That's awesome. Guy sounds like a self-made man anyway, and pretty cool. I mean:

Bromiley started his business with money he made by selling nine of 10 puppies his Great Dane, Lady Trixie Bell, gave birth to in 1968. The company makes products for aerospace, medical, military, electric power and telecommunications industries.

WTF? Dogs to industry supplies?

That's a horrible thing to say! Maybe PDiddy would be fun to hang out with (he was pretty cool in Made), but I wouldn't wish hanging out with Paris on my worst enemy

My wife, who is not a gambler, threw $20 into a nickel slot machine a few weeks ago.

Without realizing it, she went ahead and hit maximum, and after two pulls, managed to win about $300.

After that, we realized that maximum was about $6 a pull.

Got up, cashed in and went home.

Reminds me of how I won a few bills one night, completely hammered at the Baccarat table.

I still have no idea what Baccarat is.

these people are why casinos are around. dumbasses who don't know what the hell they're doing and are going to casinos.

that being said, good for him. he seems like a good guy who's worked hard all his life and deserves it, and isn't gonna waste it on hookers and blow (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Nickel slots with multiple pay lines are my favorites when maxed out. I always come out ahead when I play them.

Radioactive Ass: We thought the same thing might be true. On Sunday we were driving by the casino again and decided to go in an throw $40 in (~7 pulls). Lost it all right away... not a single winning pull. So, we went over to the blackjack table, found a great dealer who basically played for us (told us what to do) and walked out even.

Wow, I'm pretty sure that guy's son is a volunteer fireman at the same station as me (There's a few people in the area around here named Bromiley and I'm not sure of all the relations)...

If he is that dude's son, then luck must run in the family 'cause every time he goes to Atlantic City or Las Vegas or where ever he goes, he comes home a few grand richer than when he left...

Hope they don't send him to Iraq ;)

Glad this guy won, though. Aside from playing the machine differently than he thought he was (or at all..not quite clear on that point), he sounds like he's got his faculties, built himself up.

of course, he made his career on the back of dog slavery... :D

Reading comprehension smitty?

Dude was not senile, he simply thought the machine had frozen when it was racking up his winnings.

Also, he was there with his fiance! 71 and getting married? Senile: NO. Awesome: Hell Yes!

That's a lot of hookers and blow.

Anyway..

"Bromiley has the option of receiving a yearly payment for the next 20 years or getting a lump sum. He was leaning toward the annual payment."

Always wondered about annual payments and lump sums.

With the annual payment over 20 years, say if you die after a few years, does the remaining year's worth of loot get handed over to another person? Like an inheritance type situation. Or is that it? Tough cookie, you spun the wheel twice but lost out this time, old fella?

Just wondering. Any big time winners out there?

The only time I won anything of substance at a casino was $225.00 playing 25-cent slots in an Indian-run joint in N. Michigan. When I went to cash out, the cashier gave me a weird look like either (a) she couldn't believe someone was actually leaving with money or (b) I had just handed her a blanket full of smallpox instead of a cup of quarters.

/good for this guy, though

It continues to be paid to next of kin or whoever is specified in a will.

I believe I heard once recently that lottery winnings are not able to be transferred in a will. Maybe that's different though. And maybe, I am wrong.

/I am usually wrong, just to be perfectly clear.

Bromiley was in Nevada with his fiancee over the weekend for a convention held by the Safari Club International. An avid hunter, Bromiley has attended the convention in Reno for the past 23 years.

Does anyone else suddenly feel less safe?

NEVER take the annual payments. They pay it out over 20 years, and THEY keep the interest it makes during those 20 years.

It might take you 20 years (depending upon how you invest it) to come out ahead by taking the (usually lesser) lump sum... but you will come out ahead by taking the lump sum now.

2007-01-31 02:30:49 PM
"To be honest with you, I had no I idea how I was even playing the game"

However unwitting, this is an amazing commentary / philosophic observation on life and how so many people actually play out their existence in all manner of ways.

These would be immortal last words, right up there with Robert E. Lee ("Strike the tent") and a personal favorite, Oscar Wilde ("Either that wallpaper goes, or I do.")

Amazing...and farking funny. ;-)

My gf and I went to the Argosy once, our first time gambling, and she picked up $85 on a 25¢ slot with one quarter. She then went to another machine with the receipt (no cups of quarters there) and proceeded to lose the whole thing by pressing the max button each time. It was like watching money go down the crapper. The multi-lines give you more wins, but the return rarely covers the investment.

I would never take the lump sum of a big win. I would certainly lose all the money on some bad advice or investment. An annual payment would give me a chance to learn from my mistakes.

2007-01-31 02:44:01 PM
the lump payment is alot less then the amount you would get over 20 years most of the time

if you wont 100,000 over 20 years, it might be 5000 a year for 20 years but the lump sum would be somewhere around 30,000

2007-01-31 02:56:22 PM
I once walked up drunk to a roulette table, randomly decided to put all my chips on a single number and it came up. Won a fortune. Unfortunately it was just at a party and wasn't for real - although I did get a bottle of whiskey out of it. I'm kind of afraid I've used up all my gambling luck though.

2007-01-31 03:02:44 PM
Anyone ever notice that the annual payment options are almost always 20 years?

So if the casino puts the $7m in a fund that averages 5% the interest would pay the guy off and they aren't out a dime.

2007-01-31 03:05:02 PM

don't forget about the net present value of money. that last 5000 you get in your last of 20 years is worth less than 2000 in today's monies.

2007-01-31 03:11:48 PM
Senile, eh? Did he think was President during the 80s?

2007-01-31 03:15:42 PM
hockey god

actually, the annual payment gives you interest (of course, its a low rate usually in tune with inflation).. thats why its always more over the 20 years. The lump sum is much less, but you can easily make it back with a simple investment strategy.

This happened to my 90-year-old grandmother, albeit on a smaller scale. She's in a nursing home with severe Alzheimer's, among other things. The home took a field trip to a local casino, where she won $120 on a slot machine.

When my grandmother got back, she had no idea that she'd won a significant amount of money or how she'd done it. Fortunately, the (trustworthy) activities director took it for deposit in Grandma's bank account and then called my mom to let her know.

That's exactly how I won $500 on a slots game based on unicorns. I have no idea what happened, but all of a sudden there were tons of unicorns on the screen. Plus, it was my boyfriend's money to start with. Basically, he gave me $40 so I'd shut up and leave him alone to play Blackjack. I guess it worked!

/I didn't give him his $40 back.

2007-01-31 06:19:16 PM
Damn, I played that machine on the Vegas strip less than two weeks ago. They are all connected and the jackpot is based on play from all of the machines. I must had seen that game in a half dozen casinos on the Vegas strip on my trip with the jackpot at 7.7 mil.

I would want to be paid over 20 years. Therefore, I would not be spending all the money up front.
