TemporarySanity: did i get a bad bottle, or is johnny walker red extremely bitter? it tasted like that part of pecans that you don't eat.

A JW blend master once suggested that red label might be best enjoyed mixed with ginger ale. That's about all you need to know about red label.

jack daniel's is like candy in comparison.

You are aware that Johnnie Walker is Scotch, right?

There has been some mighty fine headline writin' today.

scotch whisky. plus a "scotch" and minus an "e". is the difference bitter? not much of a connisseur, i just go with what goes down and gets the job done.

oh, and it wasn't my bottle. i (gladly) didn't buy it.

TemporarySanity: is the difference bitter?

No, your tastebuds work just fine. Red label just sucks.

not much of a connisseur, i just go with what goes down and gets the job done.

I can respect that.

OOoh a whiskey snob thread.

I like Jameson, from the bottle.

With a chaser of Lemon Pledge.

This 'immersion' science sounds suspiciously like it's going to make getting drunk harder.

Chug Wild Turkey with no chaser.

Why? It gets you farked up!
Also makes most people vomit.

//or beer. beer works.

So Bill Fitzpatrick knocks on Mrs. O'Malley's door late one afternoon. He says, "Mrs. O'Malley, I've got terrible news. There was a terrible accident at the Guinness brewery today."

She says, "O Mother of God, did something happen to my Tom?"

"I'm afraid so, Mrs. O'Malley. You see, he fell into a vat of Guinness and drowned."

She weeps softly for a moment, then composes herself and asks, "Tell me one thing, Bill: did he at least go quickly?"

Bill gets a pained look and says, "No, I can't say as he did. He got out three times to relieve himself."

JW Red's not bad with soda water.

JW black on the rocks in my prefered, however.

Still like bourbon better.

"immersive experience"

Sounds like a video game ad.

As a cognac drinker, I never even had the desire to try scotch until I went to L.A. on business. The limo that picked me up from the airport had a couple of unlabeled bottles and the driver encouraged me to partake. I was farked UP by the time I got to the hotel. And it wasn't a stumbling, violent, or goofy kind of drunk. It was a nice mellow. It crept up on me because it went down so smooth. The driver knew that it was scotch, but he did not know what kind.

Johnny Green is excellent, probably my favourite. Blue is really good too, Black is fine. Gold is disappointing, red, yes, red is probably best with Ginger Ale.

And yes, Single Malts are generally preferred, but there's nothing wrong with a good blend. The key is here "good" blend. There's lots of bad blends out there, but Johnny Walker is one that is done right.

My friend Adam got a bottle of JW Blue for his 21st bday. He's saving it for 40.

I couldn't tell wether the writer was trying to sound drunk or like Sean Connery. Maybe both. HIYO!!

Is it like in the movie Midnight Madness when they go to the Pabst brewery?

2007-02-08 03:47:35 PM
Tell your friend Adam not to wait. Scotch doesn't age once it's in the bottle. Only in the cask.

I like Johnny Walker red, on occasion. Neat. Of course, I'd rather have Lagavulin.

Back it '05, I threw a bachelor party for a close friend down in Vegas, and we did a liquor run to Costco.

Seeing Black Label for sale at such a great price almost brought a tear to my eye...especially since the state liquor stores here in WA rob us blind.

Once we got back to the hotel suite, I soon learned that Black Label is awesome when paired with a good cigar.

/Tried Talisker 10 Year Old this weekend.

excellent, quoting Thorogood.

as far as whiskey goes, a big MEH to Jameson. Can't really drink that anymore after 2 halloweens ago - buddy and I killed a liter of it. Ugh.

Got Maker's Mark right now, which is very savory.

My cuboard currently has some Glenlivit 18, Lagavulin 16 and JW Blue.

Blue is smooooth. (Having some tonight...)

Glenmorangie Sauternes Wood is even better.

Lagavulin is for serious Scotch drinkers. You need to like the taste of peat...

Glenlivit is a nice, non-harsh scotch.

Balvinie Doublewood is a great young scotch too.

/Don't waste your money on cheap scotch.

OldScotch, you really like Green Label the most? I like JW and all (black is great for casual drinking, blue is perfect for that special occasion) but I think the green is aweful! You can find much better single malts that are less expensive than green...

/TemporarySanity, yes, JD is sweeter than JW as it is made with a primarily corn mash, and corn has a good amount of natural sugar in it...
//and yesh, red label doesh shuck

Just for clarification, I'm a total scotch newb; loves me some fine champagne cognac... (Remy Accord of 1738) if that helps at all.

So how should I get started on Scotch? Glenlivet like TankerT suggests?

I'm not a whiskey snob, I just didn't feel like posting an Anna Nichole Smith comment.

A roommate of mine swore by Glenfiddich.

More of a bourbon man myself, but I haven't really tried all that many scotches yet.

One time when I suggested some johnnie walker black label to the gf, she made a terrible face and said, "That stuff is nasty! Dont mix it with coke." I just shook my head.

Glendromnadochit. Or something like that. The letters kind of blurred and ran together real fast.
