There's a whole bunch of "making of" featurettes on the 300 site as well.

*whines* But it's not historically accurate!

/Don't care, it looks good, gonna see it on the 9th too.

Does it show the slave economy that the Spartans lived off of?

He started training three months before filming and for four hours a day.

Damn.

2wolves: Does it show the slave economy that the Spartans lived off of?

If it does, would you go see it?

Darkbladedancer, 2wolves

It's Frank Miller. Miller is the graphic-novel equivalent of Jerry Pournelle, but without the suck. He loves creating the ultimate manly black-and-white world of heroes and villains. Read The Dark Knight Returns - while it's an incredibly well-told story (Batman and the Joker themselves are terrifically done), you can see how Miller villifies all the elements of weak, liberal society and worships Batman's rule-by-strength vigilante domination of the underworld. The same in The 300 - the Spartans are the heroic, democratic, grim western white men and the Persians base, weak-minded, evil savages.

Everyone who is not a Hero is weak easily seduced by evil, or Evil Incarnate.

I'm starting to think there isn't going to be a '24' thread for the liters.

So is this movie going to be as gay as it looks or more?

300 is the first movie I've looked forward to seeing in the theater in a really long time.

Welcome to comic books.

That crack about Jerry Pournelle cannot stand. While I don't follow his politics, he is a damn fine writer, and when paired with Niven, they are like Lennon and McCartney with Sci-Fi.

Pxtl is wrong, very wrong.

I'm sorry, but I saw the previews for this movie and I could hear my college degree, emblazoned with the words 'minor in classical studies', weeping from inside the closet.

Spartan warriors should be dressed more like stormtroopers, not like a rebel princess in a slave-girl costume.

BUrp: Spartan warriors should be dressed more like stormtroopers, not like a rebel princess in a slave-girl costume.

I guess it bears repeating: Welcome to comic books.

Frank Miller and Lynn Varley never made any claims to historical accuracy. The movie, which follows the GN pretty closely by all accounts, follows the same limitation.

In fact, what I find more irritating is that people will gripe about stuff like this but make no noises when movies have:
-cars that explode after falling off cliffs
-bullets that flash when ricocheting off walls
-people that jump through windows without injury
-etc...

Let it go. Enjoy it for what it is.

Arbitrator FTW.

If I wanted to know what went down there, I'd read Hells Gates or Gates of Hell, or whatever that book is called (Google-Lazy today).

The history major inside me is pissed at the grotesque inaccuracies, while the gay part of me is already planning to buy the DVD. I also want to know their workout and nutrition routines, cause, DAMN, that's some kind of eye candy! I'd like to get that ripped for summer.

I'm not really sure what you are talking about.

the problem of course being to anyone who gives two shiats about history this is all dead wrong. The Spartans weren't even vaguely Democratic, that was Athens' gig. The Spartans were in fact the world's first truly fascist society, where all young men, at least those in the ruling class (the slaves did all the crafting and farming) were taken away from thier families at a very young age and trained to be soldiers; and to serve the state.

And as for "culture" vs. savages it Should also be noted that most historians accept that the Athenians,, from whom we get the basic guiding values, morals and philosphies of Western Culture, were in fact Ionic Greeks, an entirely different race fo people than the Spartans who were Doric greeks, (who near as we can tell were an offshoot of the Philistines mentioned inthe bible)

SO basically Miller completely farks up the story and lesson of The real 300. There are two incredible themes in the true history of the Stand at Thermopolaye that needed no embellishment. 1) that 300 men stood against 10,000 and essentially prevailed though they were slaughtered to the last man. 2) that we owe the Surivival of Western Culture, and all its attendant gifts of Democracy, Science, Philosophy etc to a heroic stand and sacrifice by a group of men who not only did not share those values but in fact despised them.

Everyone, repeat after me:

It. Is. A. Movie.

actually right now it looks like soft-core Gay Porn with a CGI budget but that's just me

I dislike movies AND graphic novels that pretend (or, can't add) that the other (about) 4,900 soldiers weren't even there.

Yes, yes, I know that 300 vs 2.6 million seems to be a cooler story than 5200 vs 2.6 million, but why stop there? The Mycenaeans only had 80 soldiers at that battle! Surely 80 vs 2.6 million is at least 3 times as cool!

If you're going for the real drama, the Opuntian Locrians had their entire standing army there!

Arbitrator: In fact, what I find more irritating is that people will gripe about stuff like this but make no noises when movies have:
-cars that explode after falling off cliffs

But, I complain about non-historical-accuracy and all those other things. Also, I dislike movies that:

-have space ships that make sound (every movie that has a space ship, excepting the whole 2001:ASO series)
-have laser-like weapons that have a limited range (I'm looking at you, Lucas)
-use nuclear weapons to destroy targets that are just way too big to be really that affected (anything where an asteroid/comet/meteor is heading towards the Earth)
-show explosions in space as a ring instead of a sphere (only ok if you're exploding an Oreo from the inside)
-have big, red self-destruct buttons without any protective covering
-have big, red self-destruct buttons that don't have extremely clear labels
-show all computer interfaces as an immersive 3D environment

There are a lot more, but I won't continue. I should probably get back to work.

Firefly/Serenity. No sound in exterior space shots.
