3121 was #1 on the R&B charts, and the Billboard 200
Musicology was #3 on the Billboard 200
Rave Un2 was #18 on the Billboard 200

How are them charts for ya?

In 2004, he raked in over 50 mil for the Musicology tour.

So he's artisically and financially sucessful, musically brilliant, and brings the funk harder than anyone alive (R.I.P. James) and you STILL think he's a has-been?

I'm sure the next utterly forgetable Hinder/Fall Out Boy/Modest Mouse/Justin Timberlake album will be along shortly to heal your pain.

To be fair, Prince inflates his album sales by forcing a copy for each tour ticket sold. So, that automatically increases his album sales on the charts (probably almost doubling them, considering those going to the tour are more than likely to have already bought the album), and inflating his tour gross based on the included price of the album.

But, I do agree that he's a musical genius who is definitely still relevant on the music scene.

Oh, and I don't really take kindly to the Justin Timberlake bashing. He's pretty widely considered to be the next MJ on the pop scene (which, despite the negative connotations MJ receives at this point, is definitely a huge compliment in regards to his performing).

danlpoon: In my day you listened to the Black Sabbath, the Sex Pistols and WASP. When little boy-men put on Purple Velvet coats and road their way-too-big Hondas around in crappy movies we figured they were just queer.

WASP? You know Blackie Lawless was in the NY Dolls for about 5 minutes, right? And dressed in pseudo-drag? Blackie's not exactly the Marlboro Man when it comes to image either.

If you watch the beginning of the show, you can see that that is how Prince always plays the guitar, with the guitar in between his legs, so it wasn't something he was doing especially for the shadow effect.

Tech-Geek: When I watched the halftime show it was great. He so badly mimed playing the guitar it was funny. Though I do think with his last set and the price guitar (the Price-tar) he was actually playing due to the fact when he picked it up and set it down I heard a little guitar being touched when amped hum on the tv

Ok. For everybody from here on out in the thread:

Prince was playing the guitar "live"

absolutely, without question. The guitar is making noises when being played, and not being played, that tell me this. How do I know that fact? Thirty years of playing the guitar(p), and sound engineering. When it doesn't look like he's doing anything with his right hand, he is doing things with his left, and that makes the guitar sound on it's own. You can do it with an acoustic, but with an electric, where you have hot pickups, and a pre-amp that has a lot of gain (giving you distortion and sustain), it's a lot easier. Prince is wearing ear monitors, I'm sure, and can hear his guitar like he's sitting next to his amp. It's easy to do this sort of thing, he does it on tour all the time.

Also when watching the video, he's perfectly in sync with what he's playing. So I don't get what the problem is.

/show rocked by the way, and I'm not that big a fan.

Kim Jong B Illin:A Superbowl halftime show featuring GWAR would totally kick ass. The silhouette of Oderus's giant tool would really bring down the house.

I would pay to see that. Fake blood, puss, and jizz being sprayed all over the executives on the 50 yard line would make for an awesome show.

On another note, did anyone else notice how crappy the actual broadcast was? CBS sucks when it comes to big productions. The first screw up I noticed was when sound cut out for Brian Urlacher's entire interview right after the Bears came out onto the field. The only thing you heard after 30 seconds of lips moving was at the very end when he said "thanks." They must have had some old coot that can't program his own alarm clock running the sound board.

You are right.

I'm no sound technician, but I was impressed with how well engineered the sound was, to roll it all out there in about 20 minutes and get it all set up, not one miss on the instruments. They switched all the amp effects at the right times in the songs too. Not like he had pedals out there. (I'm easily impressed when pros make it go right, seems like I usually see it go wrong.)

Anything you want musically, the man can give it to you. I'm not into rock 'n' roll, but I always wonder why he isn;t mentioned with the greatest guitar players of all time?

I saw prince on his rainbow children tour back in 01. The album was a load of pretentious twaddle, but it was very, very jazz influenced. On the tour he played three hours of largely instrumental jazz, which was exactly what I always wanted to see: Prince just rocking the guitar nonstop. And it was infarkingcredible.

He is an amazing guitarist; very underrated. But imho that isn't even his strongest suit. He is one of the most prolific and gifted songwriters working today. Just take a look at his discography.

As for the people saying Prince is a has been, you may want to crawl out from under your rock to notice that his last release in 2006 was the first in his career to have a Billboard debut at #1.

