That was amazing. Can I use it?

Sorry, I hocked it after about a year, or almost 3 years ago. I traded it in for lava lamp. I still think the other guy got screwed.

noneoftheabove: After the psx got the analog controllers, the real suckitude of the 64 became obvious.

What? The analog sticks on Playstation controllers are, and always have been, the worst ever. They are innacurate, poorly placed and have a huge dead zone.

stappawho: Same concept. Do you seriously not understand how an adult could enjoy a show like The Shield which would be considered too mature for a child?

Ok, see, here's the thing:

The Shield is not a mature show. It's explicit. And it's a fine show. I like it. But it's *in* *no* *way* mature -- it's gritty in a way that is designed to appeal to 17 year olds.

So if I enjoy puzzles and manipulating things in a 3D environment and having that good game feeling, maybe I'm going to prefer a Mario game to, say, the 50 cent: Bulletproof game. And maybe I'll enjoy a nice, G rated snowboarding game over BMX XXX. Maybe I like Street Fighter III over some blood spattered X-treme fighter.

I dig GTA, but I think it's sad that people like it because it's "adult". It's not good because it's explicit, it's good because it's innovative and funny.

Funny? Funny like Barney? Funny like Chris Rock? Do you see the difference?

Or do you sit down with your six year old and watch Bigger and Blacker because it's funny?

I too like GTA because it's innovative and funny and a hell of a lot of fun to play. But I don't think the joy I get out of mowing down a street corner of hookers is best shared with a child.

Sony is playing this correctly. Due to their retail price, this isn't something that they wouldn't know would happen.

They're banking on the PS3 being widely wanted at least a year in the future.

2007-01-12 06:32:43 PM Quick Fixer

1) How much did your gaming rig cost, in terms of time and money?
2) Does it run other programs, or games exclusively?
3) When do you plan to replace it?
4) How well does it play when matched with players with different hardware specifications than your machine?
5) How many people can play on your gaming rig simultaneously, in the same room? Do they need their own rigs, or can they share yours? Can they play from the couch, or must they be seated shoulder-to-shoulder with you?

1 - enough
2 - lots
3 - roll it till the wheels fall off
4 - Fine
5 - none, but youre not allowed to gloat because furiousxgeorge beat you to the point.

interesting astroturfing going on in this thread. I'll just leave it at that.

Look, the ps3 is dead on arrival. Let's face it. It's all about the games and they don't have any.

I can afford any next gen system I want, and right now I'm waiting to get a Wii at retail. That's how it rolls. I won't buy a PS3 because there is NOTHING WORTH PLAYING ON IT, and no exclusives on the horizon worth the up-front sunk cost of the console.

X360 is about to hit with the zephyr, either screwing all the early adopters or giving fence-sitters an excuse to go MS instead of Sony. Wii is already the must-have console of the year. You can surmise and wish and rationalize all you want, but the mass market has spoken.

That being said, I did buy a Neo Geo AVS back in the day, so I suppose the ps3 might recover at least some niche of the market if it had just a few, maybe two or three, killer apps.

Blu-ray is dead because porn went HD-DVD. End of discussion.

Stupid Fat Hobbit: There's one game that I know of that can be played with either the Wiimote or the classic controller, but in general I think games will be designed to use one or the other.

When more games come out, they'll have more where you can use either controller. I bet there are people who would buy a Wii, but they don't like the goofy controller. Having games that could be played with either controller would open up the market even more.

2007-01-12 06:41:22 PM
Ok, my point is: there's plenty of stuff that's funny to everyone. And fun for everyone.

And that marketers have made a living off of selling cheap, stupid entertainment crap to teens because it's 'adult'.

So a better example would be: Bugs Bunny or Chris Rock.

2007-01-12 06:42:11 PM
Pxtl: On wiimotes: anybody been having trouble with them? One of mine has conked out in-game a few times. Pissing me off, seriously. I'm imagining that something is slipping loose in the various shaking gestures it goes through.

Check your batteries. I have three Wiimotes and I have noticed that on a few occasions as well. When I checked the battery menu (home button), I usually had one or two bars (batteries tend to "recover" a bit overnight) so I just put some new ones in (some really cheap ones I had lying around), which helped for a day or two (= plenty of play time over the holidays). The weird thing is that after I checked the batteries with a voltmeter, they seemed fine. But when I tested them in another Wiimote, I got the warning screen after less than 30 minutes. I suppose, the Wii doesn't like cheap batteries. Also, using the Nunchuck seems to draw a lot of power. But, yeah, it's probably the batteries (unless you're talking about Wii Sport Boxing which just happens to have jerky controls).

Durendal: There should seriously be a GTA:Wii title. Now you really can beat those hookers to death!

AFAIK they're still talks. If that GTA:Wii thing doesn't go anywhere, I'll probably pick up a 360 for the next GTA game but I'd love to see Rockstar take advantage of the motion-sensing capabilites of the Wii's remote (to be honest, I am not even sure that's a good idea - it's just that I'd really love to see some major 3rd party franchises on the Wii and with the GTA series being pretty popular (not to mention my personal favorite), that seems like a logical choice).

lordargent: /as for my original xbox, I need to beat Prince of persia 3. Then I'll probably get it modded.

