TFA: "The troops, who are not allowed to apprehend illegal border crossers"

Just what the hell are they doing there, anyways? Playing tiddly-winks?

$10 says the NG didn't have ammo.

Plus, they'd get crucified for defending themselves:

2 Border Patrol agents start their 12 year prison sentences this month for returning fire when shot at.

2007-01-05 11:06:59 PM
Also TFA: "Since arriving in mid-June, the Guard has assisted the Border Patrol by manning control rooms, repairing roads, fences and vehicles, and spotting and reporting illegal border crossings to the Border Patrol."

OK, that's great. Are they at least allowed to return fire when heavily armed drug smugglers open up on them? Or, like the marine sentries at the Marine barracks in Lebanon in 1983, do they have empty clips in their weapons?

/style over substance

I don't like it either, but I'm becoming more convinced that the way to end illegal immigration from Mexico is to invest big-time in Mexico's economy. Inject capital, rev that sucker up and let it crank out some decent jobs. Our two countries' economies are going to eventually seek out equilibrium, and I'd rather see them brought up than us brought down.

I may be right, I may be wrong, but one thing is for sure. No fence, wall, or threat of punishment is going to deter people for any sustained time. Much like the War on (Some) Drugs has already proven, when there's big money to be made people will take the risk.

NEWS UPDATE:

Illegal Mexican aliens involved in the incident were tracked down by a psychic recruited by the local police force. Apprently the perpetrators fled on bicycles and hid in Alamos' basement.

so, an armed force can cross our border and attack our military and the best we can do is run away?

whoever ordered soldiers to retreat needs to be demoted. if they were ordered to the post without weapons and ammo in the first place, their commander needs to be demoted.

mrmagnet: Investing big-time in Mexico's economy is happening. Propping it up, even. I'd like to know what you had in mind?

1. Define big-time.
2. Multiply that by 100.

It's just my pipe dream though. In reality we'll spend much more than that for several more decades on ever-escalating punishment solutions that will never be more than marginally effective at best.

Yeah, geez. What we really need to do is put the patriotic, security-minded Republicans in complete control of Congress and the White House for six years. They'll be a force for change!

BigJake: We are investing in their economy by building factories that unemploy Americans and then letting their poor move here to unemploy yet more Americans. What more can we do?

The reason those factories "unemploy" Americans is because Mexico's economy is so far into the sh*tter that their workers are practically free by comparison. Conversely, the reason so many come to America illegally is because the money they make here is worth a fortune back there.

If you want to stop the jobs from leaving and the illegals from coming, you have to reduce the disparity between the two economies - preferably by increasing theirs. That removes the cheap labor incentive from American companies and it removes the incentive from migrants who suddenly find it's not worth their while anymore because the dollar buys much less back home than it used to (and there are better jobs at home anyway).

Man you aren't kidding about being a wingnut. Here, let me change that headline for you:

2 Border Patrol Agents Begin 10-20 year sentences for attempting to kill an unarmed suspect while he was fleeing and then cover it by collecting their shell casings and failing to mention it in police report.

And this is from the article in defense of these guys.

BigJake has a point. Don't try to dismiss his point by mantling it in a veneer of racism, because thats a flimsy ad-hominem at best.

Curiously, however, BigJake's economics are also incorrect. The issue is about comparative advantage in different fields. By building factories in Mexico, Americans might lessen the flow of illegal immigrants, but at the same time their jobs will move to Mexico, where the labor is cheaper. So the only real solution to the problem is to specialize in areas in which Mexico performs poorly.

2007-01-05 11:32:00 PM
We need to stop playing around, and call Mexico on this. Attacks on our people from their people should be recognized as an act of war. If they don't get this under control from their side, WE SHOULD. Call your representatives. Tell them you're mad as hell, and not going to take it anymore.

Today, they're shooting at the National Guard. Tomorrow, it could be us.

2007-01-05 11:32:44 PM

uofwi92: Just what the hell are they doing there, anyways? Playing tiddly-winks?

Dude, you have no idea how stupid the military can be sometimes.

The border is rife with kidnappings, military IDs are in high demand in Mexico, and they stick soldiers out there without hot weapons and orders not to engage.

Absolute bullshiat.

Aside from the issue of their safety, do you know how embarrassing it is to read an article about soldiers having to run away while defending our border?

2007-01-05 11:34:31 PM
Antho: the article does not say he was unarmed.

I'd collect casings too when you have dumbass Rules Of Engagement like that.

To be fair, neither party cares much about cracking down on illegal immigration.

A crackdown does need to be done but at the same time we need to open up a lot more legal immigration, too. I'd propose to tie immigration to the economy and the labor force, as well. So much of the problems with things like social security, etc. is that the labor force is shrinking as the baby boomers retire. This is a bad situation for business in general, and at the same time we're feeling the pain of a reduced labor force, we continue to turn away tens of millions every year who want to come here and work.

We really need a program to allow more temporary/permanent immigration, and target it specifically towards young adults. Rather than a fixed yearly quota, the quota is reevaluated every year based on economic need -- so the program could issue no greencards/visas one year if the economy can't support more workers, but if there is a worker shortage, the number allowed in would be high.

This would also allow more young adults to take this path in, and leave more of the other visa/greencard programs for the older individuals.
