If he tries even slightly, he will mesmerize defenders.

We have a professional soccer league in the United States? Good for them! It gives school girls something to strive for in the professional sports world other than professional beach volleyball player I guess.

Glasgowsfinest: If he tries even slightly, he will mesmerize defenders.

I watched the U.S. v. Mexico match and, man, does the US suck at football.

The first 30 minutes I swear looked like someone threw a ball to 20 middle schoolers. It was the most disorganized mess I have ever seen. It got slightly better as the match progressed (I believe I saw a run and maybe 2-3 passes connect) but at no time did either team look good.

If Zidane is alive and breathing he'll mesmerize everyone. The only problem I see is that he's used to have players like Thierry Henry run to his passes and no one near that quality is in the MLS.

He might as well spend the game passing the ball to himself.

the only reason I can imagine that a mouth breathing homunculus like you make the same comment over and over and think it's funny is that your brain is starving for oxygen. you should take the NFL sized cock out of your mouth and take a deep breath before you post next time and maybe something original or funny will come out.

who's the best player on the RedBulls?

also, what kind of sham is the league if they'll stoop to allow a whole team to be named after a product?

Tooth

US was missing some key players the other night, and we have had some key players retire as of late, and i'd say that only a 70% US Side, against a full strength Mexico side.

And as far as the NY Engery Drinks...a kid named Josmer Altidore has some potential, and they recent had that has been Djorieff or however you spell it.

As much as I enjoy watching Zidane (I have his jersey from the last WC), this is exactly the type of thing I do not want the MLS to start to do. If you're going to get a player, get a younger player from Portugal, Brazil, anything but a player who has already stated his retirement from all things soccer.

If this happens next thing you know MLS will be what all of Europe believes it is, a retirement league.

/seeing him headbutt some stupid defender again would be sweet though...

PonchoLibre: get a younger player from Portugal, Brazil,

maybe the MLS could be a farm team for the EPL, they seem to be having a hard time raising talent.

seems to me timmy is running out of patience with this stupid anti-fotbal(soccer) bashing, and i agree with him.
are we supposed to thread bash everything we don't like or in this case understand?

He is. Football is a real sport, thats his point. All he said was that the US isn't very good at it.

I think the fact that it's the most popular sport in the world makes it real.

2007-02-09 08:21:03 AM

Zidane to New York? Not many Italians there to set him off or anything.

2007-02-09 08:44:07 AM
back to the topic....
nowadays, rumors are true(?)
Its a warm June saturday in NJ, plane leave sunday at 4:20.
why not watch Zidane play?
he still is good.
I just hope Crespo stays on that side of the pond.

2007-02-09 08:51:22 AM
Well, Zidane beats Beckham into a cocked hat in the watchability stakes, unless your gay or female.

It's a delight to watch him stride around with the ball.

He has returned to his spiritual home! He had a good game for us against Livingston last week and he's available for Europe too.

I'm sure there's a whole big league dedicated to shuffleboard here in the states. But do I know anything about it? No. Do I care? No. If European shuffleboard super frazzle-my-dazzle stars came over here would it boost my interest? No. I probably would never even know about it, just like most of America doesn't know who Zidane is or even Beckham, and they won't care even if they do see the news.

America will never like football in the near future, if at all. The MLS hopefully does not become a waste bucket for European talent, because it really is a pointless waste for them to be here unless they're pursuing different motives other than football by coming to the states.

2007-02-09 09:10:09 AM
i hope he does good in the euros
I WAS a Hearts fan.
vlad is very wrong because he should have sold or benched miko first.

another ?
do the Ger fans actually wave the union flag and sing "rule britiana" in Ibrox?

2007-02-09 09:14:18 AM
no pretendo
a colleague of mine told me in 1986 that americans will never understand soccer because its "a 5 mile hike" to them.

i guess that why we live on a planet, rather a nation

2007-02-09 09:17:11 AM
expobill do the Ger fans actually wave the union flag and sing "rule britiana" in Ibrox?

Oh yes. I used to live on Copland Road in Ibrox (the same street one of the stands is on) and they sing it whilst on the way to games too. Mind you, there are worse songs that they could... and do... sing. Union flags are always for sale outside the stadium, some with the "red hand" of ulster on them etc. It's as bad at Celtic I suppose, with Irish flags flying everywhere.

/risible attempt at fairness towards Rangers there.

2007-02-09 09:20:15 AM
I won't pay to see Beckham, but I'd go to NYC to see Zidane. He's freakin awesome.

And as for taking it, I can take it, it seems like the mouth-breathing anti-"soccer" gang are the ones who can't take it

i just dished back, beyyyotch.

2007-02-09 09:36:55 AM
meh, this is typical of a North American sports league: Get a big name to attract attention and viewers and watch the money roll in. It has nothing to the product on the field.
I like Zidane, but the US should develop players and create small leagues and play in small venues instead of paying rent to play in a half-empty stadium.
Look at the Canadian Football League: small markets, cozy venues, and a fun product. It ain't the NFL, but it worth the price of admission.

no pretendo: most of America doesn't know who Zidane is or even Beckham, and they won't care even if they do see the news

most of America doesn't know a lot of really really important shiat like there were no WMD in Iraq, Bush is a filthy liar, and we are losing the war in Iraq. That doesn't seem to stop those threads from propagating.

the funny thing is that the people who claim not to know anything about "soccer" sure do like to come into the thread and mention how ghey they think it is. either those guys are afraid someone will find out THEY are gay. or maybe, just maybe, they are seeing the rising tide of American "soccer" fans and it frightens them because they know that for the rest of the world football is important and that importance might just take some of the spotlight from their beloved gridiron football. just a theory, but you all sound afraid.

people who don't care, don't click, and they certainly don't comment. you care. you all care a lot, I wonder why?

is there any more poorly run professional sports team than the NY Knicks? I seriously don't know how they make money.

What kind of salary would Zidane command? Can you see two teams forking out $250 million? isn't Zidane worth more than Beckham?

How many years would he play?

Arsenal just partnered with the Colorado Rapids. Press conference at 3 eastern. Name change is coming up. Coaching, player development, Stan Kronecke eventually buying the team. OK, that part won't be announced, but it's not like he wont be gunning for it, so to speak.

Just submitted the link.

Real Salt Lake got their stadium and will be building a Soccer academy downtown that will be in conjunction with Real Madrid.

Times are changing.

A complete sham. What kind of sham is a league if they stoop to allow teams to make the uniforms into giant billboards for a sponsor instead of the team names? A mostly complete sham.

MLB/NBA/NFL wouldnt think of allowing it (yet).

I would quite like a super rich American to pump a few million quid into the Mighty Hoops. Mind you, we're doing all right. We could hand a few quid to the beggars across the river.

WOW!

That's so farking cool. I might move to Colorado.

"The Independent reported the British and Colorado teams will play friendlies, work on coaching initiatives and develop players. The London paper also reported the Colorado team will visit England for preseason training before the 2007 Major League Soccer season starts in April."

I would agree, except that they generate the same revenue with the shirt sponsor without annoying commercial breaks that are 6000 dB louder than the regular play. allowing for 45 minutes of uninterrupted action, which is awesome.

so, I wouldn't say the shirt sponsors are a stoop. NASCAR? that's stooping.
