Sorry, dude.

Yeah, but halfway through "Hot for Teacher" Roth will start singing songs no one understands and then he'll stop the song completely and start talking to one of the stage hands for 25 minutes.

Van Halen sucked.

All this "Roth vs. Hagar" shiat is missing the point. They were both horrible!

Roth was a prancing, spandex-wearing, egotistical, arrogant, feather boa-wearing, self-masturbatory douchebag.

Hagar was a fast-driving, coke-snorting, sexist, UGLY Eighties hair-metal motherfarker.

The guy from Extreme I won't bother with, because nobody gave a shiat about him anyway.

The cover of Balance was borderline kiddie porn.

The ONLY good thing about Van Halen was Eddie, and he wasted his incredible talent by playing in such a shiatty band.

Also, Randy Rhoads was an even better guitarist than Eddie, but unfortunately Rhoads had to get killed in a plane crash while Eddie got to keep lending his talent to such a shiatty band. And there is no justice in the world.

I liked the headline. Different for Fark.

Anyway - I have been playing guitar for 20 years or so and grew up thinking Eddie Van Halen was awesome.

My opinion now - still an awesome player, but an all-around dickface

Eddie Van Halen actually cured cancer according to him, during an interview with Howard Stern last year.

it will be cancelled after the 3rd show. Over/under?

2007-01-25 08:23:47 AM
Wow, I guessed wrong. I would care if this was 15 years ago, but at this point I don't need to watch another washed up rehash of a band digging for just a little more gold.

Mike Anthony is the one who's getting the shaft this time. He'd been in the band for over 20 years and got dumped because of nepotism.

2007-01-25 08:28:14 AM
You know what would be really cool? If on Van Halen's new tour they opened it at a convent and started out by drowning Paris Hilton in a barrel of oil.

That would be so cool it would probably cure cancer.

2007-01-25 08:28:21 AM
Onkel Buck: it will be cancelled after the 3rd show. Over/under?

Hm. Tricky. I'm gonna go with "over".

2007-01-25 08:30:17 AM
all of the "talent" is back --- roth being the origianl voice and you can't really replace the VH brothers at their respective instruments --- anyone could play bass for this band --- he was no entwhistle or claypool ---but i wonder what haoppened to make M. anthony quit?

/don't see this tour lasting long

Here's an article with Eddie's quotes of how he cured cancer. He's not real clear how he did it, but other articles say he was implying he did it by smoking crystal meth.

Paris joined VH after she cured Prancer. Still no hope for oil.

2007-01-25 08:32:50 AM
FlyingPig: Eddie got to keep lending his talent to such a shiatty band.

What you talking about? The Van Halens are the shiatty band. If anyone is to blame for the quality of the band, I'd point my finger at Eddie.

Coming around "state fair" time, I'd wager.

That "fire in the hole" guy, ruined it for me. Eddie is cool to watch, though

In 2005 I went to see Van Halen in Jax,FL. When Hagar started his solo everyone ran for a beer and a bathroom break. Didn't come back till he was finished.

I was kinda hoping for the convent thing, so I'd never have to hear about Paris Hilton again.

Instead, I get Ghey Dave rejoining a meth addict band.

I was 10 years old when I saw my first real concert, Van Halen at Brendan Byrne Arena (the meadowlands). A few years back when they were supposedly going to tour with Roth I was psyched as I never really got into Van Hagar. But we all know how that clusterfark went down.

This time around I accept two things: 1) they're not touring until they're on the road and make it through at least half the shows and 2) with only 40 amphitheater shows on the schedule the tickets will be crazy expensive. Personally I don't think they'll even come close to making it through a full 40 shows until they have another falling out.

I think the fact that Wolfgang is going to be playing with them is the coolest farking part of the whole deal.

Anyone thinking that this is good news either (a) is brain-damaged from all the drugs they did in the 80's or (b) has not seen David Lee Roth in concert.

Dave sucks in concert. His voice is completely shot.

As for Gary Cherone's time with the band.... while VH3 wasn't a great CD by any stretch of the imagination, the tour was. VH fans owe him a debt of gratitude for finally getting Eddie to play the farking guitar again. You can tell that there were points where during the recording of that album he said "hey Eddie, here's how Nuno (the guitarist from Gary's previous band Extreme) would have played it." There's a lot of Nuno Bettencort riffs on that album.

The album itself would have been better if they had taken the time to write a new album that worked with Cherone's vocal style instead of just having him record the one they had written for Sammy Hagar.

I dunno. Eddie was a wetbrained mess on the 2004 tour. I keep picturing him staggering around and missing half the licks to his own songs.
And now he's going to replace the two band members who were sober and performing well with David Lee Roth and a fourteen-year-old kid...
This will be an arena tour of Titanic proportions.