I saw Prince in concert 2 years ago, and for the encore he played Purple Rain. The most spectacular thing I have ever seen and I'm not even a huge Prince fan. The owned that song, and took out his Prince symbol guitar, and played and sang that song like he just wrote it the day before even though he's been singing it for 20 years now... there was so much love and emotion in that song I get douchechills whenever I mention it.

He is an amazing performer and showman, the concert was amazing even though I only knew the songs from Purple Rain soundtrack.

I think this was all about Musicology, and there was some controversy at the time about the practice. Yes, the cds did count as sales, the cost was folded into concert ticket sales, and they were trying to decide whether such a practice should be included when determining sales.

The Purple Rain Tour was the first concert I ever went to, Sheila E opened.

I made out with one of the girls I went to the show with. I'd have to say that was a good night.

How is it that nobody got electrocuted during the halftime show?

Electronics have come a long way since the 60's. They are now so well shielded that you could submerge some items and still get them to play. A quick call to your local concert/theatre electronic supply store would show you that they do have "Rain safe" electronics out there. They are a bit more expensive, but they're out there.

And let me jump on the "Prince is farking awesome" bandwagon. Yeah, he's eccentric (I've seen the Kevin Smith DVD where he talks about spending a week at Paisley Park shooting a documentary that nobody is ever going to see, plus my girlfriend works for Cirque, was a part of the costuming crew and got to deal with His Purple Majesty directly a couple times) but that doesn't take away from the fact that the man has more talent in his farts than most of us will ever eke out in a lifetime. Last night I was reminded of that fact, and am now wanting to pick up some of his stuff again. I would rather hear 20 year old prince albums than anything 'new' from Nickleback, Chevelle, Kid Rock, whatever bland "radio safe" corperate crank-out band is popular at the moment. 10 years from now, people won't remember Nickleback. 10 years from now, Prince will still be a legend.

Oh yes, and when Prince did the "Silhouwang," my entire apartment DIED laughing at the awesomeness.

perfect pour

Didn't Carmen Electra out Prince as shiat in bed and lacking inchage? I say give him his giant shadow phallus and incredible height!

I don't know if that's a joke or not, but Prince is not incredibly tall. He is, in fact, pretty short. Story time!

When I was seventeen and a senior in high school, I was pretty into Spanish. I was a member of the Spanish club (muy geeky!) and I went to Spain for two weeks on a kind of abbreviated student exchange thing. So when we arrived in Madrid, there was this huge crowd around what to my tired mind appeared only to be a black man dressed in purple, which is when my teacher squealed and ran over to the mob. After putting the purple clothes together with my knowledge of her love of Prince, I figured it out. Long story short, the guy's probably 5'7" or so.

/didn't get an autograph

I knew a guy in college who insisted that Prince couldn't play a note of music and that he was all flash. Swore up and down. Of course, he is not a musician, and anyway he is a farking idiot.

Now I am seeing the same thing here. WTF, people? I have never seen this being said about any other guitarist.

It's just idiocy, so just ignore it. Prince can play the guitar better than most guitarists today. To say otherwise is simply idiotic. You can't pay attention to what every single person says, you need to be able to realize when people are just spouting bullshiat.

Can you imagine what the meeting between Prince and the Producers for this thing must have been like? No one alive could out-status this guy.

PROD: "So, we'd like you to play the halftime show"

Prince: Stares silently.

PROD:"We'd like you to play a medly of your biggest hits, and something patriotic, and maybe a duet with Lindsay Lohan"

Prince: Stares silently.

PROD: (His shirt now soaked with sweat) "Umm, or, you could just do the medly and the Lohan thing, no worries about the patriotic stuff..."

Prince: Stares silently

PROD: "Ok, maybe just a medly of your biggest songs..."

Prince: Stares silently

PROD: "You know, just tell us how long you need, and play whatever you like, k?"

Prince: Gets up, nods, leaves.

So the parts where he was holding up his right hand and the song kept going weren't fake?

No offense, but you obviously have never picked up a guitar in your life.

Short answer: no. There is a technique of playing called "hammer on" where you basically strike the strings percussively with your left hand to get a sound. You can augment with your right, or not, depending on the sound you are going for.

Metal guitarists do this all the time.

No, dummy, it was not faked. You don't need to strum the strings to produce a sound from an electric guitar, especially if you are playing individual notes. It's more done for showboating purposes.

I wondered about the electrocution thing also, but then realized he was on a wireless guitar and wireless mike, so at best he'd get less than 12 volts which is pretty safe. The amps and other high voltage equipment could be stored in a rain protected environment along with wires ran through conduit.

My girlfriend saw the guitar thing and immediately commented on what it looked like. I said "Yeah... I guess.."
