Had there been no cover up, they probably wouldn't have had any problems.

When you cover up the fact that you just shot a man in the back, it immediately raises the strong suspicion that you knew that the shooting was unjustified and illegal; had you lawfully shot in self-defense, you would probably obey the law and report the incident dutifully. Disposing of the evidence and failing to report the incident cast the whole thing in a much more sinister light than the testimony alone could have done.

Also, the article you linked is factually incorrect. It claims Ramos said he saw a gun -- according to the US Department of Justice, Ramos testified under oath that he verified the man was unarmed prior to the shooting.

From the US Department of Justice report:

Agent Ramos also testified that when he saw Aldrete-Davila in the ditch, he had an opportunity to look at Aldrete-Davila's hands, which he is trained to do for self defense and defense of another, and did not see any weapons in either of Aldrete-Davila's hands. When Aldrete-Davila almost reached the river, but while he was still out in the open vega area, he heard numerous gun shots. Compean fired at Aldrete-Davila at least fourteen times and Ramos fired at Aldrete-Davila once.

According to the testimony of seven other Border Patrol agents who arrived at the scene of the incident after the
shooting, neither Compean nor Ramos mentioned that the driver who absconded had a gun, or that any agent's life was
in danger. Defendant Compean repeatedly denied that he had been injured by the driver and refused the supervisor's
offer to file a Report of Assault on his behalf.

You should read the full report; there is even evidence of a conspiricy to destroy evidence when Compean asked a colleague to return to the scene and dispose of ammunition casings if he found any.

all we're there for is to work and help build the fences and stuff. In no way is the national guard a military force that has authorization to fight. We're just there for the manpower. Think of it like a military contracted Great Wall of China.

Fewer, at any rate.

Turn Border Patrol Agents into Immigration police and start capturing and deporting ILLEGAL immigrants and imprisoning executives at companies that are caught hiring them

Yeah and you want a civil war with that? What would happen if you would forcefully deport illegal immigrants all over the country? I'll remind you that they are over 15 millions. And with the corporate america, it's impossible. You would need a revolution to do that.

Well, yeah, considering that both agents admitted they shot at a man they believed was unarmed, they'd probably have been in a lot of trouble anyhow.

After reading the DOJ report, I think they got pretty fair sentences. Shooting at an unarmed, fleeing suspect is a very, very serious crime.

2007-01-06 02:21:47 AM
Correction. The greatest victory since the Alamo was the silent invasion of the area where I live. We have been occupied for years. At first they lure you with the great taste of their mexican food and then, BAM! Breedin' like epileptic rabbits with the hiccups. The schools and medical centers are flooded with the little buggers at taxpayer expense. Invasion over.

2007-01-06 02:23:59 AM
I had not previously read the DOJ report, only press reports that both officers testified that they saw the illegal with a weapon.

If they didn't, as the DOJ report states, then that is a completely different story.

Thanks for that link, btw.

Yeah man, that's what I meant by that "pre-WWI" statement. I'm glad as hell to see someone else knows about that.

2007-01-06 02:30:42 AM
Mexico wasn't fighting against the USA at the Alamo. They were fighting against Texians and Tejanos. So there ya go.

2007-01-06 03:01:57 AM
I think I've figured out a way to increase the value of the Peso. You have to look at the exports. The drug business is in the billions of dollars. Legalise Drugs, also invest in Mexico.

U.S. drug laws are nothing but a price support subsidy for drug producers (DEA and pals only grab an estimated 10% of the good - same amount every year going back to 1971), how much do we spend every year to prop up their business (cops/prisons)?

The producers just figure the 10% loss as a predictable overhead worth paying. If drugs were actually legalized (legally producing a single dose of Heroin costs six cents, marijuana? who would care anymore?) Mexico's economy would get beaten like a pinata.

Of course the resulting increase in (guess you'd have to start calling them refugees) illegals would simply lead to even more political pandering as creative congressional redistricting would really get nasty. And if the split in congress remains close we'll have candidates from both parties down on their knees swearing that their great-grandmothers sucked on Villa's agave and thought it was muy lindo.

So to sum up, the media is distorting events pro-US by downplaying the post facto conspiracy and including the fradulent gun allegation, and then you are distorting the distorted media coverage to make it even more pro-US by writing:
"2 Border Patrol agents start their 12 year prison sentences this month for returning fire when shot at.

You did not just change the numbers, you changed the reason they were convicted in the first place, from "shot unarmed fleeing suspect in back and covered it up because they thought they could get away with it" to "returned fire when shot at". And you still won't even acknowledge the full extent of your own factual distortions. You are such a tool.

2007-01-06 03:08:06 AM
I'm guessing you don't even think you've done anything wrong, and the next time you get the chance, you'll continue to rail against the great injustice of:

2 Border Patrol agents start their 12 year prison sentences this month for returning fire when shot at.

Don't you see anything horribly wrong taking place here? We are Americans, you know, the ones who don't LIE WHEN IT SUITS THEM.

So we need more workers because the baybyboomers are retiring, and we also need to raise minimum wages because the workers without college/highscool educations are not being paid enough?

