I hate to threadjack, but I admit I'm stupid on this point.

Someone once told me Hanukkah isn't all that big of a deal. It's only the media that's pushed it up to the big event of the year for Jewish people we keep hearing about.
Is this true? And if so, what is the "biggie" for Jewish people.

/sorry

Heroic Poser: Someone once told me Hanukkah isn't all that big of a deal. It's only the media that's pushed it up to the big event of the year for Jewish people we keep hearing about.

Yup, it's true. It's a minor Holiday and Rabbinic in origin (the other being Purim).

I think the phenomenon of Hannukah, in the US especially, is "Christmas-envy" for a lot of secular or partly religious Jews...

I find it always so ironic that this holiday is most popular with secular Jews, yet the story of Hannukah is the story of Haredi, Yeshiva bochurim fighting against Hellenized Jews and Greek troops to remove foreign influences from Israel and rededicate the Temple and the Jewish People to the service of G-d.

A good part of the people who celebrate Hannukah today would have been fighting against the Maccabees

Is this true? And if so, what is the "biggie" for Jewish people.

The most important (and observed) holiday is Yom Kippur when even most secular Jews actually go to Synagogue. In Israel, there's virtually no cars on the road and no one eating

I've always wondered why more Jews celebrate Christmas than Christians celebrating Hanukkah. Odd.

Tatsuma: Well, duh. We use Christmas as an excuse to go eat (kosher) chinese food

I work as a delivery driver for a Chinese restaurant, and have worked on Christmas before. In fact, I seem to remember delivering to a hotel room, and noticing a Star of David on a gold chain around this woman neck.

/Ancedotal evidence! Yay!
//In my best Zoidberg voice, of course.

bigpeeler: I've always wondered why more Jews celebrate Christmas than Christians celebrating Hanukkah. Odd.

Because Christmas has become less and less about religion and more and more an excuse to buy shiat.

In NYC on Xmas eve you got Matsiyahu and an Australian Jewish punk band playing plus opening acts (for free for most college age Jewish people who sign up for event lists), a huge Jdate bash going on, in Brooklyn you got another concert, and I'm pretty sure there are at least 4 other clubs/lounges rented out by Jewish promoters/youth outreach/(receivers of Bronfman grants :P) organizations doing various parties downtown.

For me though, Xmas eve is about collecting Jewish friends and getting completely smashed while snowboarding.

As I'm bored, check out this online game of Risk I've been playing Last Knights dot com. It's a really fun time waster.

Christmas was a minor holiday too. Never let your religion get in the way of a good paty.

The article gets kinda funny if you read it to the end. I snickered a little at the "Matso Ball" and then the Rabbi Shwartz and his Chabad Chai's Kosher Casino party.
Then came Rob Tannenbaum from the musicle comedy act "Good for the Jews", with "Most Jewish traditions involve fasting, and that's no fun," says the cheeky Tannenbaum. "The new traditions involve some element of music, comedy, and sometimes even alcohol."
I don't know why but by this time i was wondering if the Boston Globe had hired a columnist from The Onion.
By the time i got to the last paragragh i couldn't stop from reading the quotes from Molly Harris in a Fran Dresser voice.

lobobco: Yom Kippur is just after the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah. It usually happens in late September/early October.

This year it was Oct 2.

I wonder if they do that in other parts of the country. I am not religious at all but it would be a fine thing to meet a pretty lady on that evening.

Post like this keep perpetuating the notion that Sarah Silverman is hot. It needs to stop.

Sarah's sense of humor brings her from a 6 to an 8.7

I would hit it every night of Hanuakah!

For the religious, Chanukah is a minor holiday, but for many Jews, it's one of the major ones. I don't really buy the "well, it's the same time of year as Xmas" argument. On Chanukah we rid Israel of the Assyrian conquerors and once again had a functioning nation. Since the founding of the modern State of Israel, there's some obvious relevant symbolism. Sure, if you want to downplay the miraculous military victories and play up the miraculous oil, it belongs in the minor holiday camp. I don't, and it doesn't.

I beg to differ. No, not even that. I differ. She is hot; and the personality to match. I'd convert for it! BTW her hair (wig?) is really terrible in that particular photo.

What was this thread about again? Oh um, right. Jewish singles on Xmas Eve. Can I have one of those Dec. 24, female please. Oh who am I kidding, I'm a booze soaked Catholic with no money.

Anyone who supports Israel supports the neo-con agenda.

That statement could not be more false. The neo-cons may support Isreal for their own "rapture" second coming reasons.

Most Jews I know, myself included, can not stand the Neo-cons or anyone else in Bush's inner circle.

When you look at the prominent neo-cons here in america, most of them are the jew and some christians. Jesus teaches us that the sanhedrin is bad news.

Everyone knows Jesus,
The guy who healed the lame.
Well, I am Jesus' brother,
Craig is my name.
Jesus is the Prince of Peace.
Jesus is the Lamb.
Jesus is the Son of God,
But Craig don't give a damn.
Because when Craig's in sight,
We'll party all damn night.
I don't turn water into wine,
But into cold Coors Light.
I'm not my brother, I know,
Don't walk on H2O,
But I got hydroponic sh*t that me and Judas grow.

Do you even know what the Sanhedrin is?

No Such Agency

Just to clarify UFIA is only when "Unsolicited?"

Keep the pics a coming!

2006-12-21 08:17:15 AM
The sanhedrin was the jewish council. It's equivalent is the government of israel today.
