Actually, a lot of people think that if Titanic had just rammed the iceberg, it probably wouldn't have sank. Would have really screwed up the bow, and killed anyone near the front of the ship, but it wouldn't have sank. It was the trying to turn to late that actually caused the sinking. So... that analogy probably means the exact opposite of what you think it means.

The thinking is that only 1 or 2 of the ships watertight compartments would have been breached, which the ship could take without sinking. By allowing the iceberg to hit along the side of the ship, they allowed it perforate 5 of the compartments, dooming the ship.
