID = childsplay to get through.

Like people are saying .. it's not even CLOSE to bulletproof but it will make the casual thief simply steal his OTHER neighbor's wireless bandwidth because that is easier.
