Watching the Bush administration get laughed off the world stage almost makes up for Florida 2000.

I'll believe it has been worth it when all the Nixon-era lawless farkwits are cuffed and marched to the pokey.

Cheney to the front of the line with his "executive powers" bullshiat.

What's your solution?

Well, here's a thought. How about establishing a stable democracy over there so that the moderates who think better of the whole kill-and-maim thing will have a voice in their government for the first time ever...
Nah. Never mind - that would take effort, which would make us feel like we're involved somehow.

Yeah! And we can establish that peace-loving stable democracy by invading a sovereign nation, eliminating their police force, killing (arguably) 100s of thousands of civilians and pissing off neighboring countries. An excellent solution for peace if I've ever heard one!

Anyone trying to get them arrested will have to get through all those little extras that Bush has put into some of the bills passed last year. And even if that happens, there will always be "I beg your pardon?"

Nobody should be surprised that this president would lower the bar...if only so it'd be easier for him to get a drink.

What is the thing all these rigions and problems have in common?

Islam

Why are we treating the symptoms and not the disease? Islam is behind the ideology, the fantatism, the poverty, the education levels, the lack of science or social progress, the hatred, and the violence. People are just so scared of hurting someones feelings that we refuse to say what is clear..

Islam is the problem with the world today, we need to cure it, or cut it out like a tumor, or radiate it like a cancer.

Well that deserves a good long round of booing.

The religion isn't the problem. It's the politics. I'm sure most of the regulars in these kinds of threads would agree.

Keep in mind that the VAST majority that follow Islam are peaceful and law-abiding.

Absolute reciprocity - no Islam here until Jews and Christians free in Islamic states.

That's a great idea, except for the part where it's un-Constitutional. And retarded.

Except for the political structures are greatly different in every islamic nation. they have islamic courts, monarchys, tribalism, and so on. But what is the one thing in common with every one? Its islam. You can sugar coat it, you can sweeten it up and clame that "most of the worlds muslims are peaceful" but news reports and interviews clame otherwise. Even "moderate" muslims in western societys hold the same ideals the extremists do, and feel suicide bombing is justifiable, and that israel is to blame for the majority of the middle easts problems.

How can you say "Muslims are peaceful" when the majority of them spout the same religious rhetoric that extremists do?

They don't.

No they don't. Prove it.

and that israel is to blame for the majority of the middle easts problem

So do a lot of people. You don't see them blowing sh*t up and screaming "Death to the West."

Islam is not the problem, extremists who twist their religion are.

2007-01-18 04:55:41 PM
Because extremists have taken over the situation, most Muslim children in that regionare taught to blame all their problems on the Jews, and the existance of the state of Israel. This habit is reinforced into adulthood. That, along with the metamorphism and mystical powers the Jews supposedly have...
Kinda like the Nazis, but without the State of Israel thing.
No brainer.

These extremists you speak of have a tremendous amount of power across the muslim world. For generations these people have controlled the legal and education systems of most of the muslim world. They have already had generations to indoctrinate many, many youth.

It's because of the authoritarian political systems you find in the middle east. Basically the most heavily armed and brutal people get to take power by dominating all the opposition. Once they dominate the education systems in these nations they can raise generation after generation of children ready to die the glorious death of a martyr.

I don't blame Islam. I see this mainly as a problem caused by the political environment found across the muslim world. Either way, Islam is being used to obscure the true intentions of authoritarian nut jobs and it's up to moderate muslims to distance themselves from these wacko's.

Thats hard though, particularly coming from a society without a long history of free speech, and when the moderate muslims receive thinly veiled death threats from fundamentalists, even in countries like canada.

check this article out. When fundamentalist wanted to set up sharia courts in canada the muslim canadian congress and some womens rights groups tried to fight it - and got death threats for it.

Many of the immigrants from underdeveloped nations being their cultural attitudes with them - many of these attitudes (domination of women by men, for example) have no place in my society.

http://crazierthan.blogspot.com/2007/01/sharia-comes-to-canada.html

Hope you enjoy.

BoozePenguin: Hope you enjoy.

Thanks.

And the death threats are out of line, obviously.

But we already know what happens when fundamentalist zealots gain control of a religion.

It's not the religion itself that invites this behavior, but rather the traditions that have sprung into being alongside it.

Consider how warped and twisted Christianity became in the Dark Ages. Completely antithetical to its original tenets, and there were threats, murders and executions aplenty, and just as little free speech.

When someone blames "Islam" for the actions of a few extremists, immediately I think of the millions of peaceful believers worldwide that outnumber them.

And I agree with you completely. I don't blame Islam one bit.

I've got a great story... I have a friend from pakistan (female). Her father practices Islam like a good pakistani man and was very involved in the muslim community over here. He was also abusive in ways that make me sick to my stomach - but ways that are common place in pakistan.

Now, my friend and her mother remain muslims - but when they came to canada they realized that they did, in fact, have rights. They separated themselves from this highly abusive man who was constantly hiding behind his religion. They're both doing much better now although still struggling from the fallout from her fathers abusive ways (he always justified it, cause you know, he's a good muslim man).

They continue to practice Islam - just not her fathers twisted version where violence against women is (somehow?) acceptable. They are "westernized" muslim women. Thats kind of how I see the problem. Pakistani Islam is very, very archaic. Are all pakistani men abusive? no. But there is a prevalent social attitude that violence against women, death threats against women are acceptable.

We need to integrate our muslim populations and allow the next generation (you know, children of immigrants) to see the value in western society, to learn that they have rights so they can shed the baggage of their parents archaic ways. They can remain muslim. But they need to modernize and integrate, for their communities own benefit.

Islam

By far the most disgustingly racist thing I've read all week. Everytime I hear something like this I have to wonder what Jesus camp you attended. Such narrowmindedness and irresponsible, insensitive, uneducated and judgemental behavior has to be the result of specialized training and reinforcement.

You are talking about 1/5 of the worlds population. Do you have any plans that would work that don't include genocide?

Didn't you read the memo?

Genocide solves all problems. It solved the Jewish problem, the Armenian problem, and it's solving the christian problem in sudan as we speak.

What can't genocide solve?

Don't Christians believe that too?

She should be hailed as a hero by militant muslims everywhere.

And militant Southern Baptists too :)