I've seen all 4 versions: W/DLR, W/Hagar, W/Cherone, and W/Hagar again. Honestly - at least live, Gary Cherone was the best singer as far as vocal talent. That show was July 4th at the Blockbuster Pavillion outside of L.A. It was seriously one of the best concerts I'd been to see.

The last time I saw them was 2 years ago at the X in St. Paul. EVH was shiatfaced. He brought Wolfgang out to do his 316 'solo' with him, and halfway through, started kissing him to the point where it was hard to look at the IMAG of the show because I was so embarassed for that poor kid. Nothing like a loaded dad going all "I love you, man!" on his son in front of 20,000 people.

I don't know how they're going to replace "the Ringo Starr of the bass guitar" Michael Anthony's backing vocals. That's a huge part of the Van Halen sound, believe it or not.

Listening to bootlegs of classic-era Van Halen concerts is mind-boggling. The charisma and energy just explodes in your face. It's amazing some of those buildings didn't spontaneously disintegrate during those shows.

2007-01-25 09:16:25 AM
I also predict that after the tour concludes, 80% of the user base of harmony central will commit suicide, as their reason for living will no longer exist

2007-01-25 09:24:51 AM
I've been a VH fan for years. I saw them with Roth on the 1984 tour, and several times with Hagar. Hagar isn't the world's best singer, but he sure did put on a better show than Roth. Roth is all dick jokes and Jack Daniels. At least Hagar wrote better tunes.

Yes, I prefer Van Hagar, as people so eloquently call the 2nd incarnation of the band.

As far as Wolfie, Van Halen's basslines, with just a couple of exceptions, are super simple. A kid who grew up with the songs getting private lessons from the lead guitar player is qualified to play them. Hardest basslines are Poundcake (just for the unrelenting tempo - no real hard licks, just fast and steady) and When It's Love (neat little triplet arrangement and odd chord choices). It's not Rush or Primus, folks. The kid can probably play pretty damn well. If his dad couldn't teach him, then he sure could find someone capable of doing so.

Here's something from Ross Halfin's diary entry of December 13th:

Edward is in a great mood, he's easy to work with. And I'm not saying who or what I shot, but I will tell you Edward played a couple of cds which I thought were from 1978 (it was from two days ago) of Van Halen rehearsing with Wolfgang Van Halen on bass. It was jaw-droppingly amazing. They played On Fire, I'm The One, Atomic Punk. I'm not listing the rest, but I will tell you the band sounded untouchable. On Jamie's Crying they did a long bass-lead jam on the intro - the band rocked. I don't like that word (too American) but the band rock - really rock. It was as exciting as the first time I saw them. They will come back and destroy the world. One of the tightest, freshest sounding groups ever. I want to go and play the first album as soon as I get home. Had a blast listening to them, it made me remember why I liked music in the first place. Having Edward's son on bass has rejuvenated them.

I saw Hagar in tour this past summer. Loved the show!

That said, I know why Mike Anthony was fired.

He was on Sammy's tour, performing with SAmmy as "The Other Half". Them and the Wabos doing a hell of a job on the Van Hagar music.

Mike's vocals mesh with Sammys perfectly. If you're a fan of Van Hagar, go see them in concert!

Hallelujah. This is what "Wolfie" has to worry about, not the playing. MA Seems like a standup guy, and Eddie's a walking bag of dicks. Roth sucks live, and nobody except drummers ever cared about Alex outside of "Hot for Teacher."

Saw MA and Hagar live last year, they put on a MUCH better show with the rest of Sammy's band than the last VH reunion. I won't pay for tickets to see =VH=. I'll pay for front row the next time Sammy comes around, and may very well head to Cabo next October for his 60th birthday.

Sammy's shows are an absolute blast.

Oh, and Cherone is a great singer, VH3 was just not a good album.

Pink Floyd, during Live 8 was still pretty damn awesome.

Rush still puts on an awesome show.

Yes also puts on an amazing show. I also saw Alan Parson Project open for Yes at the St. Michelle Winery here in Seattle about 5-6 years back...one of the cooler concerts I've ever been to (summer day on the grass drinking wine).

Oh...and I saw Van Halen during the Us Festival, and that was one of the funniest train wrecks I've ever seen.

Local radio station took a camera backstage right before they went on stage, showing the footage to the audience on the screen behind the stage.

They go into the back room, and DLR is bopping it with a few boobies live on camera. (Hooray for the 80's)

Shortly thereafter, they all come on stage totally drunk and wasted, and David promptly forgets ALL his lines in one of the worst rock performances of all time.

Us Festival WAS cool, even without Van Halen

anyone could play bass for this band

But not anyone could do the high harmonies that make you instantly go "hey, that's Van Halen." Even if somebody could, it's a matter of principle. When you're paying to see a "reunion tour", you want it to be an actual reunion of the original members.

but i wonder what haoppened to make M. anthony quit?