Wow, I was lead to believe, that people in the service industry (those without the "booklearnin'" and jobs that can't be out-sourced [you know, building that house, serving that food, taking care of that yard, etc...]), need a raise, and the only way to get them more money is to raise MINIMUM wages.

I wonder what would happen to sevice industry wages, if all the cheap competition were stopped? The "rich" would have to pay more for luxuries? Say it ain't so?

Of course it can't be true, the heroes of the "regular" guy (Dems.), in America, are all for more and more immigration, be it legal or illegal.

/yup the "neo-cons" (Reps.) are for amnesty for illegal immigrants too, but it's just to keep wages down for their corp. friends

I bet they just came over to pickup welfare checks and register to vote Democrat.

2007-01-06 04:44:47 AM
This is why you don't put guys on the border who are not allowed to do anything. When we don't allow our guys to shoot, why would anyone else care they're even there? Just a stupid publicity stunt by our government to say "See we're doing something" but hamstringing our guys putting them at risk.

We should just close the border.

The Texans at the Alamo where able to kill enough Mexican soldiers that General Sam Houston was able to defeat them in a suprise attack at the battle of San Jacinto. Santa Anna was the Gernal of the Mexican army and decided to fight at the Alamo rather than just skip it and go to Houston and win the war. He surrendered at the battle of San Jacinto and a few years later, the Mexican government aknowleged Texas's independence.

Short story, Santa Anna didn't know how to pick his battles.

Another pathetic attempt at derailment of a perfectly valid point by acting and saying something stupid.

What, no night vision? The police at the state facility I used to work at had night vision goggles, which could help I guess esp when the patients are senior citizens with mental issues. If we're worried about security how about spending some money on perimeter security?

The Mexican economy is in the shiatter. I used to work for a place that moved their manufacturing to Mexico. Within 2 years they moved that to China.

NO, they are not all taxpayers. Antho, where do you live or who do you work with that you do not see this? I live in Texas and work construction while in school. I would say AT LEAST 50% of the workers from other trades on some jobs are paid in cash. No taxes; the employer just hands them $300 and that's it. This may not always be the case, but it's what I see everyday. They justify this by saying they pay sales tax. Total horseshiat. Don't get me started on the hospitals and schools issue. I'll just leave it at the fact that my fiancee is a teacher in Texas.

Once again I cannot believe that the US military does not have standing orders to return fire when fired upon.

/It just doesn't makes sense.

Subby can kiss my ass...

The Alamo was an easy win for Mexico, the important thing is we didn't learn anything from it...

Don't disregard request for help from your fellow man.

That's a lesson for all of you.

2007-01-06 10:27:14 AM
Meh. The Mexicans have no problem shooting "their" illegal aliens on sight.

I wouldn't have a problem with Border Patrol doing the same here. After all, when you enter a country illegally, you're invading, and these Mexicans are doing it en masse.

2007-01-06 10:31:38 AM
"Border Patrol" is manned by mostly MEXICANS sympathetic to the "plight" of the illegals.

WTF did we expect? COME ON OVER MEXICO WTF ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Elitist corporate aholes need submissive idiots like you to keep them in power by allowing them to walk all over you, and as we all know, in America they, are the REAL government.

Nope, you're forgetting (as most Americans do) that Pancho Villa held Columbus NM for a while.

I do, too. But the agents didn't say they were shot at.

chuggernaught: Once again I cannot believe that the US military does not have standing orders to return fire when fired upon.

It does, at least in combat zones. This is some weird, half-assed, posse comitatus status that they should have never been placed in.

esteban9: Nope, you're forgetting (as most Americans do) that Pancho Villa held Columbus NM for a while.

A hit-and-run which killed 18 americans, and cost him 80 men. I wouldn't say he held the town. It was a one day affair, and it forced him to spend a year hiding from 6,000-10,000 US forces who hunted for him in Mexico.

He stole horses and guns on that trip, and burned the town. Was it worth it to him? I don't know, but it sounds like he would have been better off if he hadn't done it.

uofwi92: Just what the hell are they doing there, anyways? Playing tiddly-winks?

Dude, you have no idea how stupid the military can be sometimes.

The border is rife with kidnappings, military IDs are in high demand in Mexico, and they stick soldiers out there without hot weapons and orders not to engage.

Absolute bullshiat.

Aside from the issue of their safety, do you know how embarrassing it is to read an article about soldiers having to run away while defending our border?"

Better yet, what about the terrirsts trying to sneak nuclear explosives in through mexico? It would be illegal to even look at them.

I acknowledged that mistake waaaaaay up the thread when it was politely pointed out to me by Sum Dum Gai.

You continue to attack me for that, so I guess you are the one deliberately distorting facts.

I still don't think they should do jail time.

If you read the DOJ report I linked earlier, both the suspects testified that they did not see any weapon (i.e. that they believed the suspect was unarmed when they shot at him).

I am pretty certain that deserves jail time.

Sum Dum Gai: I am pretty certain that deserves jail time.

Illegal aliens running drugs into Texas don't get a lot of sypathy from me. If you do that, and you get stopped, you best stop. Run, get shot, and expect the border patrol to go to jail while you get off free and clear? Fark that.

Like I said, I don't think they deserve jailtime.
