What, no love for $50s?

2007-01-12 09:12:11 PM
Yeah, what's up with that?

An oil man's money vaults filled with tens? Are you stupid?

/that was rhetorical
//it's obvious that you're stupid

What would OPEC do if we just stopped buying their oil? You know, plunder the Yukon and Alaska for our oil for a few years.

I think it would mean either peace in the Middle East or a World War.

/Prefer $2, because they look fake.

I_C_Weener: What would OPEC do if we just stopped buying their oil?

Probably just wait it out until you used up all of the reserves then hold back production until it was the highest price ever to make up for lost time.

2007-01-13 01:44:42 AM
I have heard of OPEC saying that it is lowering production to "stabilize" prices. If they were really set on stabilizing prices, though, they would also increase production when prices start to rise. Fat farking chance they would ever do this.

2007-01-13 07:32:39 AM
They tend to increase production around the 75 dollar a barrel range.

2007-01-13 07:35:03 AM
So OPEC are out to make a ton of money off of us by making us pay through the nose for oil. You may not like it, but why all the fist-shaking and angry talk about how loathsome they are? If it was America that had oil and not other countries, you know you'd be doing precisely what they are doing.

These days, if OPEC says they're going to cut production, it means oil prices will probably go down. This happened a few months ago.

Why? Because everyone in OPEC cheats, except the Saudis. They get together, agree to cut production, and then go back pump more than they said they would to try and maximize their own revenue.

Over the last few years, OPEC didn't have to limit production, because oil companies were struggling to keep up with global demand. Only now that there is some spare capacity is OPEC talking about cutting production, something they're not very disciplined about doing.

2007-01-13 07:41:30 AM
Uh...America DOES have an awful lot of oil.

Plus, there are new discoveries in the Gulf that have recently been made...two of which put together is estimated to be more oil than in Saudi Arabia.

the problem? 5 years to reach it...and more than likely at some point, the United States will stop drilling, and simply sit on its deposits hoping to be able to conserve their oil.

2007-01-13 07:42:10 AM
/it's supply and demand
//we cut off the supply so there's more demand

to say you douchebags aren't almost photocopy-like is silly.

If you TRULY knew what is going on in the world, perhaps you wouldn't jump on the "I hate republicans" bandwagon like all of you brainless douches do already.

Oh wait, let me see which rabid-online liberal "newssourse" you're going to quote next... and then claim that you're free thinking and open minded while sucking the schlong of whatever pyscho online liberal drivel you're fed and you'll buy it.

Online politics is left for morons....

Personally I don't mind these high oil prices. Gasoline is way too cheap in America. And jet fuel is too cheap all over the world. And that is coming from an aerospace engineer.

A good place to start would be with a carbon tax, which of course would apply to a varying degree to all fossil fuels.

2007-01-13 07:48:41 AM
I thought they only lowered the price so the republicans could win?

Oh well, best laid plans and all that.

The Longshoremen had the right idea back in the '70s. Refuse to load any ships bound for the Middle East. Let the food rot on the docks. Cheaper crude or no more food. Easy enough. Let them eat sand.

can i call BS on this one?

2007-01-13 08:19:32 AM
Obviously the Internet fails some people.

Canada is the #1 supplier of oil imported into the U.S.

But it's easier to whine about the Middle East, apparently.

2007-01-13 08:22:34 AM
Oil is only worth what one is willing to pay for it, and people aren't willing to pay $50 a barrel anymore.

Call me when it reaches $40.

//The squeeze is being put on Venezuela, Iran and Russia in case you haven't figured it out. Iraq is probably sitting on some higher priced oil contracts which they will deliver on when prices are lower. Follow the money, People.

I assume the 'dumbass' tag applies to our wonderful masses.

I was talking to a guy yesterday who resembled Lawrence from Office Space (the two chicks at the same time guy) and he was bemoaning the amount of gas his two large SUVs use. "Took me $65 to fill the Expedition last week." [or something like that] He was taking my order at a tire shop, probably making $10/hour.

The more I walk about society, the more I believe we're headed right down the path to what we see in the movie Idiocracy, and that it's not that much of an exaggeration after all.

"Priced at what the market will bear" is unacceptable now?

Figures the Middle East would hate the free market...

Oh no, $65 for gas?! You don't say... Well, I live in Japan and it costs me at least $50 (sometimes up to $60 depending on the price) to fill up my 4 cylinder sedan. I'm tired of hearing Americans whine about the cost of gas... $65 to fill up an EXPEDITION is insane, I wish gas prices were that low here. The thing is, Americans make more money than any other country in the world on average, and yet you still complain about the "high" gas prices like you can't afford them. What the hell do you spend your money on? I only make around $40k a year and I can pay for my gas here in Japan, buy designer clothing, go out to eat at nice restaurants, and still have money left over to put into a savings account. Not to mention the fact that pretty much everything else is more expensive here as well. I just can't figure it out...