He didn't quit. He was fired by Eddie for touring with Sammy Hagar. Absolutely ricockulous. Either have a reunion tour or shut up and go away.

I agree this could very well go really bad and that Eddie has major problems now. But some(not all) of you are so damn Nickleback, Foo Fighter ghey'd out you don't know what guitar playing is anymore.

Sure some players can be better than Eddie. But ask any of those post-Eddie era players who their influence was. That's what counts. Chazz: Okay, lemme ask you a question: who's side did you take in the big David Lee Roth-Van Halen split?
Chris Moore: What?
Marcus: What kind of question is that?
Chazz: Who's side did you take: Halen or Roth?
Chris Moore: ...Van Halen
Ian: HE'S A COP!

All that matters, is that David Lee Roth has a hot half-spanish pornstar daughter.

No he doesn't, but I give her props for creative self-promotion.

I think I'll save my concert ticket money and go see Heaven And Hell, which is basically the Dio lineup of Black Sabbath.
I KNOW that will be good. Don't know about this, however.

nigelgandy:i saw VH live on their OU812 tour (I thought they'd release their next album called "I81B4U" but that never happened.

Actually, there was an I81B4U album released by the punk band Gang Green. They were a fun band, though incredibly sloppy. Other great Gang Green album titles include Older...Budweiser and Another Case of Brewtality, to give you some indication of their "inspiration."

VH had much better songs with DLR than with Sammy Hagar....it's a fact.

However, Sammy's solo work is pretty cool with me....."Mas Tequila" and "I Can't Drive 55" are on my iPod.

Plus, you have to love Cabo Wabo Tequila...the Anejo is awesome when you're pairing it with a nice cigar.

gizmanjr:In 2005 I went to see Van Halen in Jax,FL. When Hagar started his solo everyone ran for a beer and a bathroom break. Didn't come back till he was finished.

Sounds like when I saw them in 1984. Except the song was "I'll Wait" (one of Eddie's synth show-off songs).

/ Ozzy came to town 2 days later and smoked their asses

I liked these two quotes, in particular:

"...getting him and his former hair-band brothers back together would not be 'rocket surgery.'"
and
""And as far as hurt feelings and water under the dam..."

It doesn't get better, it doesn't get worse, but it sure gets different!
David Lee Roth

Music is like girlfriends to me; I'm continually astonished by the choices other people make.
David Lee Roth

I was trying to take the band in a direction that I thought was appropriate, and Roth was trying to take the band in more of a Las Vegas direction. And there he is.
Eddie Van Halen

It's always a Catch-22 situation. They hate you if you're the same, and they hate you if you're different.
Eddie Van Halen

Dave was great in Van Halen. No question about it. He was one of the best at being Mr. Rock Star. But it's sickening to see a guy still trying to be that with a wig on 20 years later.
Sammy Hagar

When they brought Roth back into the picture, obviously I didn't go along with that too well.
Sammy Hagar

Although I grew up listening to VH along with other tasteful talent such as WASP and Twisted Sister. You have to admit that the earlier VH was very good for its time and did inspire a few next gen guitarists. In any case that was then this is now. And as far as all that goes.....

Roth told the music magazine's Website eight months ago that getting him and his former hair-band brothers back together would not be "rocket surgery."

Rocket surgery?

I loved VH with DLR, & I loved them even more with Hagar. I loved Extreme but Gary didn't cut it with VH.

This is very happy news... Off to give the old discs a spin!

Wolfgamg has only been playing for 3 months. It's not as if he's been training for this his whole life.

it is absolutely asinine to even CONSIDER doing this withuot Michael Anthony. He was actually the original lead singer! His high harmonies are as essential to the "sound" of Van Halen as the tapping. Not only that, but he's the coolest guy ever that everybody loves. You'd have to be a complete dickface to have a problem with Michael Anthony *looking at you Ed and Al*

I used to think the problem with VH was Lead Singers Disease. Now I know it was Eddie all along.

I found an old interview from Diver Down where Eddie says he's been trying to get rid of Mike for a long time. it's bullshiat.

If there is a tour, MA will be on it.
The differences between Eddie & Mike will be worked out, either beginning at the HoF induction in a couple of months, or more likely prior to it, since they have to address the issue of letting MA jam with band.
The real interesting question will be if Dave can handle being on the same stage as Sammy, since both of them are being inducted. It's just as likely that they tour will no happen because Dave pulls some sort of "1996 Video Music Awards" crap again in the course of trying to show up Sammy.
It will be interesting, though, to say the least.

Agreed.

He was actually the original lead singer!

Nope. He was the lead singer in his previous band, but DLR joined the VH brothers slightly before MA did. Before Roth, Ed sang lead.

Well, it would appear there IS a tour, and MA hasn't been in the band for years now (not to mention Eddie is telling the media that Wolfie is the bassist), so I'm afraid you're wrong. If you have some info the rest of us don't have, please share.
