"It feels like a mix between fire and electricity," swimmer Chris Houser said. "(It is) like it is burning at the same time you are being electronically shocked. It is a lot of discomfort and very painful. And it lasts."

Not that I've ever been electronically shocked before, you understand. Tasered half a dozen times, yes - but never electronically shocked.

Anyone see the mythbusters where they tested out vodka as a possible form of first aid for a jellyfish sting? They used some pansy pacific jellyfish.

Can someone who has had a Biology class more recently than I have, or better memory clear something up for me please? It seems like I remember hearing somewhere that the Man-o-War is actually not one animal, but a bunch of different critters that combine to make the nasty stinging jellything; Kind of like a non-rigid, gooey, unpleasant, sea-nasty Voltron.

mgbeach Thanks, thats an interesting read.

Ultimate_loser I saw them in concert not long ago, sadly they're still together. After having the epic metal gods Rhapsody open for them, they were a big disappointment, and they were assholes.

/Got to hang out with the members of Rhapsody. They were very friendly folks, and happy that we liked them.

People still go and see bands like that? I thought you all died in the "Great White" club fire a couple years ago.

Considering that they get almost zero publicity here in the US, they drew quite a crowd. I was actually really surprised, and honestly, I think they were too. They literally had that "wow I can't believe all these people came to see us" attitude. I think most of the audence left less than halfway thru manowar's set. All they did was biatch at the sound man and complain like old men if one of 'em broke a guitar string. Rhapsody was really teh class act, though.

Those are the et-cong man-o-wars!

2007-01-05 01:05:58 PM
The chief of lifeguards at Cocoa Beach, Fla., said the recent warm-up and offshore winds have brough the Portuguese man-o-war closer to the beachline and near swimmers.

At least they called in a specialist to explain.

Swimmers in Central Florida are being warned after a series of Portuguese man-o-war stings in recent days.

Is all of FLA under water now? How else could you swim in the central part of the state?

/Damn TV news writers

I spent a night in the emergency room from being stung by a man-o-war. I was surfing and was hit in a sensitive location. It wasn't the fire like pain so much as the swelling of my nads that was discomfoting.

/never went surfing since
//missed two days of work
///got great drugs
////felt like slashing

Yeah, some of us didn't like Great White :P
I'm more of a Iron Maiden/Nightwish/Rhapsody kind of guy, though I often dabble in the classics - Rush, Deep Purple, and such. I'm not afraid to admit I still enjoy the occasional Dio or Ratt, though.

2007-01-05 01:19:25 PM
I got stung by one of these Sydney when I was nine. One tentacle wrapped around my waist and another around by left arm. I have never experienced pain quite like that. The description is actually quite accurate -- it's feels like a burning electrical shock from dozens of points simultaneously. The welts took six weeks to heal.

2007-01-05 01:20:45 PM
El robbo, central florida doesnt mean in the center of the state from left to right, they mean central as in middle part of the wang, from like tampabay to cape canaveral.

/grew up in FL, blame the spelling and grammar on that

FTFA - The Portuguese man-o-war problem should continue through the weekend.

The stupid people going into the ocean when man-o-wars be chilling in it problem will continue through the weekend.

Seriously, why would you go out in that water while man-o-wars are all in ur oceanz...

I say throw more man-o-wars out there. Eugenics ftw!

2007-01-05 01:35:39 PM
I got stung by one of these things before (or something like it, I never saw it). I had to go to the hospital. After the original pain from the sting, I felt sick to my stomach to the point where I could hardly walk. Had to soak my hands in vinegar for a few days, and left some nasty looking veins for a month or two. Not to be messed with.

When we drive down the beach on Padre Island, TX, they pop like little balloons.

Got hit off the coaast of texas while wade fishing. How you can miss a big blue bubble floating in your general direction until it gets right up next to you is beyond me...

Yes, they hurt. It was 15 years ago and I still have some scarring.

Dont mess with them when they are on the beach either. The pneumatocysts can still fire for a good long while after being pretty high and dry.

oof, that biatch got me good.
