Hitler used to boast it would last 1000 generations or 400,000 miles, whichever came first.

Maybe after the auction they could have a race between this car and the Shelby Super Snake.

Ah bullshiat. Calling it "Hitler's car" is such crap, as if it sat in his driveway and he drove it himself. It's a 1930s Auto Union race car.

Well, I suppose it's Hitler's car in the same way Volkswagons are.

Nope...

a) You have to compare someone to Saddam or other mass murderer.

b) It would have to be in connection to an argument. Is it really possible to have an argument over an old car?

That's one hell of a historic auto. the price is quite justified.

But, yeah, like others have said: it wasn't his personal ride that he tooled around in to pick up groceries and art supplies.

Took some googling but found an article:

It looks like people had broken 300MPH by that point.

The 1939 car... It was found in a Russian factory in the 1970s, already disassembled for copying the technology.

Heh, sounds about right.

Godwin is only in play if a hitleresqué reference is used as an ad hominem attack on another poster.

If the conversation is legitimately about nazi germany, the thread can not be godwinned in any way.

the price is quite justified.

That's the combined annual salaries of nearly 400 average people in the US. Seems like rather a lot for a fairly nice car that simply got old and rare.

It is considered poor form to arbitrarily raise such a comparison with the motive of ending the thread. There is a widely recognized codicil that any such ulterior-motive invocation of Godwin's Law (in the above sense) will be unsuccessful. This is sometimes referred to as "Quirk's Exception". "RGB's Restriction of Quirk's Exception", also states: "In cases where the subject of the comparison to Hitler fails to recognize the applicability of Quirk's Exception, Quirk's Exception shall not apply and Godwin's Law shall take effect in its normal manner."

Godwin's Law does not apply to discussions directly addressing genocide, propaganda or other mainstays of the Nazi regime. Instead, it applies to inappropriate, inordinate, or hyperbolic comparisons of other situations to Hitler or Nazis.

/From Godwinslaw.org
// Should also be noted that the intentional invocation of godwins law is a reversal, and the person intentionally attempting to invoke the law rules loses the thread.

Mercedes and Auto Union racers of the 1930s were some of the most powerful, advanced machines of their time. Rear-engined Formula 1 cars did not make a return to racing for decades.

These cars dominated the Bugattis and Alfas - they were the best, and they were gorgeous.

http://www.tamsoldracecarsite.net/AutoUnion.html

The Hitler connection is massively secondary.

It'll likely end up in a museum and not a personal collection, as an important automotive engineering example. So, yeah, not a justifiable price to everyone, but hell, i just watched Antiques Roadshow last night. It's insane what people will pay for old stuff with history! I saw an old tea table get appraised at $70K!!

Yeah, but this is a true racer, not a land speed record car. Anyone can put wheels on a jet or rocket engine and go fast. It's a lot harder to make a real car out of it. Even modern F1 and NASCAR race cars top out at 230mph or so, because they're built for handling and acceleration rather than top speed.

2007-01-23 07:00:22 PM
185 MPH in fricken 1939??? With the stuff they had, it is amazing that we won the war.

Sure but I wasn't able to find anything specific on race speeds by year. You've got figure that if people are breaking 300 with a car built purely for speed, then 180 isn't unreasonable for racing. I don't know what the state of the art in suspension system was at the time. I do remember a deadly wrecks were not uncommon.

You do know that race cars require acceleration more so than top speed. Anybody can build a car with 12 gears to travel 300mph which accelerates from 0-100 in 2 minutes. The other point is that a race car needs the engine to stay intact the entire race. often rebuilding the engine after each race. A drag cars engine lasts for 3 or 4 bursts and then its useless.

Is it Hitler's "Master Race" car?

2007-01-23 07:22:40 PM
Well put, keydock. Just to put it in perspective, the world land speed record in 1906 was 127mph. The record was achieved by a Stanley Steamer - a steam car with a reciprocating engine (no turbines, or clever stuff like that).

Can't say I'd have fancied driving the thing, what with the vestigial brakes, steering and stability, not to mention the live steam.

Anyone care to google the average speed of racing cars in 1906? My guess would be in the 40mph region - a lot less than half the lsr.

Hitler's Race car? Try telling that to the good people of Auto Union.

2007-01-23 07:24:03 PM
And no matter how often the stupid media are using the phrase "Hitler's Race Car", it still doesn't make it true. Nor was it "built by Porsche".
