"Standing in freezing weather outside the historic capitol building, just steps away from where Abraham Lincoln used to practice law, another lanky Illinoisan will stand and declare his candidacy for president of the United States this morning.

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., 45, spent eight years here, representing the fabled South Side of Chicago. In addition to the invocations of Lincoln's legacy of trying to unite a bifurcated nation, Obama's allies are reminding voters that Lincoln's eight years in the state legislature and one term in the U.S. House of Representative compare rather precisely with Obama's legislative experience."

Well thats a bunch of horsehshiat.

speaking well is a clear sign that you have the skill of speaking well.

It has nothig to do with intelligence.

It can make you sound smarter and make other peoole think you're smarter. but thats it.

Made me think of:

Whenever Colin Powell is on the news, white people give him the same compliments: 'How do you feel about Colin Powell?', 'He speaks so well! He's so well spoken. I mean he really speaks so well!' Like that's a compliment, shiat. 'He speaks so well' is not a compliment, okay? 'He speaks so well' is some sh*t you say about retarded people that can talk. What do you mean he speaks so well? He's a fuc*ing educated man! How the fark you expect him to sound, you dirty motherfarker? 'He speaks so well.' What are you talking about? What voice were you expecting to come out of his mouth? 'Imma drop me a bomb today', 'I be Pwez o dent!'."

He might have a chance if black people could vote.

/huh?

Epsilon: I like the guy and I think he's shaping up to be a great senator, but I just don't think he has a chance of winning the presidency this early in his political career. He ought to wait until 2012.

That's the biggest problem with Obama. The guy is very likeable and articulate, but just doesn't have the voting record yet. He's still a noob.

2007-02-10 12:09:35 PM
And to think, this was all made possible by the fact that last week, for the first time in Super Bowl history, there were not one, but two black head coaches for the teams.

jjorsett: So why's Obama considered non-White? His father's Black and his mother is White, so he could be considered either. Unless you subscribe to the racist "one drop of Black blood" bullshiat, like Blackness is some sort of contaminant.

If you asked Obama personally whether he considers himself to be black or white what do you think he would say? White?

Yeah, because those are his only qualifications.

olddinosaur: Walter Williams is black, smokes cigarettes, and a conservative. Therefore he is not fit to be President, so does not deserve the Republican nomination.

Walter Williams isn't fit to be President because he's coconut; he's also a guest host for drug-addled Rush Limbaugh.

Cheney/Jeb Bush 2008!

Only they can keep us safe from terrorists and terrorist sympathizers (aka Liberals and Democrats). They will also protect us from drugs. And the poor. And colored people. And make my stock prices increase. And bomb Muslims.

Or you can vote for Hillary or Obama and be prepared to be taxed at 90% so that you can babysit the people who don't work hard, while allowing terrorists to destroy every building in our country and approach Sharia law in every corner of the globe.

Your choice.

What is with Democrats and all these damn Senators? Where is the evidence of a lesson learned? (Can they learn?) Where are the governors at? You damned Senators sit down and let a Southern or Western Governor go for it. I'd vote for Bill Richardson, but not for these Senators.

2007-02-10 12:11:37 PM
Yeah, but his opponents are half-white and half-white, and can only be considered white. Therefore, he is black.

Uh ... what?

I'd argue it depends on his social identity. I am 1/2 [small ethnic group in the United States] and 1/2 Euro-mutt. I consider myself the first group because I grew up in that culture and that is what I identify with.

Who said Walter Williams does not deserve to be nominated? And besides, isn't he a radio guy, Limbaugh fill-in, and WorldNutDaily columnist? I didn't know he was running.

To be fair, I say the same thing about Tony Blair.

Especially during joint Blair-Bush press conferences. Man, those are painful to watch. Bush'd look better if he just said "yeah, what he said" to everything.

Simple. He's black compared to the other people running. That's how people think. They look at you and figure out how you're different from the other guy.

I'm not sure who you're quoting but this is such bunk. Yes, let's criticize white people even when they're complimenting black people.

I've often said Tony Blair is very articulate. I've often said Bush is not. Both are white. Colin Powell is articulate and was someone I looked up to before he 'took one for the team' trying to convince the UN to intervene in Iraq. Obama is also articulate. Both are black. Jessie Jackson is not articulate. He's also black.

Geez, who's really the racist?

Mr. Obama is described by GOP colleagues as a pragmatic left-of-center moderate. He's pro-choice, but also in favor of Mr. Bush's guest worker program. He's worked to eliminate tax penalties for married couples alongside Republicans, and supports universal health care. He also seems to be very interested in subsidizing clean coal and ethanol technology--no doubt in part because of Illinois, which has both.

I'm personally a supporter of Gov. Bill Richardson, but I would vote for Mr. Obama, should he get the nomination.

He's not black enough for the black vote and he's not white enough for the white vote. I suspect only people that want a Good president will vote for him.

But still, 300 pounds? That's a lot of benchpress for a dude his size.

Obama slapped me in the face once. And I thanked him.

olddinosaur: It says something about the system when the two people best qualified to serve refuse to run.

Condoleezza Rice is not fit to be President or Vice President. She's refusing to run for good reason - she seriously mishandled pre-9/11 intelligence and ignored input from Clarke and others. If anything, the domestic blame for 9/11 rests even more strongly on her shoulders than the President's.

Powell refuses to run because his wife is mentally ill, and a President can't afford that sort of distraction. Furthermore, she needs his care and attention, and the office of the Presidency is too stressful for him to leave her side.

Also, his complicity in the My Lai coverup, and his mistakes in the runup to Iraq would kill him.

Spelling, grammar and punctuation are also signs of intelligence! Sorry for the troll.

Seriously though, speaking articulately is a definite sign of smarts. Natural language grammar is full of complex rules that make comprehension by the listener easier. Saying you can be a good speaker without being of average intelligence (or better) is nonsensical.

I believe you can be smart and be a crappy speaker, but W has not exhibited any particular intelligence.

For a counterexample, see Condaleeza Rice.

Republican fanatics can complain away but the next election belongs to the Democrats. Again, Democrats have to come and clean up all the dog crap the Republicans left lying around Washington, our country and this time, the globe. There is so much work to be done.

c7hu1hu fh746n: Whenever Colin Powell is on the news, white people give him the same compliments: 'How do you feel about Colin Powell?', 'He speaks so well! He's so well spoken. I mean he really speaks so well!'

I think the reason many white people like Colin Powell and Barack Obama so much is that they provide a different model of black masculinity than the media generally provides. When you see that most of the time, black masculinity is portrayed as either religious and preachy or gangbangers killing each other for fun--then this becomes a breath of fresh air. Also, as an NPR commentator recently pointed out, the fact that neither Powell nor Obama are descended from American slaves tends to make white people feel less uneasy around them. They don't feel like they have to ask "Do you hate me?"

2007-02-10 12:20:22 PM
Unfortunately I don't know enough information on where he stands with the issues that matter to me. It strikes me as a bit premature to discuss his worth as a President based solely on his race and his ability to express himself verbally.
