I like the way there was all that trash "staged" around the house that he was speaking in front of....

Or was it there be 4 the flood?

Still too early to tell if populism is going to have the right resonance to carry him through the primaries. He may have a good formula though because a lot of economists are seeing indications of a new economic downturn just on the horizon.

2006-12-28 11:18:21 AM
Right, populism could never when a that office...

/It's morning again in America.

I don't buy that Katrina thing one bit. People helped w/ Katrina because people experienced a natural disaster, not because people refused to get off their ass & go work at McD's.

2006-12-28 11:30:30 AM
He should just send his campain money to me and I'll invest it for him.

Then he won't be poor any more, and he can stop going to the soup kitchen.

Fighting poverty takes a lot more than just giving poor people money or jobs. It takes education, it takes family counseling, prison reform, etc...

Here is a challenge for you... try putting describing what is needed to fight poverty into 30-60 second statement. Of course it is ridiculous to try to even sum up a solution to such a complex problem in such a short time span... but that is all the time that a politician has to make a statement in today's media.

2006-12-28 11:40:50 AM
Wow, I bet that doesn't backfire on him at all.

2006-12-28 11:42:29 AM
I'm not a fan of Edwards, but at least someone is going to talk about poverty instead of endlessly fellating "middle class families."

Voters don't care about poor people

Sorry...

Saw this on local news this morning. He's down there working with his hands. More than can be said for lots of politicians.

/approval rises.

2006-12-28 12:34:10 PM
Universal Healthcare is an extremely popular idea.

Not that any of the righties care.

2006-12-28 12:35:04 PM
Well if the attack machine is already rolling he must be doing something right.

2006-12-28 12:35:11 PM
imo appeals to altruism don't work politically

2006-12-28 12:35:16 PM
Yeah, fark those poor people. Edwards should be parroting the GOP talking points - that poor people are lazy and brought it on themselves, and that we need to INCREASE poverty because by kicking people when they're down, we motivate them and others to work harder. Suck it, libs!

2006-12-28 12:35:29 PM
Also, he gets mad props for doing work in St. Bernard Parish. Places other than New Orleans were devestated, but not many people really care (places filled with just as many impoverished people).

2006-12-28 12:36:00 PM
Great. Tax the wealthy simply because they have money.

Throw a party for Castro, why don't you, ya pseudo-limey.

2006-12-28 12:36:50 PM
albo: hit on the place where poor people get to buy stuff and save money

yes, and buying stuff there just makes them poorer and have less money.

2006-12-28 12:37:11 PM
Great headline smitty, thanks!!111!

/he's trial lawyer what do you expect?
//at least he didn't announce it on teh Daily Show like last time.

2006-12-28 12:37:24 PM
I remember DIA being less of a troll before November '06.

Wha' happen?

Voterspoliticians don't care about poor people

there. all fixed.

2006-12-28 12:37:33 PM
Wow, ltos of douchy anti-Edwards subbies out there.

At least the fact that Republicans don;t care about poverty is coming out in the open again. It's not Christian to fight poverty. If only poverty were gay and monogamous.

2006-12-28 12:37:35 PM
albo: i hope he goes all out demonizing wal-mart, like he did in pittsburgh this summer.

Don't you mean demonizing the idea that if people are paid less, then somehow they'll be richer?

2006-12-28 12:37:41 PM
Didn't we already HAVE a 'war on poverty'? And we all know how well the Great Society crap turned out - so why in the hell is the Democratic party going back to the failed policies of some 50 odd years ago?

I don't want some jackass to revive the failed neo-socialist policies of the distant past. I want someone who's going to LOWER TAXES, cut government regulation and finally come up with a coherent Iraq policy (and stick to it).

2006-12-28 12:38:27 PM
Weaver95: I want someone who's going to LOWER TAXES

So in other words, you don't want Reagan or Bush I.

2006-12-28 12:38:55 PM
Not exactly Robin Hood-like.

Robin Hood returned the tax money to those that had paid it. John Edwards, like most politicians, wants to steal from one person and give it to the other person.

It's not Democrat vs Republican. It's government vs the people.

Hell, if he can talk to dead people, he can run the country.

Edwards scares the shiat out of the GOP dickheads.

lets drive Wal mart out of business, and see what happens to their employees!

2006-12-28 12:40:04 PM
So a class action lawsuit lawyer is saying we need to help the poor and he can say that with a straight face?

2006-12-28 12:40:40 PM
It's amazing. WHATEVER the democrats do, someone is right there to stand up and say, "Wow, THANKS! You just TOTALLY ensured your own destruction! Be sure NOT to do that thing!
And by the way, Brer Fox, don't throw me in that briar patch!"

The fact that this appears to be the most static they can throw up is really telling.

2006-12-28 12:41:18 PM
Well if the attack machine is already rolling he must be doing something right.

The attack machines or either party never stopped rolling. They were just waiting and observing. All the dirt on potential candidates has already been collected. The only thing left to do now is figure out the release timing and deliver the scripts to the talking heads.

2006-12-28 12:41:18 PM
There are 3 kinds of people

Those who work
Those who can't work
Those who won't work.

Not a single penny of my money should go to the 3rd group.

2006-12-28 12:41:20 PM
...and one million new housing vouchers for working families, to help them find homes in neighborhoods with better schools.

That kinda sounds like the Republican "school voucher" idea. Could Edwards and the GOP possibly have some similar ideas?!?

2006-12-28 12:41:44 PM
That dope!

We don't have time to spend millions on fighting poverty!

We're too busy spending BILLIONS on fighting Iraqis!

i think there should be an inverse tax scheme. the poorer you are the higher percentage tax you should have to pay! because if high taxes against the wealthy are a motivating factor against building wealth, then high taxes against poverty ought to be a motivating factor against poverty!

2006-12-28 12:42:28 PM
This is actually the only Democrat I would vote for. I am pretty Conservative, but I think this guy has his head on straight.

2006-12-28 12:42:37 PM
I wouldn't mind seeing some aspects of the New Deal put back in place. The direction we have been in going in over the last 20 years or so has not made it better for the majority of people living here. I'd like to see what the other candidates have to say, but I like where John Edwards is standing.

The little attacks that are already rolling are pretty stupid. DIA has been pissy since his party got its ass handed to it in November. Remember though, he's not a republican, he's an independent-libertarian, or some such thing.

2006-12-28 12:43:02 PM
Um Yeah
Universal Healthcare is an extremely popular idea.
Not that any of the righties care.

That's possibly the dumbest thing I've ever read on this site.

/maybe not
//but close

2006-12-28 12:43:27 PM
poverty??? In the United States? No Such Thing!

The Americans who have the very least amount of money have indoor plumbing with hot AND cold running water, color TVs, automobiles, and McDonalds. You will be hard pressed to find any poverty in the USA.

2006-12-28 12:44:08 PM
You mean he's going to steal money from the government and give it back to the people originally earned it. Awesome

Oh, wait, that's not what he means...

2006-12-28 12:44:14 PM
veedeevadeevoodee, I'll see your pic of two democrats standing closely (but not touching as the shadow shows) and raise you two republicans holding hands:
