What kind of crappy store is this. No display, just stack them on the bottom shelf, or floor if you can't find enough shelf space. Just pile them up and with a tiny shelf price tag somewhere underneath. I don't really know what I am trying to say but this is some kind of special crappy retail going on here. Specifically the bottom image.

Sad thing is, that $600 would've made at least a few bucks during that time, had it even been sitting in a plain old savings account.

The Wii is too focused on kid's games for me to be interested. Plus, I'd rather have the better graphics, mature game play,

The whole concept of mature game play confuses me, is playing beach volleyball to get a look at polygonal psuedo-tech-titties something we in society generally consider mature?

Eventually we have to come to grips with the fact that we're just basically playing army man (ex: call of duty), guns (rainbow six), house (the sims), or pretending to be magical amnesiac elf wizards (every RPG in the universe). There's nothing the least bit adult about it... fun as hell, yes, but not adult. I do grown up legitimately stuff all day, like spreadsheets and derivative security pricing models, and in much of my remaining spare time I read dark russian literature, the last thing I want to be in the time I devote to GAMES is mature.

I honestly feel even more ridiculous when a game tries to make me feel like a grown up macho man by having my little pretend army man saying fark a lot than when I'm shamelessly trying to launch mice in a rocket ship or playing bongo drums with a gorilla.

I'm looking forward to getting my Wii. Whenever they actually become readily available in stores.

I can wait a few weeks. I'm not so desperate that I will pay jacked-up prices to buy one off of eBay.

I think they intentionally make the consoles so that there aren't any real benchmarks to say, "This one is better". I had some geek take 10 minutes to answer me which was more powerful/had better graphics.

Also, Golden Eye was completely overrated

It can, it just hasn't yet. Remember, the reason that the sword swinging in Zelda isn't 1:1 is because it's first and foremost a GameCube port (same reason it's graphics aren't as stellar as they could be). Play some Wii sports baseball and move your bat around pre-pitch... you'll find the Wii has 1:1 capacity, if the developers take the time to use it!

alywa: Sony seems to be in real trouble right now. Blu-ray isn't faring well, the PS3 is sitting on shelves, and Nintendo is eating their lunch. I think this is corporate karma for their horrible decisions over the last few years (Root Kit, Memory Stick price gouging, failure to understand the MP3 market, etc).

Remember my words earlier: Sony will be forced to offer a dual format PS3 because Blu-ray will go nowhere....especially now that Microsoft is on the HD-DVD bandwagon.

Blu-Ray is still looking better than HD-DVD.
It is a superior format hardware wise and has a lot more studios behind it, and the money will follow the content.

The big problem for Blu-Ray won't be beating HD-DVD, it will be if consumers care at all for EITHER format. It isn't that unlikely that both will fail.

I will buy a Wii pretty soon, but the only reasons I will buy a PS3 are Metal Gear Solid and GTA.

If it's for only those two games, don't bother buying the PS3 for at least another year. I did the same thing with the PS2; the first batch of systems was buggy, expensive, and lacking in good launch titles, so I just waited a couple of years and bided my time with cheap, used, older-gen titles.

I bought one at Target right before Christmas, made exactly one cent on it. I'm sure I could have at least pulled in $100 a week sooner.

FINALLY got 3 extra Wiimotes on Wednesday. That marked the first time I had seen any in a store.

XBox 360 for the "serious" games, Wii for the party games. It's great.

I really wish I bought some Nintendo stock a year ago.

I could be wrong (hell, I thought Betamax was da bomb) but I think in a couple of years the PS3 will be thought of in a much better light. I won't shell out $600 for one, but it is one wicked ass system. To an old fart that played Pong, and loved it, the graphics are unbelievable. Blu-ray will, I think, become the standard and once more games are written for the advanced abilities of the PS3, I think people will come around.

Of course Sony being dicks does not help the cause.

Personally, my problem with the kiddie game aspect of Nintendo is not a feeling that the games are beneath me because they are childish, but an annoyance with the aesthetic uniformity of Nintenod games.

I want diversity of styles and looks in my games. The last couple PS2 games I bought were God of War, Shadow of teh Collosus, Okami and Katamari.

None of these games look, feel or play the same way. They are totally different and unique.

OTOH, most nintenod games look and feel identical and most play pretty similarly as well.

This isn't a good thing.

so here's my deal with the Wii. I've thought about getting one and yes, they look fun as hell. But when I play my ps2, im usually chilling in my couch with a beer close by. so its basically when im just vegging out.

i feel like with the wii, you have to move around like a madman with all the swinging back and forth, etc.. Doesn't seem very relaxing.

doesn't that get annoying?

Really? I've heard the opposite. Apparently, Blu-Ray is currently using an older, less efficient codec, which translates to an inferior picture than HD-DVD.

2007-01-12 05:50:32 PM
I am not a gamer. My kids (14, 12, 8) like Nintendo systems, though the oldest bought a used PS2 last year (to try Kingdom Hearts, which he didn't like -- oy). They love the Wii. And I have been playing Tennis every night for about 15-20 minutes.

When/if Sony and MS incorporate new input interfaces with their graphics, look out.

2007-01-12 05:50:35 PM
I read (on the internet for what thats worth) that a Wii is $185 to manufacture. Whereas the PS3 is about $650. I know they make all their money in licensing...

but maybe, just maybe, Sony doesnt really want to sell any PS3's! They are *saving* money by not selling any... yeah, thats the ticket

Not kidding in the least. Most people who aren't fanboys and lived through that time felt the same way.

