The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed in the 1990s that Saddam Hussein had an advanced nuclear weapons development program, had a design for a nuclear weapon and was working on five different methods of enriching uranium for a bomb. The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa. Our intelligence sources tell us that he has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production. Saddam Hussein has not credibly explained these activities. He clearly has much to hide.

Relax until Iran and Syria counterattack Israel. Are you people insane? Do you think Iran will simply sit back while thousands of its soldiers are killed by an aggressive enemy attack? Fools!

From what I keep hearing, Iran would need 150,000+ centrifuges to even begin thinking about trying to produce enough enriched uranium to make warheads out of them.

3,000 is well short of 150,000, last I knew.

What about the fact that Iran, has, admittedly nuclear reactors? The question is whether they're using them inappropriately.

Three Mile Island aside, how does one inappropriately use a nuclear reactor?

Wow, a ratio! I've never understood the concept. I never would've guess that soldiers face higher mortality rates than the average citizen! I also assume all soldiers are too stupid to realize that they are entering into a profession which may involve mortal combat!

The problem here is with raw numbers. The death toll for a war is actually very low, especially since it is primarily a ground war, in occupied space, against combatants that are not easily identified.

It's tragic that people die, but it's not altogether unexpected for combat soldiers to face mortal danger. When there's a draft, call me about the unfair nature of enlistment. If you were trying to milk the army for a free education and sit around playing jezzball on the force laptop, I guess you guessed wrong.

Yeah right. They got their asses kicked by little Hezbollah... against a whole other country they'd simply be wiped out. And while Syria doesn't have nukes, they have extremely pleasant chem and biological weapons that they would use in response to Israel using nukes on Iran. So sacrifice Israel if you think it's worth it.

It isn't paranoia when the threat is real. Achmadinejad has made it abundantly clear that he intends to target Israel and the West. If some guy is screaming, "I'm going to kill you as soon as I assemble this gun!" you don't wait around to find out if he means it.

'Babooshka
why the fark does America get to have nukes and no one else?'

Not everyone has mastered the concept of good will toward all men. It's a special thing with western reared people. It's not all that well known a concept in other regions. Lacking that philosophical underpinning, a state, government, region could deal a lot of damage with an arsenal of nukes. Especially a systemically insecure and seemingly unhappy one like your typical, run of the mill Islamic outfit. One that didn't give half a rat's ass about good will and all that other Christian belief system claptrap. And get this, these outfits haven't even fought their way into an enlightenment and still think irrational shiat is ok and justifiable. That's what the dark ages were for the west, a rejection of rational thought in favor of criminal enforcement of religious edict. Sound familiar? You don't want a load gun in these hands.

No Such Agency: Yes, I'm sure Iran is interested in bombing Europe and not, say, having a strategic deterrent against Israel.

I'm sure once we ramp up tensions enough we'll gladly hand over the THAAD technology (if it works)and sell them lots and lots of other arms.

Comrade438:

Not as if they've signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty or anything.

Two of their neighbors have been invaded by the worlds largest superpower since they signed that treaty. They would be derelict in not pursuing all available options for self-defense.

Nor that preventing them from acquiring nuclear weapons is in the vested interest of the United States.

Pakistan's got 'em. North Korea's got 'em. Why not Iran?

I guess we ought to go ahead and let anyone acquire them.

See above comment RE Pakistan and North Korea.

In fact, lets assist them in doing so!

If you think about that for a minute, it just might make some sense.

If you really believe that he's interested in actually using those weapons, you're crazier than he is. All any highly placed official wants to do is maintain their power. Attacking Israel would remove him from power. Ergo....

Comrade438,

Uhh, I don't know. Not as if they've signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty or anything. Nor that preventing them from acquiring nuclear weapons is in the vested interest of the United States.

Enrichment is required for the production of nuclear energy.

If you want to suggest that we should be worried about preventing countries from developing cheap, efficient, clean sources of energy, then I have to heartily disagree.

Enrichment does not equate to building nuclear weapons.

With massive nuclear proliferation, only peace can follow!

Well, it worked during the Cold War.

Ah, Israel can do some damage, and they do have 300+ nuke warheads.

The problem with Israel lately, is they are hobbled politically by, well, the whole world trashing them constantly, and condemning them for 'defending' themselves.

Israel's in a pickle, and fairly soon here, it'll be up to the international community to decide if it should continue to exist.