2007-01-13 09:02:14 AM
I prefer walking or riding a bike over a gas powered vehicle....

and secondly, would someone please tell fat macdonalds woman to stop ordering the damn diet cokes, its not gonna change anything.

"Obvious" is the appropriate tag. You don't get to be president of OPEC by supporting low oil prices. "Dumbass" tag evidently refers to submitter

What the hell do you spend your money on?

Easy, sat0shi. I was talking about somebody else. I'm one of the Americans who wants us to be intelligent about energy use.

"I'm tired of hearing Americans whine"

You pay that because of taxes.

stop laying back and taking it everytime politicians raise the tax you wouldn't be paying so much.

2007-01-13 09:12:04 AM
What I find "unacceptable" is the price at the pump. With earl at $53 per barrel, why is it still $2+ at the pump?

I_C_Weener: What would OPEC do if we just stopped buying their oil? You know, plunder the Yukon and Alaska for our oil for a few years.

Or, and I'm just throwing this out there...

We could use less. Take back some of Bush's SUV tax breaks. Increase the gas taxes, etc. Redefine trucks so that SUV's don't get breaks with energy efficiency.

The governments that participate in OPEC require oil to be a certain cost per barrel in order to survive.

Middle eastern governments tend to be very tribal, and run on a fairly simple formula: provide social services to the masses, encourage people to band together creating a trumped up external enemy, and build a massive secret police force.

Social services in the middle east are almost universally paid for by oil revenue. So are the arms to fight "foes" and the secret police forces. Without oil revenue, the entire fabric of the middle east collapses.

The more unstable the middle east becomes, the more oil revenue it needs to provide the illusion of stability. And the less oil revenue a group has, like the Sunni in Iraq, the more violence against external groups (like the Shia) they need to overcome that lack.

2007-01-13 10:13:44 AM
3 years ago OPEC said they thought $20 a barrel was a "fair" price. Now close to $50 is unacceptable. DIAF OPEC.

sat0shi: Americans make more money than any other country in the world on average, and yet you still complain about the "high" gas prices like you can't afford them.

The thing is that while the GDP per capita in the US is high, income disparity is also the highest in the developed world. According to Wikipedia citing the CIA, the countries closest to the US in income disparity as measured by the Gini coefficient are Iran, Uganda, Mongolia, China, Kenya, Uruguay, Cameroon, here it comes United States, Cote d'Ivoire, Costa Rica, Philippines, Dominican Republic and Madagascar. There are plenty of poor people in the US.

No, there are plenty of rich people in the U.S..

Poor Americians equate to rich people in those other countries.

Oh, I'm so poor, I only have two TVs and a ten-year-old car.

There may be a great disparity between that and the uber rich in the U.S., but it doesn't begin to qualify as poor in the rest of the world.

The United States earned the right to oil and SUVs by bringing more wealth to the rest of the world than any other peoples. If some of the downtrodden would stop killing one another and stop raping their 7 year old sisters, they could have goodies too.

Yes, you see... we are financing the development of a country with an indoor ski resort and a hotel with solid gold toilets (These two picked because government funding in Dubai paid for a large percentage of their operating capital)

They cant pay to make manmade islands you and I will never walk on if oil goes back to 10 or $20 a barrel.

Enjoy your gas prices.

And tell OPEC to farking get over it...and keep their investment capital separate from then general operating fund and life would be better for everyone.

/fark you dubai

OPEC used to maintain a $22-$28 price band (pops). Now anything below $53 is unacceptable? I wonder why that happened (yeah yeah "in this post-9/11 world"). Wish I could do the same thing with my salary.

OPEC can try to limit production if they want to try to keep prices high. However, this will be ultimately self-defeating. One thing OPEC nations have going for them is they are all able to produce oil relatively cheaply. The prices they've historically set have provided a reasonable barrier to entry in the oil market. Maintain prices at too high a level, and suddenly it's worthwhile for some company to raise capital and begin retrieving oil from somewhere in the world where it was previously not cost-effective. If OPEC's bite was as bad as its bark, new entrants into the market would cause supply overruns and potentially lead to a huge oil crash. I'd expect them to release metered statements like this to soften the fall in prices, but expect a steady decline in oil prices (with the occasional spike) in spite of the cartel's threats.

Everything in the US is designed to be driven to and spread out.

I live 2 miles from work and still I have to fill my 30+mpg car every week because getting anything requires driving around.