- The nintendo was relased later, yet the graphics almost looked worse than the PSX

- There was no video ram

- The cartridges were a horrible move, costing Nintendo classic games like FF7

- THe controller was horrible. It looked ugly, had bad ergonomics, a bad analog stick comparitively (even if it did it first), and the button set up was bad.

There were some classic games, but not nearly as many classic games as its rival the PSX had.

The whole concept of mature game play confuses me

As lordargent pointed out earlier.

/IE, I had fun watching "finding nemo", but sometimes I feel like "requiem for a dream".

Same concept. Do you seriously not understand how an adult could enjoy a show like The Shield which would be considered too mature for a child?

2007-01-12 05:52:14 PM
lordargent: The games that are for kids (fun or not) tend to be a lot less complex than games targeted to adults. And sometimes, you just need the complexity.

Yeah, I like games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear, Halo, Silent Hill, etc. Nintendo's games always seem so...cartoony. I think the only reason the Wii is so popular is because of the novelty of its controller. In a couple years, the novelty will wear off and most people will want to go back to the traditional type of controllers. In fact, I won't be surprised if, down the road, Nintendo starts making traditional-type controllers for the Wii.

I think people are waiting for the price of the PS3 to drop, and for more titles to come out. My boyfriend traded in his Xbox for a 360 about a week ago (and he just bought Gears of War today). He also has a PS2, so it has nothing to do with brand loyalty. He's just waiting for the price of the PS3 to drop.

itsnattatumah: i feel like with the wii, you have to move around like a madman with all the swinging back and forth, etc.. Doesn't seem very relaxing.

It depends on the game. With Wii Sports, yeah, you usually need to get up and swing the controller around. Zelda, you don't even need to unrecline your chair.

2007-01-12 05:52:19 PM
I don't have any of the next gen consoles. WoW pretty much killed my desire to play console games, but when I stop playing that I'm sure I'll return to the consoles.

If anything, I'm sure I'll get a PS3. Never really liked the XBOX (I already have a computer thanks) and I don't want to give Microsoft any more money than I have to. The Wii doesn't interest me. If I want to get some exercise, I think I'll go outside. The types of games typical to the system haven't interested me since I was a kid.

The Wiimote doesn't interest me, the XBOX controller can suck it (even the smaller ones) and the motion sensitive aspect of the PS3 controller is pretty blase to me as well. I do like the shape of Sony's controller (the best since the SNES controllers) and button placement.

In the end, I'll lean toward PlayStation because of the controller and the fact it's getting VF5 (OMFGDROOL). It just kinda sucks I'll be shelling out $500 for only a few games.

/these new fangled controllers are crap

You have your taste and I have mine. Personally, I'm very interested in WWII. I've done a lot of reading about battles, and I love the documentaries. So I find it fun and interesting to immerse myself in that environment.

Plus, games like GTA, Scarface, Battlefield, Mercenaries, etc. have gameplay you'd never see on Nintendo.

The appeal of cutesy little animals, etc. aren't always as interesting to me as those you mostly see on Nintendo. I don't mind the occasional Ratchet and Clank type game, which is available through Sony, but the games are definately more along my lines of interest.

To each his own I guess.

2007-01-12 05:53:12 PM
NightOwl2255: I think in a couple of years the PS3 will be thought of in a much better light.

I'd agree with you, but the only way the PS3 will be seen in a good light is if they get lots of exclusive (or timed-exclusive) AAA quality games on it. However, the poor initial performance means developers will be hesitant to limit their marketshare, which means more multi-platform onto the X360, which means less reason to buy a PS3, which makes developers more hasty, which etc. etc. etc.

There's a critical mass somewhere where the console sales boost game development which boosts console sales. Every successful console in the past has had that (NES, SNES, PS1/2). The PS3 is already losing a lot of its exclusives including Grand Theft Auto, Virtua Fighter, and Dragon Quest. At some point the feedback loop kicks in and the PS3 becomes the next Virtual Boy.

LANshark: but maybe, just maybe, Sony doesnt really want to sell any PS3's! They are *saving* money by not selling any... yeah, thats the ticket

That was actually the case on the shortage of XBox 360's at launch. MS wanted to get their costs down more so they wouldn't lose at much per unit.

I was lucky enough to win a Wii right before xmas. Bought Zelda, Ultimate allicance and Rampage to test out the system. My inital thoughts were that it was a very cool new approach. Then I played Ultimate Alliance. After about 30 mintues of hacking, slashing and jabbing, my arm got tired. Now I generally like to play for hours when I get my chance to play (My wife hogs the game consoles), I just don't see this being fun in those situation. I found myself just wanting a regualr controller or the ability to turn off the motion stuff and play as normal. So for me Wii = Cute and a neat idea, but really I just want a PS3, which I got by trading my Wii for one. So far very happy. Loving the dowloadable games and playable demos. And if the rumors are true, possibly free games in the near future!!

The "mature game" doesn't mean gore and T&A.

The games that well, the nintendo systems have lacked in spades for the last two generations, and seemingly also this one, are the grand epics you say on the ps1/2 and to an extent the xbox. the large, storydriven rpg, adventure games, action thriller, etc, just weren't availible in any real quantities on nintendo.

the wii's most popular games seem to be the pick up and play ones, but those aren't exactly known for depth. They tend to get old after a few days/weeks, and then they get tossed into the closet for the next few years.

Kids and elderly folks don't have any problem with this, but for the mainstream, as well as the hardcore, there just isn't anything to hold interest. It's a system full of rentals, even zelda was easily finished in a rental span.

I heard way a long time ago from a guy who worked at DICE up here in canada, that the PS3 was a biatch for the studios to develop for with regards to the tools and libraries. It was not a preferred platform to develop for from a studio perspective.
