(EurekAlert)   Reanalysis of cigarettes confirms tobacco companies increased addictive nicotine 11 percent from 1997 to 2005. Tell St. Peter at the golden gate - that heaven will have to wait - you just gotta have another cigarette   (eurekalert.org) divider line 77

Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette. Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death...

The first time my daughter heard that song she was NOT impressed. Once she realized it was an anti-smoking song she was OK with it.

And great. Now I'll have Tex Williams stuck in my head the rest of the day. Along with a strange craving for a smoke.

2007-01-18 09:33:33 AM
but nicotine is not addictive.

Thanks for the great song reference subby, I for one am GLAD to have Tex Williams stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

\but isn't all of heaven "outside"?

I for one thank the makers of my Camel Filters for adding higher nicotine content (or at least hope my brand was one they found having higher content) and for making the world's smoothest, most aromatic leaf (per the ad-vert on the box) for my tastey consumption.

Smoking is bad for your health, we all know that.

If it's so farking bad, why not just make it illegal?

What???? You mean the state and federal .gov RELY on that tax???? The hell you say.

TXL

2007-01-18 09:37:37 AM
Really, why does it matter if nicotine increased?

2007-01-18 09:38:08 AM
The tobacco industry has funded numerous studies that draw the conclusion that cigarette smoking can be linked to constant near-divine bliss, vigorous physical fitness, and a drastic increase in attention from whatever gender you're into.

They're playing it clean. They're the tobacco industry!

Wait, how is having more nicotine bad? You'd think if cigarette companies wanted to be evil they'd *lower* the amount of nicotine per cigarette, so that those already addicted would have to buy and smoke more in order to get their fix...

See, you can't trust doctors. They said coffee was bad for you, then it's good for you. Same with butter, same with booze, same with margerine. Personally, I can't wait until crack is healthy again.

People get addicted more quickly, and without smoking 30 a day.

This is true. if they upped the nic content to the level of say...a nicorette patch, you would only be able to smoke one a day.

You have room on this very high horse which is reserved for those of us who know that the film Thank You for Smoking is about the personal relationship between lobbyists for alcohol, tobacco and firearms?

i would definitely bang the alcohol chick

There must be some reason why smokers are so content to live life like a dirty ashtray.

But, hey, stick the cable bill up by a coupla' bucks a month, and all bloody hell breaks loose

I kept waiting for the NRA guy to say "Whammy!"

Oh, and back to the article - I say good on them. They're just giving their customers more bang for our buck.

I was going to correct the earlier posters and say that it was the Commander who did that and not Tex. But I was wrong, I guess.

I'm partial to the Commander's version, as well.

Phil Harris (who would go on to do the voice of Balu in The Jungle Book) has a version, too.

But Tex's is the bomb.

I smoke American Spirits, which have no added nicotine.

The lyrics are
"Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
that your're sorry and you hate to make him wait
but right now you gotta have another cigarette.

I like Doc Watson's version - better guitar playing.

But they do have the highest nicotine content of any American made cig.

Just so you know.

Switching brands would actually cause you to smoke more just to get the same amount of nicotine.

If you don't like the fact that cigarettes are addictive and harmful, I have the perfect solution so that you may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands:

Don't smoke, and leave those who do alone to die in peace.

I don't smoke, never have, and likely never will. i think it's disgusting. However, I don't think I have a right to dictate what other people do with their bodies. I honestly don't care if you smoke, drink, cut yourself, piece yourself, whore yourself out, or go tot he gym 6 days per week. As long as you aren't rude to me when we meet on the street or in the workplace, we'll be able to live with each other.

/grrrrr

Your beliefe system is dangerously out of whack, pal.

Everybody knows that the best way to feel good about yourself is to look down on others and cast aspersions and derision on those who have different lifestyles then you do.

After all the smokers age gone they'll start in on someone else and whatever habits they have that aren't popular anymore.

Black folks used to have seperate fountains and had to ride on the back of the bus.

White people felt pretty damn good about themselves back then.

This antagonism against smokers is no different.

2007-01-18 10:57:35 AM
I love this quote from Sin City, said by Benecio Del Toro's character "Jackie Boy": "A smoker always smokes when the chips are down..."

Ozzy Osborne also said something to the effect that quitting smoking was more difficult than quitting heroin. I dunno if I buy that one though.

/people need to switch to pot
//how many of you farkers still get a buzz from a cigarette?

From now on, call me a 'Freedom Smoker'. I light up smokes in as many public places as I can and protest being kicked out, which is just like blacks riding the bus in defiance of an unjust (and antagonistic!) law.

Hooray for freedom!

You smokers comparing your "suffering" to that of the black people in the first 3/4 of the 1900s is pretty lame. So you can't smoke in public, big farking deal.

I smoke weed (regularly at that) but I wouldn't do it in the library, or at Best Buy. Why do you think you SHOULD be able to smoke cigarettes there?

BwahahAHAHAhahahaha!

Yes, people are born smokers, they are visibly smokers, they'll stay smokers their entire lives and their children will be smokers.
smokers are banned from positions of power, they are stuck doing menial tasks.

Truly, smokers are victims of society just like the jews were victims of nazis

Because, unlike weed, cigs give you a craving that you can't stand. You need the fix, you need it often.
