Or you could just wear the opposing team's hat to a Philly sporting event.

I submitted just before it posted to Main, pointing out Philadelphia police are keen to emphasize the service aspect of "To Protect and Serve."

I have to say that's a very messy way to go. If I was going to off myself I would do a dive off a tall building.

Suicide by cop is a dickhead thing to do. Cut your own throat, you pussy.

2007-01-15 01:14:48 PM
Philly cops are pretty cool if you are just an avg. Joe law abiding citizen.

They really do not hassell you at all, it's kinda hard to get a moving violation in Philly.

If you confront them with deadly force though. That's your ass.

2007-01-15 01:15:21 PM
why didn't they shoot his ass in the leg? There was obviously more of them. They could have ended this without any life lost.

I gotta agree with Asteroth, but I wonder if this was actually suicide by cop, or just some crazy mother farker hopped up on goofballs.

This topic has been covered many times before, but FYI, use of lethal force to attempt to wound is very problematic to say the least.

Dude. Eagles fans threw snowballs at Santa because his halftime show wasn't up to snuff, and all that guy brandished was a sack of goodies. You think they're going to shoot to wound if you wave a knife around? That guy got off lucky that the locals didn't defile his corpse in some sort of group ritual. Philly's rough.

agreed, but it's better than using lethal force with the intent of making swiss cheese out of a dude.

why didn't they shoot his ass in the leg?

They tried the taser on him. Nonlethal force didn't work.

The next time some maniac comes at you with a knife why don't you try shooting him in the leg? After all the leg is such a large large compared to the torso! And remember, the worst thing that can happen if you miss is that he stabs you in the face. That's no so bad, right?

For the love of god, if you go after someone with a knife you should expect to be shot repeatedly. It doesn't matter if that person is a policeman or an average joe. You try to stab someone == they try to kill you to protect their own ass. There's nothing wrong with that.

good point. agreed. I don't know the full situation, and should not be judging their actions.

cancerous86: agreed, but it's better than using lethal force with the intent of making swiss cheese out of a dude.

The problem is that lethal force is intended only if the cause justifies lethal results. Shooting to wound implies that lethal force isn't necessary. Cops are trained to use a firearm to shoot at center mass of a target until the threat is eliminated. Shooting someone in the leg does not necessarily eliminate the threat, but could still be lethal in the end.

Erm...to the "shoot him in the leg" crowd...ever try to hit a moving target that small? If you shoot to wound when someone's trying to kill you, you wind up dead.

2007-01-15 01:25:29 PM
How batshiat crazy was this guy that from response time 1:49am to being pronounced dead at the hospital at 2:09am? Within 20 min he was approached, attempted to be disarmed, tasered, and then fatally shot and transported to the hospital (not more than 4 blocks away but...) in 20 minutes or less. I guess Philly police are pretty efficient.

Nothing says "Kill me" like attacking a group of Philly cops with a knife except attacking a group of Philly cops with a knife and actually saying "Kill me"

2007-01-15 01:32:43 PM
I usually am pretty hard on cops when someone gets shot...

But if this guy was brandishing a knife, was tasered, and was still attempting to stab a cop that's his ass. Fark him, if you are stupid enough to attack a cop with a deadly weapon, you better expect to get blown to pieces.

And you NEVER shoot to wound. If you do, you don't need to be shooting at all. It's also a lot harder for a dead person to sue then a wounded person. There is a good chance that trying to kill will STILL only wound, when you shoot someone in self defense aim higher (actually center-mass, but you heard what I mean).

Well... Happy MLK Day to you!

2007-01-15 01:34:28 PM
Come on, cancerous86, if a guy comes at me with a knife I am aiming for the part I am most likely to hit. You think all this ass hat wants to do is wound ME with the knife? No, he doesn't. Let's say I am for the knee cap and miss, and now I got a knife stuck in my chest. The closer that a subject with a knife gets to you, the lower your chances of survival are.

All cops are taught to shoot for center mass. That's the largest area to aim for, the area most likely to hit, and you fire until the threat is eliminated. Lethal force is just that, designed to be lethal.

vertigo32: But if this guy was brandishing a knife, was tasered, and was still attempting to stab a cop that's his ass.

The only problem I have with what they did is that it sounds like they weren't checking their fire very well as they nearly did serious harm to an innocent bystander. Scary.

2007-01-15 01:37:26 PM
yes, a happy mlk day tag would be very appropriate.

Of course it does. Otherwise his ass would fray at the bottom.

Aye, they probably should have been more careful, but that's not one I can really blame the cop for too much. They didn't say how many rounds the cops fired (just that the suspect was hit multiple times and the bystander was hit in the leg), but it doesn't sound like an unreasonable situation...not like they hit the bystander with more rounds then the suspect like they normally do.

I know I wouldn't be thinking that much about what's downrange when I have a gun in my hand and a guy getting all stabby. Yeah, it's their job, but blades are scary and hurty.

They aren't doing a very good job if they wound more people than they are trying to apprehend, IMO. I don't know about you, but I'd rather the cop get stabbed than me getting shot just because I happen to be nearby.

cancerous86: why didn't they shoot his ass in the leg

I hate to dogpile, and I'm not bashing you, but you aren't trained to shoot someone anywhere but center mass. During my concealed handgun classes and other classes I've taken, when you pull your firearm your intent is to kill. You aim center mass and you squeeze.

2007-01-15 01:46:14 PM
I like the part where there are certain areas of a town (any town of respectable size) and certain prominent groups within those areas who, if/when wounded by a stray bullet (cop or otherwise) would just as soon not be treated.

2007-01-15 01:48:29 PM
untrustworthy

Oh, yeah. I'm not saying it was right, good, or that the cop should have been careless enough to fire and allow it to hit a bystander. Just that IF a cop is going to hit a bystander, at least this one has a reasonable excuse.

Not like one of those cases where they shoot two hundred rounds at some jogger with headphones on because he didn't hear them tell him to stop, and hit four different people.

That's the second time this week an African American wielding a knife has been has been shot to death by police in Pennsylvania. A similar incident happened over the weekend in Perry County. Suicide by cop.

Whats funny DaCaptain19 is that that area (9th and Market) if I read correctly, is not one of those areas that one would expect such a thing. Its actually a relatively decent part of town.

i don't know about the rest of you farkers, but i for one am more afraid of the cops than i am of the crooks.

I walked by this on my way into work this morning and thought nothing of the broken window.
I have seen some of the crazy homeless people around here just punch and break stuff at will. I just hope it wasn't my mohawked homeless friend. That guy is a riot once he gets going in his crazy talks.

2007-01-15 02:34:20 PM
Heck if he were in Houston, Texas he wouldn't have needed the knife. They shoot 1 out of every 4 ( not sure if that is unarmed criminals or unarmed citizens).

What I don't understand is how come the taser didn't work "multiple times". I have seen big 350 lb dudes drunk and drugged up, dropping like a sack of salt when they get hit with the taser, once. how come it didn't work on this guy? did they miss him several times? was the battery low? did they not have the proper training on how to use the taser? (which I think is mandatory if you carry it). No mention in any article I have read tells HOW the taser didn't work.