If you can, you might want to try a softmod before you pay to have someone install a modchip.

Zoot not Dingo: I remember back in the day my brother and i saved our allowances and went in halvsies on the original NES w the gun and powerpad. It was awesome. We had games systems before and since but it will always be the most warmly remembered.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. That's also why I consider the VC to be pure genius from a business point of view. It gets you lots of money (hell, I have paid good money for games I already bought for more than a decade ago - games that I could easily play on the original console that I probably still have somewhere in my garage or using an emulator), tons of goodwill (easier times, anyone?), great publicity and what makes it really beautiful: it doesn't cost you (=Nintendo) a dime but it helps immensely to revitalize your major franchises for free. Pure genius.

And it still sold about (according to wiki) 20 million fewer consoles than the NES which was released 5 years later. And just who are these people who were buying Ataris in 1992, or even 1989 for that matter? I never met one.

I'm not trying to start an argument here. I'm saying that the console's ability to age should be taken into account when comparing introductory prices to 30 years ago.

Technology is advancing much faster than it was 20-30 years ago. It's easy to see why consoles only have a 5 or 6 year lifespan.

did you even read those articles?

Yes, yes I did...did you?

If so you would have realized the 1st link was from MAY 2006, showing the direction the Adult industry was leaning toward.

The 2nd article then showed how DigitalPlayground tried to go Blu-ray but then could not find a manufacturer to push out the Blu-ray movies since they were afraid SONY would come after them.

So, DigitalPlayground (and others apparently) are now going HD-DVD

Top porn publisher changes mind on Blu-ray, switches to HD-DVD
Porn Industry Says Screw Your Blu-Ray We're Using HD DVD
Wither Blu-ray? Porn Industry Backs HD DVD

...Digital Playground simply could not find a facility that would replicate porn on Blu-ray discs. "Most replication services are either owned by Sony or have ties to Disney," he says. Neither organization, it seems, wants to tarnish its family-friendly reputation by cranking out dirty movies.

Yeah, it could go that way, but personally I don't really see it. It's not as if it's impossible to make a game with effectively traditional controls for the Wii remote anyway, Zelda being the obvious example. Playing through that felt remarkably similar to playing previous Zelda games with a normal controller, with the exception of first-person aiming. Functions that used to be mapped to a button press are now mapped to a small gesture. Any percieved 'goofiness' aside, the controller didn't affect the experience much. It all begins to feel perfectly natural very quickly.

The Wii is wonderful! I think though that the xbox360 is being overlooked here. Which is understandable since Sony has had a solid grip on the industry the past few years, and Microsoft unfortunately has had a bad rap due to it's OS and overblown overheating issues.

Let me tell you all softcore and hardcore gamers something. The Xbox 360 has been one of the best pleasures of my short existence. So far I have played Oblivion, GRAW, Gears of War, Viva Pinata, Call of Duty 2 and 3, Dead Rising, and PGR3. I have played net gen gaming for the past year already and enjoyed what some of you who own a PS3 are barely enjoying. There hasn't been a game that visually looks like Gears of War ever! The graphics are sick in that game, xbox live has been nothing short of a treat, I have downloaded all my favorite Chappelle shows, and played Street Fighter II against a stranger for the first time since 97'. I honestly don't see anything on PS3 matching Gears of War visually in the near future, and farther along PS3 might come out with something but by then the 360 will be maxing itself out with developers. Don't fool yourself folks, drop the xbox 360 apprehension and pick one up.

FWIW, I went to two Best Buys in SF for Wiimotes, with no luck, but I went to the Target in Colma and they had like twenty on the end cap next to the console display. No nunchuks though.

thermodie: remember the N64 bit the dust pretty hard and sony was putting there foot up there ass so far it was knocking there teeth out?

Yup. But, as I remember it, there was a lot more to that (piracy being one major issue). When it comes to the N64, the one thing I remember first and foremost though is the endless hours of Goldeneye multiplayer. I'm not really into FPS games but, back then, Goldeneye, four controllers (often with a dozen or so people in the room) and a lot of beer was just a perfect way to start the night.

ArcadianRefugee: Maybe, but the 360 won't play the library of PS2 games that I have.

Of course, the PS3 may not play all of those games, either.

Plus, I don't believe the Guitar Hero controller works in the PS3, does it?

ArcadianRefugee: No, but your PS2 does.

Actually, no, it doesn't.

/video went out

What does that say about Sony's quality control? Batteries asplodin', PS1 laser head problems, Slimline PS2 problems, Bravia high-end LCDs with tons of problems... I've got a stack of Sony DVD-ROM drives to attest to it, as well as a few PSX and a couple PS2s as well. Sony has become the GM of the electronics world.

FarkinFarker: More studios are supporting Blu-Ray than HD-DVD.

