"Propping up the evil house of Saud in Arabia"

You have a very simplistic understanding of Saudi politics if you think the house of Saud is "evil". Before the house of saud the region was in a perpetual state of civil war along tribal lines, and the only thing maintaining law and order in Saudi Arabia today is the house of Saud. The house of Saud is brutally oppressive, but it's the only way to keep the tribes in line - to this day they pay homage to the king. He keeps the saudi peninsula from becoming a blood bath that would dwarf Iraq.

I don't like the house of Saud, but cmon, when you call the only thing bringing order to the Saudi peninsula evil, you're not paying enough attention to what the alternatives are. Perpetual civil war.

czarangelus:America: Propping up the evil house of Saud in Arabia and trying to install a similar regime in every oil-rich nation in the Middle East.

The Saudis leave us alone and sell us oil. What's not to love? Sure, they may sponsor terrorists under the table, but loosing their oil would cause more problems than a few acts of terrorism (and a regime change would almost certainly interrupt the oil flow). I'd saw we're coming out ahead on that deal...

Ahh my favorite college student is at it again.

Education without experience is useless, and i present czarangelus as a shining example of this in action.

I agree. Removing Saddam was retarded. It's very much a similar situation, but in Iraq it's mainly split along religious lines while Saudi Arabia is split along many more tribal lines.

I firmly believe that even the most brutal government is better then total anarchy - which is what we brought to Iraq and what the downfall of the house of saud would bring to saudi arabia.

2007-01-18 12:55:27 PM
Yep. Good headline.

2007-01-18 12:55:44 PM
Well, she's... sort of right. For limited values of right. That's pretty good for Rice, or any member of the Bush administration.

Most people just want to go about their business and not DIAF, but there are fanatics on all sides, not to mention those governments (ie, everyone involved, really, Iran, Israel, the US, Syria, Turkey) that gain political advantage from the instability and continuous low-level warfare. The common people that get roped into this mess... well... the army's a good job, right? Or they are Glorious Freedom Fighters, Our Cleric/President Told Us So.

Ms. Rice, I largely agree with you on that. So stop supporting the House of Saud and, in general, contributing to the instability? Get your troops out? Actually do SOMETHING that might contribute to the goal of peace?

2007-01-18 12:56:43 PM

Let me clarify before someone jumps to the wrong conclusion...

The Islamic Mhadi is not the same as the Mhadi of the extremist Shi'ites. The latter is a conqueror and demon-hearted (not in a literal sense), while the former is a true Prophet of Peace.

Jaedreth

well now, with an objective explanation like that I'm sure we can move forward towards peace and understanding.

ha hahahhah ahah

heh heh... someone mark it down for the headline contest at the end of the year.

Even as Iraq verges on splintering into a sectarian civil war, four big oil companies are on the verge of locking up its massive, profitable reserves, known to everyone in the petroleum industry as "the prize."

I generally go unacknowledged in political threads. I don't think I want notoriety in these ones.

Everyone does not want peace, they want victory.

2007-01-18 01:16:21 PM
czarangelus: There is no solution that doesn't involve us leaving. If America were invaded by a foreign power, do you think we'd ever capitulate? It could be 500 years down the road and we'd still be setting off bombs near Chinese convoys.

I'd also keep peeing in the car radiator, just like in that movie "Red Dawn." Nothin sez lovin' like some Thermite in your Deng Xioping.

Condoleeza Rice for 08.

She can be the first woman & black president at the same time.

This is FARK. 95% of people here will not even understand the concept/word "Mahdi,' even if you spell the transliteration correctly. Much less anything else you wrote.

dbaggins

Don't worry too much, I am complete dumbass and they, usually, let me keep commenting in political threads. This one was on the verge of taking a nice racists turn, but I don't thinkk the racists hearts are really into it. The Religion of Peace thing had a chance too, but maybe people are bored with it. In keeping with the theme of the article and, most of all, the headline, I guess Ms. Rice isn't doing anything original and is lamely trying to convince or do a vulcan mind-meld thing on the American People that President Bush did the right thing by starting the war in Iraq.

