Very respectable.

"I probably would have taken it home and rolled around in it for a bit," he said jokingly. "And then called the cops."

Not to mention taken lots a pictures of it spread out on the bed...

Respectable indeed, as I would have kept the money.

/yes i said it
//like i'm the only one
///i'm rich, biatch!

awesome. let me be the first to say...

IDIOT!

i would have kept it also.

I'd be worried that being next to a bank machine, there are cameras!

If you don't turn it in chances are they will find you anyways.

2007-02-06 06:44:48 AM
I would have kept it, though my debt is not nearly so large.
Still big though.

At least he got 2.59M here.

While there's nothing wrong with returning lost property, I don't see how it's heroic to do so. Just really kind. And generous.

/Hence, I usually don't.
//Only generous with slashies.

Any decent person would return the money - it isn't yours, and keeping it is theft, because nobody drops 10K on the sidewalk and doesn't care if somebody else picks it up.

What we have here on Fark (surprise, surprise) is a deficit of decent people.

2007-02-06 06:54:02 AM
I've been farked over too many time being honest so I would have kept it. But at his age I would have turned it in

Predictable "Hero vs Sucker" thread.

The overall result will be depressing.

2007-02-06 07:04:20 AM
Hmmm.
1 buck you probably stoop to pick up. Probably
10 bucks you keep and maybe have an extra beer later.
100 bucks gives you trouble deciding whether to hand in
10K? You try and keep that and someone's gonna come after you, eventually.

/like the "roll around, take pics, then hand in" approach.

I don't think it's a matter of honour, so much as a matter of THERE ARE CAMERAS POINTED AT THE ATM that swayed him towards handing it in.

/five years ago, I would've kept it
//nowadays I'd hand it in, and assume someone farkin' rich enough to get $10k out of a cash machine would give it to me anyway

No... really? Well that explains why they are constantly howling for the murder of unborn baby's, supporting terrorists and pedofiles and want an extremist Muslim sleeper agent to be President.

Not long ago this would have been considered respectable. While the morality free people that are coming up these days, it's just considered naive. Imagine what d-bags people will be in 10 to 20 years. Crass philistines who might as well be vat grown.

You do not want the type of people who keep 10k in cash to be looking for you. The more money you find, the better an idea it is to give it to the cops.

Seriously, people. Think.

2007-02-06 07:17:10 AM
What a dumbass deluxe with cheese.

/I really think he was meant to have that money
//wait, no I don't

He turned in 10k, he actually found 15k.

2007-02-06 07:26:31 AM
Yeah, it's respectable, but banks aren't our friends.
There's a certain Robin Hood psychology at work in society.

Yes, it's rationalization. Hell, yeah someone is going to do their damnedest to recover 10k.

/if I find money with no ID, I keep the money

I bet it makes a big difference to the two schmucks who left that wad laying around.
Their ex-employer won't bring theft charges against them now.

2007-02-06 07:40:08 AM
If I found a 10k wad of bills behind the bench in the park, I'd pocket it and walk away casually.

10k in a brick on a shelf next to an ATM... and on at least two security cameras, with one that just got a clean shot of my face, with my account and pin number on file... umn. Yeah. That's goin' back to the bank.

Though I will be paying the $3 "Teller Fee" out of their stack when I go to turn it in.

Giving money back to a bank is kind of like giving money back to a drug dealer. It's dirty, but it's better than getting shot.

2007-02-06 07:41:12 AM
Agreed. Total dumbass. Banks are insured for loss by the Government, which comes from funds payed by your taxes.

He could've lived "tax-free" for awhile. Nothing wrong with that.

2007-02-06 07:43:43 AM
Anybody who would leave a "loaf of bread sized" stack of 20 dollar bills sitting next to an ATM do not deserve to keep a "loaf of bread sized" stack of 20 dollar bills.

Was this guy a hero for returning the money? No.
Was it a decent thing to do? Sure.
Would I have done it? Not a chance.
Would I feel bad about that? No way.
Do I ask and answer my own question? All the damn time.

50k in debt from student loans?.

Jesus.

I'm an Engineer with a masters in software engineering, I got them both for free, not one cent paid.

/Venezuelan
//Venezuelan education is free at all levels bwahahaha

2007-02-06 07:51:45 AM
It's Canadian money. Basically he returned $6 US, and he remains $30 US in debt.

2007-02-06 07:56:30 AM
Decent, yes, but more to the point, smart. The difference between being $50k in debt and being $40k in debt, when you're a student, is nothing. But that story, with its attendant newspaper clippings and Fark threads, will be the slam dunk at the end of the interview that gets him a $20k-better-per-year job when he graduates.

Also, he's totally getting laid by someone out of this. The bank will probably hook him up, if nothing else.

2007-02-06 07:57:48 AM
Boobies!!!

He actually returned $8597.71 US, and he remains $42,713.14 US in debt.

2007-02-06 08:01:38 AM
I have $50,000 in student loan debt and the most I've found is $.35. I kept it though. Mwahaha.

2007-02-06 08:02:14 AM
bah you're all missing it. I would have returned $9000, claiming it was the full amount "when I got there" and then spend the $1K on hookers and blow.

... :-) Be a hero and a sleaze, it's the american dream!

Thats why when Micah did it on Heroes I was all like "This kids farked if he thinks he's just gonna walk away" but noooo they let him do it and keep the money talk about lame.

Yea I know, but it needs to be said, also, if by 'Everyone' you mean people from the US, well, there are more people in the rest of the world so they're hardly 'Everyone'.

Ah yes, but I said Venezuela isn't America, not Venezuela isn't IN America. And by "America", of course, I meant that silly country that thinks they run the world! :-)

You keep saying you will keep the money until you are in that situation. Al least, that's what I used to say until I embarked upon a walled with $800 in it. I realized it was someone's pay. Luckly, the guy had his cell phone slip in the wallet so I called him and really made his day.
