Too bad it wasn't 100% fatal.

Fresh clean gene pool? So because people are too poor to afford heat any other way because Social Security or their minimum wage paying jobs aren't enough to cover basic expenses they deserve to die and ought to be eliminated for the betterment of the species?

Whatever.

Dumbasses...they should have just frozen.

Well if you had LISTENED to the man, and used a grill appropriate for indoors use, you'd be fine!

Said the same thing when I heard it on the news.

I would imagine the type of people who poisoned themselves probably weren't poor, especially if they were running a generator, and because their lack of heat had little to nothing to do with their income. I think you jumped to quite a conclusion there.

I hesitate to say it(because it's going to "put a hex on the whole damn thing") but where exactly are the storms for the Northeast? We have had one dusting of snow so far. Driving to work has been a pleasure. Here's to hoping it stays that way.

2006-12-18 09:05:26 AM
We just had a massive winter storm in this area and a million people are without power in the Seattle area and over on the east side of the state, it's even colder. Guess what, most of the people that are doing this are poor and uneducated about grills, grills, and generators; most of them don't even know what carbon monoxide is.

It's not a cleaning of the gene pool, it's a farkin tragedy.

/Still doesn't explain my Art teacher trying to sell hot dogs with a coal burner in an furniture store.

2006-12-18 09:06:12 AM
So because people are too poor to afford heat any other way...

People are doing things like this because of a big power outage in the Northwest has left them without the normal ways of heating their homes.

TROLL scores 1/10

The power outage made people try to heat with unadvisable sources. NOT being poor.

What do you mean by 'gas heater'? If you mean your natural gas furnance, then it can, but hopefully the combustion products are being properly vented and not leaking into your home.

2006-12-18 09:10:40 AM
The central american immigrants around me do this often. The newbs don't know not to use charcoal indoors.

why didn't those dummies just burn their money to stay warm like I do?

2006-12-18 09:17:47 AM
This is pretty stupid. You'd think people would have some sort of fundamental common sense to know not to burn things indoors - like if our caveman ancestors knew enough not to do it, you'd think it would be almost instinctively passed down.

"You can almost smell the fresh, clean, gene pool."

Yeah, I kinda agree there. I'm sorry people have to die, but that's the problem when anyone, no matter how stupid, can breed. You need a license to drive. You should need a license to breed.

2006-12-18 09:18:12 AM
When are these moron utilities in the tree-rich parts of America going to begin burying their electric lines? I can see why it doesn't make sense to bury high-voltage transmission lines, but the little feeders from sub-station to end-user? Why not?

And if they're not bright enough to vent the exhaust properly, perhaps they should breed in the near future.

Well, they are not only poor, but stupid I guess.

How does being poor or not have anything to do with being stupid about combustables and their ability to poison you??

We were dirt poor when I was a kid (no generator), but we sure as hell knew better than to run a gas motor or burn ANYTHING inside an improperly ventilated area>

FWIW, growing up in upstate NY in a less than wealthy area, I didn't know anyone either who had a generator. Winter brought ice storms that could take out lines for weeks. I think most people were more concerned about ensuring a tree/pole/power line didn't fall on their house, or that there was enough food to make it until things turned around.

A couple of years ago, just before New Years, my gas burner died on me. And with the rest of the building being mostly abandoned and it being freezing every single farking day, the 200+ candles (the heating kind) made little difference.

Solution: Igniting all 4 gas plates!
Problem: After a few hours the head starts to spin.

Seriously, only solution for several days before I could get anyone to come and fix it was to run the plates for about an hour, then open all the windows for a while, then it'd be ok for a couple of hours (w/ candles). Then rinse and repeat.

Man, the mornings were cold though...

2006-12-18 09:31:12 AM
I could see trying something like burning charcoal in my house if I was really cold and didn't know better. I know better now, but that wasn't the case all my life. Ignorance isn't the same thing as stupidity.

2006-12-18 09:37:11 AM
I tried a charcoal-powered generator once, but gave up because it took all the output just to run the vent fan.

2006-12-18 09:37:52 AM
Happens every year to people at the Houston Rodeo.

I just installed a "vent free" gas fireplace in my home. What could possibly go wrong?

