mooseyfate: Trying to make a point based on the androgyny of rock stars is just...well...It doesn't make much sense. Especially during that era, when it was manly to be feminine.

I don't think you understood my point -- Sorry if I made it poorly (although I don't think I did).

I was saying that it was hypocritical for folks to rag on Prince for his androgyny when they are fine with Bowie doing it, or David Lee Roth, or Alice Cooper, or the guy from the Killers, for that matter. There is a long history of it going back to Elvis and Little Richard.

MichaelMoron: You sound like the bigot to me. nice hate speech there.

Shiate is shiate.

It ain't "hate" to correctly identify it.

That said, Prince may not be an innovator, nor a great Artist, nor the best guitar player in the world.

THAT SAID: He plays with feeling, perfectly within the style that he is in, and will get asses out of their seats and on their feets. He gets good tone. He's plays one of the most understated Custom Teles on the planet. I gots the hots for that axe, man.

What on Earth is wrong with any of that? Do people just have to find things to complain about?

(Like Shadow Puppet Dragon Peenii?)

No doubt. Prince did the song proud.

Best part of the game.

Ahh, gotcha. And just so it's known, I don't not like Prince because I think he looks like a drag queen. I don't like him because I just can't get into his music. Of course, it's been a hell of a long time since I listened to his music, so maybe I should give it another try sometime.

Yeah. a custom shop tele? heck yeah. And a matching strat, too please with fat headstock, rosewood board and silkscreen logo that says "Poone's Fender". Might as well throw in a Dumble while you're at it.

Yeah, but being on Fark.com only goes so far in the "blatant douchebaggery" department. One and a half paragraphs explaining why I think Prince is a decent but not spectacular guitar player, and the only thing people read was one word. "Hammett". Like I said, I'm over it. I'm really not going to lose sleep over it. On a more related note, I was hoping to come into fark today to find a "Prince's Penis" photoshop contest. I was sorely disappointed (no pun intended).

If you're gonna throw rocks at their guy, then they get to throw rocks at yours! Fair is fair!

OverMuch: Hammett is nowhere near a "great."

Eh, I'm gonna have to disagree with that one.
Hammett is, imho, a brilliant guitarist. He masterfully uses tone and timing to extract real emotion from even the heaviest metal grinds, like a surgical instrument among sledgehammers. The solo in Unforgiven gives me goosebumps every time, ditto for the intro to "Blackened", and too many other songs to mention. And apparently Santana (certainly one of the greats) thinks enough of him to do a song with him on his last album alongside Robert Randolph (God of pedal-steel) as well.

As for Prince, well... I'm not really a fan, I had a love/hate relationship with his performance. He plays a really wicked guitar, but I don't think that his rather effeminate voice fits his own music very well.

2007-02-05 04:36:57 PM
danlpoon: Let's face it. Prince is no Ratt or Poison.

And I, for one, couldn't be more grateful.

/Isn't one of the guys from Ratt a professional house painter now? Arguably more lucrative and a better use of his "talent."

I'd take either one. You can do the pre-CBS mod (silverface mod) but who cares, right? I bet they both sound pretty great. I never even heard a dumble. I just know they expensive. I traded a soldano bass cabinet for an ounce of weed once. bad trade.

and the only thing people read was one word. "Hammett".

I've learned to only post key words to provoke the lazy reader. blah, blah, blah, BUSH!, blah, blah, Kelo!, blah, blah BLAH!.

2007-02-05 04:40:05 PM
Triaxis: Because as guitar players go, he's just so-so. Nothing special in the way of chops or style. He's more known for his dancing and singing, no one in any guitar circles is waiting around for the next Prince release so they can cop some chops from the guy.

I don't know - I've been a guitarist for 20+ years now and I can't think of the last time I eagerly anticipated a record release to "cop some chops."

/Chops come from practice, not listening to records.
//Not that there's anything wrong with either,

My new DR is the reissue -- so the mod is already there! The PreCBS one, the real '65 (Fender ELECTRIC Instruments on the panel) never gets played because the tubes are all original and I am a douche.

My soldano is the slo100, I have just the head -- I play it through an old marshall cabinet. I still haven't heard a soldano cab although I bet they are great. But my marshall looks like Keith Moon ran over it with his rolls, and that makes me cooler than you.

The SLO100, for the record, has the most incredible drive I have ever heard. When I play it I think I am in Thin Lizzy, when in fact I am a suburban dorkdad.

I never heard a dumble either. I bet we'd both wonder what all the fuss was if we did.

/gearqweer, yes I know.

/you must be one those "I know everything about music, and my knowledge is ABSOLUTE!" kinda guys, but I hope you aren't

Never said I hated him, and don't deny that he's a great player. But Hendrix and SRV are in a rare class, and I'm sorry but Hammett's wah-soaked solos don't really stand up.

I've got an opinion after picking up my 1st guitar 20 plus years ago and seeing and hearing some spectacular musicians. I actually enjoyed Metallica's old stuff but unfortunately his stuff doesn't measure up to Jimi, SRV, etc.

