Whilst the woman in TFA doesn't seem to understand what decompression actually is, she has that right, it takes a good long while for the gas mixture in your blood to go back to normal, which is why you don't usually go diving on the last day of your long-haul holiday.

I think the shark was just tasting........

Actually, I am serious. Apparently the mouth is the main method sharks have for exploration.

They use their mouth to discover what is floating there. Is it edible or not?

Well then my instinctual self defense would come in happy, assuming sharks don't like the taste of feces.

Jezebels_Ishtar: Yes, if you are planning to FLY. After any dive you have to decompress if you are going to go into high altitudes.

The guy was wearing a lead-vest used for Abalone diving. The Shark bit him, got a taste of the vest, and most likely thought "Screw this, it tastes revolting".

If the shark had bitten down, the guy would be dead.

if you read the article it seems the shark decided he passed the taste test after "tasting" the head and wrapped his teeth around his torso. still, he might have been going for an extra taste before the final bite.

Going to altitude immediately after coming from depth will cause the bends and more than likely kill you.

I'm sure that when this dude was bitten, the last thing he was thinking was doing a controlled ascent. TFA didn't say what depth he was at when he was attacked but I doubt he was hangin at the surface.

/reading about it on the intarwebs doesn't make you an expert.

Sharks seem to have a VERY large amount of strength in their jaws

The difference between a test bite and eat bite is usually a corpse.

STUNNED BY - The idea that someone would say "this is unheard of" , as the quote goes at the end of article - when dealing with such a predator, does that rule out the voices in your head, saying "SHARK!"?

It's a farking Shark, not a dolphin. Now, if this was about a diver being mauled by a dolphin and gouging one of the eyes, this would be a different story...

I always chuckle a little when I hear an expert say that humans are not on the menu. Really? Why not? The damn things eat tires and license plates...why wouldn't we be on the menu?

Also laugh at the experts statistical analyisis. The analysis that explains the likelihood of being attacked by a shark. But they use the entire population instead of people that spend time in the ocean. Divide by the smaller number and see the shark attack ratios then....

I don't think you get a hero tag just for saving your own life. You might get a lucky tag but how heroic is it to risk your life saving your own life?

It's amazing how few people have ever even heard of the
USS Indianapolis - or how it met it's end. What publication did your posting come from - I'm interested in reading the whole thing.

if a shark ever attacks you, fight back! poke eyes if you can, hit its nose if you can, go for the gills if you can. dont debate which is better, they dont want to fight.

nemoxnine: He was diving so we have to fly low to the ground, and there are mountains on the way to Canberra,' Snowy Hydro spokeswoman Debbie Lowry said.

"When you dive you have got to a minimum of two hours adjusting ... it's decompression. The oxygen in your lungs need time to readjust or you get the bends.'

This dude obviously has no idea what he's talking about, but it's good to see that he didn't kill the guy.

+1 for you, Sir!

Actually after scuba diving, you do have to decompress.

Mr Luobikis, 53, said it was a miracle his friend had lived to tell the tale.

"Eric is a tough boy, he's super fit,'' he said. "But I would say that would test anyone's resolve, being a fish lunch.''

I HAD to laugh at this! The Aussies have such a knack for understatement.
I could never go in the water again after that; just seeing "Jaws" freaked me out for years, and I love the Ocean.

Shoot. This guy isn't tough! Now...tough would be, letting the shark swallow him, and on the way down, rip one of his massive teeth out of the sharks mouth, then once he reaches the stomach, use the fresh tooth to gut the bastard, from the inside out! THAT'S TOUGH.

/got nothing, that guy is a badass just for getting away