Four beautiful letters:

RTFM

Asshole. You know those pieces of paper with the words on them? Yeah. I'm pretty sure every generator and/or grill comes with one, and it has warnings about using it INDOORS. If you're that lazy where you can't take the time to properly read how to operate equipment like that, then you can blame no one but yourself for being a (all together now) DUMB fark. Only an idiot such as yourself could place blame on the equipment rather than the operator, even though the equipment comes with all the necessary operating procedures. People like you just need to shut the fark up and follow the herd elsewhere.

"Oh it's a tragedy" No, it's a shame more people don't remove themselves from the gene pool for not doing something as simple as reading. You want to file lawsuits left and right about how unsafe shiat is, but guess what -- only a idiots like you use the item in ways other than intended. OH that Preparation H should have a warning label "Not To Be Used Orally". Just save everyone the trouble and die. Right now.

2006-12-18 09:53:07 AM
Dave23,

If you were running into CO poisoning while running your NG stove, even after running all four plates at high for 'hours', you need to have your stove checked. It's probably not getting enough air.

Another solution might have been to turn them down.

As for people who think that this is a tragedy because those affected are most likely 'poor', well, they're somewhat correct. I don't care whether they were rich or poor, they're still dead and that's sad.

It's also a DARWIN event. Sorry, but poor often equals stupid and they're constantly running the CO warnings up here.

They were warned.

And I love how the definition of 'poor' keeps sliding. 'Poor' today have multiple bedroom/bath homes, vehicles for everybody with a license, multiple TV's and radios, cellphones, etc...

Poor to me means that you have to worry about meeting the food/heating bills while doing without the $40/month cellphone bill, $50/month cable, etc...

next time you're in a long line or heavy traffic, just think about whether we're better or worse off after having lost a few people with no common sense. then we can talk about the incident's "tragedy" status...

Eh... could be worse. There is just something about that kind of stupidity that urked me... especially calling the guy an asshole. I guess it's like seeing the people I have to deal with day to day go online and post. Some people just cant handle true stupidity being called what it is.

Yes because everybody buys their generators at a store and not at a garage sale or a flea market where the manual is never included. Family members do not give other family members their equipment without the proper manual and know how. Inherited stuff is always properly stored and saved with all the proper documentation and manuals. People who borrow things from their neighbors always want and ask for the instruction booklet while their children are freezing.

It's farking cold in Seattle and these people have been without power for several days; when you get desperate you don't always think things through.

If you weren't so ignorant, you'd be funny.

2006-12-18 10:01:43 AM
Same thing happened here in St. Louis a couple of weeks back, although not as many people got CO poisoning. I think a few also did it in last summer's week without power.

Problem was the ventilation I guess. The reason the burner died is because my apartment lost electricity. Which means no fan. So all CO had nowhere to go.

W/o electricity the gas stove was the only option besides candles, but damn was I worried. Only ran it as much as needed to not fall under 0 degrees (C), which it did during the night anyway. Good times, good times...

When Jimbo borrows the generator from Uncle Roy, does he give his common sense to Roy to hold as collateral? Just curious.

It's cold and dark here. It's also hard to find things to do after 5 when the sun goes down. Need more board games. I can't complain though.. most people got trees on their houses.

Ignorant -- sure. You got me there. Who isn't? farking stupid like the people who don't bother asking about the dangers of equipment they've *NEVER* used before? Guess again. Richard_M_Nixon shows a lovely decal that quite possibly comes on most of these heaters / grills / etc. But who bothers reading silly stuff like that? Pardon me while I blow dry my hair while sitting in a tub full of water.

As stated above, I've been in that situation, and if not for my sleeping bag I would've been outside my landlords door with a shotgun!!!

(Well, not really, since the problem was that he was abroad on vacation, and he's the only one with the necessary keys... but still)

But seriously, even more than my sleeping bag I fell in love with my thermal underwear!

electricmayhem: Richard_M_Nixon shows a lovely decal that quite possibly comes on most of these heaters / grills / etc.

It comes on all bags of charcoal. A similar label can be found on pretty much every generator and grill ever made. Check your propane cans, too... it's there!

Most of us don't need the warnings. Sadly, the people who DO need them are the same people who never read them.

In other news, talan123 learns how chlorine violently removes electrons from the atoms of his sinuses and lungs, causing extreme pain and a horrible death, by mixing bleach and ammonia together.
