1) The scary part is my friends and I were just discussing this yesterday.

2) Perfect idea! We'll send a bunch of Mexicans to Iraq. They will offer peace and goodwill... and burritos, tequilla, and some spicy nachos.

Old and busted: Terrorists taking flying lessons from small flight schools.

New hotness: Terrorists joining the Armed Forces for training and getting behind the controls of a fighter jet.

That is nothing new. Used to give immigrants land grants out west if they would fight for the Union during the War betwixt the States.

Denison, your name bears an uncomfortable resemblance to mine.

Everyone already said what I was going to say (Pax Romana! It's a great idea) so I'll just add this: why the scary tag? Obvious, Cool, or even Interesting trump Scary on this one.

This is one of those things the military has done for years but the media didn't know about it because none of them ever were in the military.

it's good to have a large contingent of foreigners in your army, they're helpfull when you need to freedomize your own citizenry since they are less inclined to identify with the civilians. give them one of those microwave weapons and you have a perfectly ruthless crowd control symbiosis.

2006-12-26 11:40:55 PM
I don't see a problem with this as long as there is some screening involved. In fact, seems like a good idea, and not even a new one at that.

New Immigration Plan.

Recruiters on the borders.

Hey Pedro!

Immigrants: Hold out until they offer 40 acres and a mule.

2006-12-26 11:43:59 PM
I'd join the army/navy/airforce as long as I get to wear my t-shirt and jeans/sweatpants instead of the uniforms/suits etc. I think it might sound unbelievable, but that's what preventing me from joining the military - the same thing that'll prevent me from getting any decent job after I graduate (comp. science major). It's going to be a tough life.

DayBreakBoy - I see what you did there.

/Clear the way!

2006-12-26 11:45:11 PM
Oh sheeyat, Rome did this with the Visigoths and Ostigoths
then eventually crumble crumble.

2006-12-26 11:45:33 PM
Why not? The military has been enlisting non-citizens for years now. Frankly I would rather have an educated non-national standing next to me in a fire fight rather than a borderline retarded US citizen any day.

2006-12-26 11:45:45 PM
Not news. I get calls from the marines (Canadian living in US) and when told I wasn't a US citizen, sorry, I was told, "We can fix that."

2006-12-26 11:46:25 PM
"Currently, Pentagon policy stipulates that only immigrants legally residing in the United States are eligible to enlist. There are currently about 30,000 noncitizens who serve in the US armed forces, making up about 2 percent of the active-duty force, according to statistics from the military and the Council on Foreign Relations."

So, why is this story labeled "scary"?

2006-12-26 11:47:21 PM
Haven't they been doing this for awhile now? I heard a Lot of Phillipino's are in the military because of this.

2006-12-26 11:47:26 PM

I graduated CS last May. I go to work in jeans and a nicer shirt everyday. I would highly suggest finding a work environment that works for you, even if it means forgoing a higher salary. You'll be happier for it. And decent paying jobs with employers who understand programmers do exist.

2006-12-26 11:47:37 PM
What? The supply of teenagers in WVA who have no hope of getting a local job has run out?

It used to be that you could tell these dupes that book larning was a communist plot and going to college would expose them to socialists who would sic the devil on them and drain their souls dry.

Joining the Army was the only recourse. Are some now thinking that army education benefits are not too good if you wind up dead?

2006-12-26 11:47:48 PM
Madheretic

grow the fark up you idiot.

2006-12-26 11:48:03 PM
Some within the Army privately express concern that a big push to recruit noncitizens would smack of "the decline of the American empire," as one Army official who asked not to be identified put it.

American Empire... Maybe that is the problem. Empires never win.

Just look at Star Wars... or Star Trek... yeah... Federations are definitely the way to go...

First things first: let's outsource the jobs of every seat in the house and senate.

2006-12-26 11:49:20 PM
I have served with people from many nationality's and I have never had a problem with it. It also is a good thing to see them get their citizenship.

2006-12-26 11:49:39 PM
Of course, if they're really concerned about their numbers they could probably look into FIRST changing a certain dumbass rule they have on their books.

Is getting shot up in some godforsaken foreign country in pursuit of a mission no one understands now another one of those "jobs Americans won't do?"

Or are Americans just getting to smart to be used?