It's far too early to declare a winner yet, but consider several things:

1) HD-DVD's interaction system is a bit better than Blu-Ray
2) Capacity isn't an issue, since both formats can add more layers down the road
3) HD-DVDs are as cheap to make as DVDs, but BDs cost over 10x as much to press.
4) Sony just screwed over it's hardware Blu-Ray partners by dumping a $500 player onto the market - no secret either that the player is costing Sony $250-300 per unit. If I was Samsung and their other Blu-Ray partners, I'd be calling Toshiba to get on the HD-DVD train, because my $1000 players are just going to sit on shelves now.
5) Porn backs HD-DVD (Conversely, Sony shuns Porn). It's not as big as they say, but it is a factor. Today, more porn is dealt through your web browser, but DVDs are still a hot market, and when deciding which player to get, who wants to cut out the possibility of HD porn?
6) While both consortiums are DRM-crazy, HD-DVD's DRM has already shown some leaks, and we know that Sony-backed Blu-Ray is going to be heavy on the restrictions, after the rootkit fiasco. Point here goes to HD-DVD for well-informed customers.
7) Cost. HD-DVD players are cheaper becuase they cost less to make. They have room to drop even further. Blu-Ray doesn't have the luxury, and the less momentum they have, the harder it is to produce the yields that drive production pricing. Blu-Ray will always chase HD-DVD players in price, even when a giant like Sony dumps product to promote it.
8) Neither format has excited the public, so dumping strategies will only make matters worse. Sony gambled and they will probably lose big. Currently, they are $500 MILLION in the hole, and it doesn't look to get any better anytime soon. I'd be surprised if BD movie sales have topped $1 million, and that's gross, not net. It gets better: Sony is now trying to dump movies to spur growth and demand for players, but it probably won't work and will only bleed them even more. In the end, whatever mementum Sony does achieve will last as long as their cash flow does. At this rate, I can't see it lasting much more than a year or so.

On the other side from the Hi-Def next gen DVD formats is the fact that you can get HD over satellite, OTA broadcast, cable, and even Microsoft offers HD movies for download (you need Live and a premium Xbox 360, but not the HD-DVD add-on). For now, it's serving the limited market for Hi-Def video quite well - and it is a limited market. Penetration of HDTV is growing, but I can't imagine it's more than 5% of the TVs out there, yet.

So in short, Blu-Ray may be ahead of it's time, and too expensive for both consumers and producers of media and hardware. The economics are all wrong, and questionable for HD-DVD (but the fact that they are NOT dumping product, but shipping at a profit puts them firmly in the "niche" market which can idle until demand grows).

Oh *man* some people in here are off the mark.

JudgeReinhold: Unless you're not talking about US dollars, the NES retailed for $200 and Super Mario Brothers 3 was $50, as were 99% of new NES games.

Brand loyalty to Nintendo and brand loyalty to Sony are two completely different beasts. Brand loyalty to Nintendo comes not from their systems but to their games. Their first party games are always excellent from a technical standpoint, regardless of one's interest in the game itself. Brand loyalty to Sony is only peripheral loyalty given that the vast majority of Sony's success with the Playstation is on the backs of the third parties. Sony loyalists aren't loyal to Sony per se, they're loyal to SquareEnix for Final Fantasy or to Konami for Metal Gear Solid.

My local Best Buy (and it's not a very big one) has three chest-high square piles of PS3s. The managers looked like they were about to crap themselves as some stockboy kept piling up more PS3s that nobody even glanced at.

The blue-shirts who work in the gaming section were frantically running around telling everyone that "YES, WE HAVE PS3s IN STOCK!" Nobody gave a shiat.

Wiis were sold out, the accessory rack was stripped bare, and people were picking up Xbox 360 and DS games by the handful.

/I LOL'ed.

2007-01-12 07:02:37 PM
We had a PS3 sitting around at work for the longest time. Just this past week, I actually turned it on, and here's my honest impression.

Using the actual system is a pain in the dick. The vast spiderweb of menus and submenus in the shell is mind-boggling. I could have sworn I saw "Network Settings" listed in 3 different places. It's just not intuitive or user-friendly, AT ALL. Oh, you want to use your SOCOM USB headset? All you have to do is navigate to SETTINGS>>ACCESSORY SETTINGS>>AUDIO SETTINGS and enable it!
Christ Almighy, it's simpler to use a headset with WINDOWS than the PS3, and that's saying something.

Their online service is bare. Plus, to join it, you have to answer about a hundred billion questions about how Sony is either great, or the greatest console maker to ever exist, and all sorts of other annoying "what can we market to you" questions indicative of a bunch of lazy stuffed shirts begging for help because they're out of touch with the market.

At any rate, as for software, I played Resistance. It's not a bad FPS at all. Story mode is pretty ho-hum, but 40 player online team deathmatch (shotguns only) is VERY fun. I also played that off-roading racer demo at Best Buy. Gorgeous, but wasn't a big fan of using the tilt to control the bike. It probably would be better if you taped the controller to a broomstick or some bike handlebars, because having to hold your hands so close together to simulate motorcycle handles just feels awkward.

I don't doubt it will be a kickass system to have in a year or two. Hopefully Sony doesn't go bankrupt in the meantime, the industry would suffer severe negative impact if that were to happen.

As for people touting the 20gig version, it's a stripped down POS missing tons of other features, that's why no one is buying it.