I guess I am of the belief that that part of the world is always at war with itself and it would behoove us to rid ourselves of the reason for needing to engage them -- oil.

Get Roud: Condoleeza Rice for 08.

Why not? With a doctorate in Soviet and East European Studies, she's only about 20 years behind the times.

Palestinians: Wipe out Israel, kill the Jews
Syria: Ditto
Iran: Ditto
Saudi: Ditto
UAE: Ditto
Kuwait: Ditto
Lybia: Ditto
Algeria: Ditto
Pakistan: Ditto
Lebanon: Super Ditto
Egypt: Unoffically Ditto
Jordan: We're with Egypt
Afghanistan: We have enough of our own problems, but yeah, we on board with that too
Iraq: Free for all between Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds. Winner takes all. Oh, and ditto.

2007-01-18 01:47:07 PM
"Israel and any problems related to it, in spite of what you might read or hear in the world media, is not the central issue, and has never been the central issue in the upheaval in the region. Yes, there is a 100 year-old Israeli-Arab conflict, but it is not where the main show is. The millions who died in the Iran-Iraq war had nothing to do with Israel. The mass murder happening right now in Sudan, where the Arab Muslim regime is massacring its black Christian citizens, has nothing to do with Israel. The frequent reports from Algeria about the murders of hundreds of civilian in one village or another by other Algerians have nothing to do with Israel. Saddam Hussein did not invade Kuwait, endangered Saudi Arabia and butchered his own people because of Israel. Egypt did not use poison gas against Yemen in the 60's because of Israel. Assad the Father did not kill tens of thousands of his own citizens in one week in El Hamma in Syria because of Israel. The

Taliban control of Afghanistan and the civil war there had nothing to do with Israel. The Libyan blowing up of the Pan-Am flight had nothing to do with Israel, and I could go on and on and on.

The root of the trouble is that this entire Muslim region is totally dysfunctional, by any standard of the word, and would have been so even if Israel would have joined the Arab league and an independent Palestine would have existed for 100 years. The 22 member countries of the Arab league, from Mauritania to the Gulf States, have a total population of 300 millions, larger than the US and almost as large as the EU before its expansion. They have a land area larger than either the US or all of Europe. These 22 countries, with all their oil and natural resources, have a combined GDP smaller than that of Netherlands plus Belgium and equal to half of the GDP of California alone. Within this meager GDP, the gaps between rich and poor are beyond belief and too many of the rich made their money not by succeeding in business, but by being corrupt rulers. The social status of women is far below what it was in the Western World 150 years ago. Human rights are below any reasonable standard, in spite of the grotesque fact that Libya was elected Chair of the UN Human Rights commission. According to a report prepared by a committee of Arab intellectuals and published under the auspices of the U.N., the number of books translated by the entire Arab world is much smaller than what little Greece alone translates. The total number of scientific publications of 300 million Arabs is less than that of 6 million Israelis. Birth rates in the region are very high, increasing the poverty, the social gaps and the cultural decline. And all of this is happening in a region, which only 30 years ago, was believed to be the next wealthy part of the world, and in a Muslim area, which developed, at some point in history, one of the most advanced cultures in the world.

It is fair to say that this creates an unprecedented breeding ground for cruel dictators, terror networks, fanaticism, incitement, suicide murders and general decline. It is also a fact that almost everybody in the region blames this situation on the United States, on Israel, on Western Civilization, on Judaism and Christianity, on anyone and anything, except themselves."

-- H. Harari, 2004

Peter Pan the play involves a scene where Tinker bell is poisoned I believe, and the audience is encouraged to clap to show they believe in faeries. The louder the audience claps the more they believe and thus Tinker bell is brought back from the brink of death.
