Because when I think pawn shop, I think of only the highest quality, legitimate goods. At least, that's what pawn shop owners are always complaining about on L&O.

Matching the shell casings isn't as accurate as matching the actual bullet. It might me able to match it to the make/model, but you'd need an actual bullet to match it to that individual gun.

Actually it's pretty much the other way around. In most cases the bullet is too deformed from impact to match it up to much.

Heck, there are some guns where the 'experts' can't match up individual bullets, even if the rounds are all from the same lot and fired sequentially into a soft medium.

That's the problem with the ballistics database Canada and two US states tried to impliment. The moment you get a couple thousand guns in the system you start getting dozens of matches everytime you try to match a case.

The end result was the system actually ended up harming them in cases because it was too many leads to track down and the gun still might not even be in the system.

Oh, and it tended to give the defense attorney's ammo because they could go 'So the system pulled up 2 dozen guns. How can they be so sure that it was my client's gun that fired those shots?'

in my area, it's 500-1500 on a stereo (/w organ liquifying bass), and about two grand on spinners/hydraulics.
