Nothing annoys me more than municipalities who aggressively fine people for doing things for which no fees should apply. If you pay your taxes, you're paying for the roads. Why should you have to pay a specific fee for stopping along the side of that road and getting out of your car? If you think about it, it should cost a lot more to drive on the road than to park on it. Instead, the opposite is true.

Dammit, no! It's not ironic for someone to get a ticket while covering a story about aggressive parking enforcement, especially while parked in a bus stop. You SHOULD expect a ticket there.

I know too many cops, any yeah, TFA is right about on par. And the Detective is following M.O. there. The cops are only amping up enforcement for whatever reason (seems like a silly way to get a contract to me, but oh well) and ticketing illegally parked cars. The only way there could be a valid claim would be if the cars were parked legally then ticketed anyways. I'm not sure if that's what they were doing with the trucks unloading.

Yes people, RTFA, the police were not issuing tickets to people who were in violation.... they were ticketing cargo trucks for parking in loading zones (even though that's what the loading zones are there for), telling people to stop next to a hydrant and then issuing tickets on the spot for parking next to a hydrant, etc. They are issuing tons of bogus tickets in order to create enough of a nuisance so that their union can get what they want. It's basically a racket and the cops in charge of the racket should be fired and prosecuted, and the ones who were "just following orders" should be fined and suspended.

/was given an BS ticket by an LA Parking Authority meter maid for making a snide comment. The problem was, I was in my car so he got my license number and gave me a double parking ticket.

If all laws were fully enforced to their maximum enforceable extent, society would collapse under their weight. Let the police ticket, arrest, and cite for everything that is punishable, so the populace can see exactly how much of life is illegal nowadays and how much the law exists as nothing but a selective-enforcement cudgel against specific "targets of interest."

Perhaps it'll mean we get some laws repealed, or at least written better.

While I think that the press parking at a bus stop is a bit much, the fact that the police are using a union to apply leverage to the public through intimidation, once again demonstrates that mob rules always fail to deliver "justice" without resorting to violence against others.

I do love the people that come into threads claiming they should be able to park wherever they want at any time and that ticketing is a big conspiracy to collect revenue. These people have no clue that if that were the case, the streets would be meyhem.

If there were no parking enforcement, my neighborhood would be absolute meyhem. All the commuters, basketball fans, baseball fans, and hockey fans would come from the suburbs and take all the spaces (I live near the subway), leaving the residents high and dry. The streets would be strewn with trash and leaves due to a lack of streetsweepers (we have to move our cars from designated spots once every two weeks). Snow emergencies (again, designated streets must be cleared so plows can remove snow) would paralyze the city.

In the last 3 years, I've had ONE parking ticket. Why? Because when I get out of my car, I know what the parking sign says on that street. And I feed the meters instead of trying to beat the metermaid.

So keep up the ignorant rant about how you're inconvenienced. You just make yourself look like a fool.

Doesn't this beg the bigger question of why police are allowed to have unions? After all, do they really need the bargaining power to extort fines from the public?

When I park anywhere in NYC, i triple check the signs to make sure that I'm not parked ilegally. Even if you can park there on a holiday, but the sign doesn't imply it, I won't trust it. Haven't had a parking ticket so far.

Hey, any Toronto farkers here ever been given a ticket while walking to and back from the permit machines?

Last summer, I parked right next to a machine, but it turned out it was out of order (no change on me and the credit card slot was down) so I had to run to the next one and back. I was concerned a traffic cop might leave a ticket while I was trying to get the permit slip.

I was always curious about that...

Those of you saying using the quote from the article about a cop pulling a truck over at a fire hydrant .... How do you think the officer managed to order the guy over AT the fire hydrant? The driver should have kept going to a legal parking spot or a parking lot. I highly doubt that the cop said over his loud speaker " Pull over at the firehydrant ! ".

If all of you would get rid of your cars and use bicycles and public transportation, we would not have these problems.

Because they are a class in society that is comprised of the losers in life. These people in class and education are barely above the criminals they chase on a regular basis.

Our police forces through-out the nation are poorly educated and given authority of the use of deadly force. Unionization only colludes with the criminals that typically run unions.


If you need the services of a union, you have nothing to offer to society in general and certainly nothing to offer a potential employer. Your need of a union defaults you into the class of dead-beat do-nothing pay check receiver.

If your are forced into a union I might have some sympathy. I could counter your indignation by pointing out had you made a different career choice, you would not be in a union, so it's still your fault. Complacency is equivalent to guilt in this case.

Bicycles are for children, college students, and the homeless, and do not fit into any of those categories. It's good to have for exercise, though.

I've been in New York City for about a year and a half now. At some point I got involved in a project that required me to borrow a car for a month to work on. In that month that I posessed a car I managed to get 2 tickets for not moving it for street cleaning. The car only ever moved twice-- both times for the other weeks of street cleaning.

It was 9am, I overslept!

I don't really care about the topic; I just wanted to thank and congratulate the submitter for not using the ironic tag here. Thank god.
