walk on = pays tuition until offered a scholarship

I'm not really a football fan, and though I'm a USC alumnus I really don't care that much about the school... But some of these comments are really vicious. I don't get it - why are people being so cruel to this guy? The kicking jokes, fine, whatever, but some of these other ones...

my first thought was that they got the location slightly wrong and that he tried to sneak into the surf line at lunada bay and the "bad boys" pushed him off the cliff as retaliation.

very sad- walk on athletes can usually get a scholarship at a lesser school, but want to play for a certain college so they forego the scholarship and just walk on.
