(Canoe)   In Argentina, the mentally ill are using radio as therapy. It happens in America also, but here they call it "A.M. talk shows"   (cnews.canoe.ca) divider line 75

Listening to AM talk shows is a symptom of mental illness, not a therapy.

2007-01-09 02:27:45 PM
Ha, sports talk radio is teh awesome.

2007-01-09 02:29:45 PM
I dunno, I found Art Bell to be rather therapeutical.

Amusing, batsh*t crazy, interesting tangents...

Wow. Can't top the headline or the Weeners, so I'll just type this meaningless rubbish.

AM is better than the crap on the FM band.

2007-01-09 02:32:24 PM
TFA is about broadcasting shows as therapy for the mentally ill. which is still, as Lionel pointed out, a symptom.

2007-01-09 02:41:59 PM
ah, the intellectualism of the FM disc jockeys and shock jocks are just too much for me. please, another hour about boobies. I can't absorb it all in.

2007-01-09 02:42:32 PM
It's not helping, either. In fact, it's enabling.

2007-01-09 02:46:13 PM
Yeah. The VCR and the DVD, there wasn't none of that crap back in 1970. We didn't know about a world wide web. It was a whole different game being played back when I was a kid. You wanted to get down in a cool way? Just picture yourself on a beautiful day with the big bell bottoms and groovy long hair, walking in style with a portable CD player...

Not! No...you would listen to the music on the AM radio. Yeah, the AM radio.

BTW, is there a better term for this generation-long phenomenon than "Liberal-bashing industry?"

Let's have another hand for Subby. He'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your waitress.

Lionel Mandrake: Wrong. Listening to talk radio is the leading cause of mental illness in America.

Lionel Mandrake: Listening to AM talk shows is a symptom of mental illness, not a therapy.

I think subby meant to imply the people on the talk radio show are mentally ill, but that doesn't exclude your point.

I'd make an Air America joke here but their ratings are so bad any societal effect is negligible.

What is the content per hour ratio? The local sports station seems to have about 30 minutes total of host monologue, or host talking with callers/guests. The other 30 minutes is ads, traffic, sports news updates, promos, etc.

Also notice how often their "guests" are just reporters from another radio station, newspaper, or web site. Not actual coaches, players, athletic directors, etc.

It's really a "chicken-or-egg" question with mental illness and talk radio.

God freaking damn it, Olbermann sucks. I mean really, he had GOLD material there, and it was the most tiring, disappointing interview I've ever seen. You give that same footage to Stewart or Colbert and I'd be laughing my ass off.

He's like the John Kerry of television.

There's only one FM talk station in the country (AFAIK) worth listening to. WCKG in Chicago.

Opie & Anthony (never listened to the show, but it sounds like it's better than Mancow)
Stan & Terry show
Penn Jillette
Steve Dahl
Tom Leykis (kind of a blowhard, but amusing)

AM in Chicago sucks, though.

2007-01-09 04:35:15 PM
Yup, been listening to more AM talk radio than the drivel on FM lately. I also stop at teh indie record store once a week for another used cd of the classics (jazz, death metal, Tom Waits).

...oh yeah, and Wesley Willis, too

I'd always wondered where Michael Savage broadcast from.

2007-01-09 04:40:35 PM
Neil Boortz and his crew are quite entertaining, but I almost always change the station when he takes a caller. I don't really need to hear what Bob in Cincinnatti thinks about the issue.

ShirleySerious: There's only one FM talk station in the country (AFAIK) worth listening to. WCKG in Chicago.

That lineup is the same as just about every other FreeFM station in the country. Almost verbatim what we have on KIFR in San Francisco or KLSX in Los Angeles.

/and Tom rocks, BTW

proleboy: I'd always wondered where Michael Savage broadcast from.

He is based in San Francisco, amazingly enough. I'm surprised he can leave his house in Pacific Heights or wherever and not get his ass beat. Also amazing is that he has the highest rated talk show in the Bay Area.

conway (tim conway jr.) and whitman are most entertaining and their game, what the hell did jesse jackson say, is upper crust radio.

Why would you willingly listen to anything on AM or FM radio anymore, if you already have an iPod (or XM or Sirius, for that matter)?

Yup, no liberal bias on fark...

There are a lot of liberals here, a lot of conservatives, and a lot of libertarians, etc. But based on most thread comments, the liberals do seem to outnumber everyone else by about 10 to 1.

Whatthefark: /My vote for talk radio...Tom Leykis.

The radio talk show that is... not hosted by a right wing wacko or a convicted felon. No!

I like Tom's show. A call in radio show that isn't some big right/left wing circlejerk. How novel.

Yes, but the lion's share of liberals are just teenaged dittoheads - the kind of people who just kneejerk-shout "BUSH SUCKS" and contribute very little else to the conversation. The proportion of serious political debaters is much smaller, which is what keeps Fark political flamewars nice and lively.

I don't know what the hell it was, but a few days ago I was flipping through the stations, and on some AM station a lady called in saying that she thought she was the reincarnation of a puppy. She always liked to lay on a blanket on the floor. And have her food served in bowls so she can eat like a dog. Fetch is one of her favorite games. Oh, and she was 34. From Canada, no less.

I can't stand talk radio. I especially can't stand Tom Leykis. Why people would listen to this guy's relationship pontificating, I have NO idea.

"Big" Ed Schultz, and Team Fargo, are definitely worth listening to. Get 'em up here in the Twin Cities on Air America, AM950.

Always reasoned, intellignt conversation, no screaming idiots just complaining and bashing the "other" party.

Knowing someone is trying to make a difference keeps me happy on my 15 min.ride to work.