2007-02-05 04:45:18 PM
stonent: I wondered about the electrocution thing also, but then realized he was on a wireless guitar and wireless mike, so at best he'd get less than 12 volts which is pretty safe. The amps and other high voltage equipment could be stored in a rain protected environment along with wires ran through conduit.

That's one of the best reasons for a guitarist or singer (or both) to go wireless. NEVER trust the house wiring.

12V will tickle - 48V phantom power coming from a mike will hurt. Greater than that, you can end up dead. I have yet to ever play a gig or a venue worth dying for.

If saying that Prince is good, but not on par with Hendrix, Vaughn, or Hammett is throwing rocks, then label me a stone thrower. Atleast Gawdzila is here to take the heat now, I guess. Honestly, I'm through with it. I made my point, it's there if you want to read it, but I'm really not going to waste anymore time on this subject.

mooseyfate: Yeah, because you're the guy that wrote and performed all of Kirk Hammett's solos, ever. Just a bit of advice, just because Metallica sucks now, doesn't mean that they never performed some of the most blistering guitar riffs ever written.

Too bad Hetfield wrote the majority of them. Sorry. :(

/Hammett doesn't do anything other than play fast. All that is is practice and rote repetition. He's no better than a million bar hacks you can see at a million bars on any given Friday night.

More_Like_A_Stain: if you were riding around in the Camaro with your buddies, Sabbath, Zep, and Maiden was cool. But if you wanted to throw a party with, you know, chicks, Prince was a sure bet.

True dat. Iron Maiden while cool didn't really put chicks in a "party mood". Most H.S. girls back then would rather listen to "Little Red Corvette" than "The Prisoner".

Just so this never gets brought up again, and I no longer have to listen to another post directed at me that involves the names Kirk, or Hammett, I'll fix my own post...

He's not listed as one of the greatest guitar players ever for a very simple reason. He's not one of the greatest guitar players ever.

Sure, he can play a decent guitar, but so can a million and a half other people in America, and hundred of millions worldwide. I'm not trying to take away from his musical talents, because even as a person that doesn't like Prince, I can clearly see he's talented. But it's just downright blasphemy to hold him up to the likes of Hendrix, Vaughn, or Hammett Sqwisgaar. One of the most talented musicians ever, certainly, but far from the greatest guitar player.

Man, anything with 12AX7's in the preamp, and a pair of 6L6's in a push-pull on the poweramp side, will do fine for me. I love the way 4 6L6's sound, but my back hates the idea of carrying a full blown Twin around. So yeah, give me a Deluxe Reverb any day.

I really hate the way EL34's sound, all buzzy and nasally, 6L6's are bright, liquid, clean, and fast to my ears. I can fuzz it up on the floor, before the amp just fine, and I need the two channels these days because I'm playing a Parker now, and have the acoustic and electric outputs.

He's gotten better about it, but it used to be that Hammett wasn't usually in the same key as the rest of the band during his solos. It set my teeth on edge when he came in.

And yeah, he doesn't even deserve to be next to Hendrix and Stevie Ray. That's...I don't even know what to call that. Horrifying. Terrible.

I wish I could have kept mine. These days, I do it the easy way; I'm a keyboard player that plays 2nd guitar as needed, so I drag a Tech 21 Trademark 60 to gigs. No miking hassles, does the "clean Fender" and "dirty Fender" exceptionally well, in addition to a VERY nice Marshall. The 35 pound weight is what seals the deal.

I've had EL84\EL34 tube amps in the past and I agree with your assessment. They sound amazing dimed, but yeah, I can't say I'm a fan of Class A clean.

danlpoon: The point is that when a seventeen year old, steeped in the Led Zep, Maiden, Van Halen tradition, sees a little greasy dude slithering sexy out of a bath of rose pedals singing about mournful crying doves it comes across a little more gay than what they're used to.

Two things. 1) Led Zep was also considered gayer than gay by many back when they came out. If people can handle Robert Plant, they can handle Prince. 2) Anyone who listens to Prince and can appreciate music knows he kicks more ass (and rocks harder) than many heavy metal acts could ever hope to.

Are you referring to the studio mixes which were so lovingly retouched over and over again. Or to the mish mash shiat he was putting out on stage during the live performances.

LIsten.. the guy can swing an axe, but he is most definately not nearly on the same level of axe grinding maddness that is the like of the guitar greats. Hell like mentioned before.. he's not even in the same farking key half the time they played live.

A sober Hammett couldn't lick the boots of Vaughan, even if Stevie had just downed a fifth of jack and a bottle of ludes.

I've seen Prince play live numerous times in a small setting and yes, he's still making his guitar sing with his left hand and effects. The gigs he's doing in Vegas are amazing in the small, intimate setting of his nightclub. Then, there are the aftershows in his restaurant where he might end up playing his guitar right in front of your face. THEN you'll understand what an amazing performer this man is!
