Call me crazy, but shouldn't the best hot rods of 2006 actually be 2006 models?

Otherwise, there's no reason the same cars can't be on the same list, in the same order, next year.

stonner: shouldn't the best hot rods of 2006 actually be 2006 models?

The whole Hot Rod thing is getting to be mostly nostalgia. There's a good reason the new Mustang looks like the 1969 Mustang.

2006-12-24 09:54:40 AM
Maybe so, but then why not put the 2006 Mustang on the list?

I'm not a Mustang guy, but I understand they view it as a wannabe.

I would murder babies for that Nova.

LOVE that bus! Gaddammmm that's cool!

2006-12-24 11:44:03 AM
Is the bus actually chopped? Or do they have those teeny tiny short windows originally?

Why do VW buses go and live in the mountains where they can't even begin to make it up one side before freefalling down the other?

2006-12-24 11:45:30 AM
Personally, I'd rather have this bus...

Everytime some ass flips me off or cuts me off driving my VW, I wish I could do this to it. That is probably so fun to drive.

Are you guys really that damn stupid?

These Hot Rods were built or at least shown for the first time this year, but more specifically, they were presented in Hot Rod magazine this year, so its really a top 10 of hot rods from there magazine.

2006-12-24 11:48:38 AM
I may be confused but shouldn't the headline read includes not inclused?

Amy Wong: This speedometer only goes up to 80. This machine can only go as fast as 80,000 miles an hour?
Fry: Nope. But it has a driver's side floor and an eight-track with genuine mono sound.
Professor Hubert Farnsworth: But where's the device to speed up or slow the passage of time?
Fry: [Pulls out a bong] Under the seat.

Last one in the list. Oh my goodness, I think I want to marry it.

I remember Hot Rod Magazine as being written for 12-year-olds. I see nothing has changed.

Shouldn't this list be "Top ten vehicles for guys with little penii"

stonner: Call me crazy,

You're crazy.

but shouldn't the best hot rods of 2006 actually be 2006 models?

No, because then it'd be the best new cars of 2006 list. A brand new car could be a hot rod, but most hot rods are old cars. This list is made up of cars that were featured in Hot Rod Magazine this year. "New" hot rods are built all the time. Just now, someone is probably dragging a decrepit Model A Ford or tri-5 Chevy or muscle car out of a field or some old hag's barn, already thinking of what kind of engine and transmission he's gonna drop in it, what color he'll paint it, what kind of wheels and tires it'll have...

And yes, I'd also commit some kind of atrocity to have that sleeper Nova.

2006-12-24 12:01:30 PM
aerodynamics anyone?

ok so that bus is farking cool, but they really musta messed with it to stop it rolling!

hot rods are great and all, but why stick a huge engine in something if you are going to utterly neglect the drag on it? is it really just the retro-cool side of things?

/its all about bikes anyway *cough*

That so called 1965 Pontiac GTO is an absolute mess

2006-12-24 12:06:05 PM
i heartily agree with PIP_the_TROLL, I totally dig that Holden. Too bad most Holdens don't see the light of day in the US. I say most only because of the GTO/Monaro.

Is the bus actually chopped? Or do they have those teeny tiny short windows originally?

Yes, the bus is chopped. It looks as if the roof has been lowere about five inches.

I think it would have been more interesting with a well-built VW engine, possibly something in the 2.4-liter twin-turbo area. I should probably say "VW style" engine, as in an air-cooled flat-four: the high-performance VW engines share few to no parts with stock engines.

Years ago I had a Super Beetle with a very nice 1835cc engine. w00t.

"Lowered", even. D'oh.

2006-12-24 12:16:03 PM
The Holden is awesome. The GTO is a travesty.

The '25 Dodge Underslung is perfect. Wow.

I would gladly trade megapaw's soul for that Holden

Because anyone who appreciates or is talented in an art form you can't comprehend must have a little peenor... Makes loads of sense.

Aerodynamics only really become important with sustained speeds over ~45 mph. Below that, rolling resistance is the largest efficiency sapper. Most of these things aren't gonna see daily driver use on the commuter circuit.

Right, and don't this m.f.s go a bit over 45 mph?

Englebert Slaptyback: Years ago I had a Super Beetle with a very nice 1835cc engine. w00t.

That's what I'm trying to put together now. A mid-'70s Super with a biiiig engine (by VW standards, anyway), a lower stance and wider tires.

VW Buses were not hippie vehicles, this is a stereotype perpetuated by the uniformed.

The majority of people in the 60s that we would be considered hippies drove American cars.

Perpetuated by who? The police? The Marines? UPS? McDonald's employees?

This bus sticks to a 'purer' air cooled theme (German, but there are pics.)

That's a shame. Split window busses are hard to come by.

ISeeyourDisease:

Um, If I remember correctly [or at all], VW Buses surely were used by many hippies and those who either lived in communes or followed the various groups around the country. Many in Northern California and the Desert Southwest but not so much in the South or Midwest. Many tended to be painted by hand and it was amazing to see 15 or so folks piling out of one at a concert.

Yes, I was there, I have the $6.00 Rolling Stones tickets to show for it.

2wheeljunkie: That's a shame. Split window busses are hard to come by.

They're all in England and Holland. I'm not kidding, ever since the dollar tanked a chap down in Kent has been filling crates with 'dub buses and parts, mostly sourced in CA, as fast as he can find them.

I like the little Dodge roadster & the "beater" Chebbie II.
Thanks for the movie link flyinEyeball. That was a hoot!

Mine had 044 heads, dual Weber 48IDAs w/ velocity stacks, an Engle 120 cam, and Empi-style 8-spoke wheels with 50 series tires. The front end was lowered about 3 inches, and of course the tires dropped the whole car a bit. As a combination it all worked pretty darn well.

Good luck with the project!

Hippies, by definition, are never in a hurry. Still, great headline, smitty!

I don't know, VW was big. They were dirt cheap. My older cousin was part of the counter-culture and she had a bug. Yes, complete with large, wild, painted flowers.

2006-12-24 01:40:12 PM
Theres only one hotrod on that list. Just so you will know, they quit making old cars in 1948. After 1948 cars are modern.

2006-12-24 01:41:36 PM
The Australian made Holden is NOT a hotrod, it is a custom.

Hippies in a hurry? Talk about a limited demographic.

heath1444: Hippies in a hurry? Talk about a limited demographic.

I heard the small block needs 5 quarts of 20W-50 patchouli oil too. Like a hippie could afford 5 quarts of patchouli oil.

Our 1956 VW Panel Bus moves along quite nicely with it's stock 36hp 1200cc. And, unlike most 50s American cars, it's still on the road.

/ top speed 55mph
// suck it Detroit
/// hippies can suck it too

2006-12-24 01:58:43 PM
This reminds mind of this crazy hippy chick that my friend brought over to our house.

She said that her car broke down on the way to a commune in France. She and her mom sang songs and told it that they loved it, and it started running again.

I know that sounds like some stereotypical bullshiat, but I swear I'm not making it up.

There's a gay bar downtown called Hot Rods.

2006-12-24 02:34:04 PM
I bet that bus is a biatch to drive. If you've never driven one, it's pretty funky because you're sitting on top of the front axle, and it's real tempting to turn too early.
