(Reuters)   Attention all global-warming alarmists: 2006 was not the warmest year on record. In fact, it's not even in the top five. Okay, so it's sixth, but that doesn't mean anything, right?   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 683

i fail to see how debunking global warming would end climatology as a discipline or put climatologists out of jobs. i don't buy that they are being paid by shadowy anti-capitalist groups to produce this stuff, even if they later prove to be wrong. climatology would still be very relevant without global warming.

I was actually just trying to remove the emphasis on "lying" that was part of the original question posed by sigdiamond2000. I agree there is no reason on the part of climatologists to debunk global warming or climate change or whatever term we want to use. But I would argue that adding emphasis and immediacy to their cause is not going to hurt their careers. In fact, in the long run it might even lead to enough money being thrown at the cause that one way or another we can get conclusive proof of whether or not we really have a problem on our hands.

but science's conservatism is by and large a good thing, and by and large has kept it on the right track. i still trust the experts.

I agree with your first sentence wholeheartedly but the commercialisation of science has made me more cynical when it comes to that "trust" part.

Please forgive the lateness of my reply - Ringo Starr

I fondly remember farker Brockway, who "proved" there was global cooling using data from 2002 (second hottest year on record), 2003 (third) and 2004 (fourth. Since the trend was downwards, we were all going to be in for glaciers.

If there are no fires the firefighters lose their jorbs.
That's why there are so many climatologists holding their lighters lit under research thermometers all over the world. They also get doctors to cooperate and poison global warming deniers.

Didn't like the novel that much, but I agree with your last sentence, completely.

Skinnyhead et al.

Regarding methane:

http://www.epa.gov/methane/scientific.html

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, and humans are contributing to its increase in the atmosphere. However, the methane concentration is about 100 times lower than CO2, so it's total contribution is much smaller than that of CO2 to warming. Also, methane only has a 12 year lifetime in the atmosphere, while CO2's lifetime is over a century. So, yes, it's part of the picture, but it's not nearly as big of a problem as CO2.

I'm still undecided about global warming, but you can't just say it's scientifically proven that it is happening based on the studies. It's not like we have a control Earth to play around with or anything, so there will always be doubt.

Significant bias exists on both sides. There's been some recent data to show that ALL studies have a preponderance towards successful results. Why? Because results that say "this didn't work", or in global warming's case "everything is fine" don't get you any more grant money to do more studies! Bias doesn't have to be malicious or even conscious; that's why we do double-blind ones to weed it out.

However, I would just like to see someone give me a hypothetical example of what piece of data could be used to disprove global warming. I seem to hear that any and everything is a cause, whether it's torrential rains or droughts, hot or cold weather, and more or less hurricanes. If everything is an inidicator of global warming, I have a really hard time with that.

Captain Obvious

How arrogant to think that you, as an insignificant human on this fast planet can affect it's climate.

Captain Obvious, you ignorant slut. It is unlikely that ONE person can affect the planet's climate, but the combined might of 6 BILLION people, burning fossil fuels, surely can. Consider also that human beings have directly caused, and ARE causing, the extinction of numerous animal and plant species, and tell me again that "insignificant humans" can't affect the planet.

Rational Exuberance

Exactly, every theory is equally as likely. We don't have a control Sun to play around with either, that's why I said earlier I refuse to believe it is hotter than Earth. In fact, everything we know about the universe is wrong because we can't test it on a lab, the only way to produce scientific knowledge. Who knows, the earth might be a mere thousand years old! Nobody ever experimented with substances on a lab for millions of years yet, so we have no way of knowing! Global Warming obviously can't have such an ominous effect on the Weather! That is preposterous.

It doesn't matter that one year didn't crack the warmest year on record. The scientific fact is that in the past 100 years, correlating with increasing industrialization, the temperature has varied by 0.6 of a degree. Global temperature has never fluctuated more that 2 degrees in either direction, however those fluctuations have occurred over 10,000 year periods. It's the rate at which the atmosphere is changing that is alarming, not whether its too farking hot or too farking cold in a specific geographical location.

Ambitwistor: Are you under the impression that climatologists are unaware of variations in solar irradiance?

Perhaps, like me, 3boys' head hurts at all the people on here rushing to the conclusion "Oh noes, MAN IS CAUSING TEH GLOBAL WARNMING!!!PANIC!!11!1ELVENTY11!!MANBEARPIG!!!11!!!1!!" without taking certain meta-factors into account. The Earth was in the grip of a cooling trend in the little ice age, and then Boom! Head Shot! About 1850 or so, temps began spiking upwards, inline not with the industrial revolution that everyone would love to pin it on, but an increase in volcanism, most notably Krakatoa. Also, the sun has shown a slight, but noticeable increase. That heat, over time, has to go somewhere. It doesn't just disappear.

Plants grow more adding to the carbon cycle. More plants>more animals>more carbon>more resources being used. We get this material every day from space. Comet dust, and meteorite dust is swept up by our atmosphere adding tons to the earth annually. The increase in solar heat and light converts it into well, us and everything around us, all the time. Try and stop that from happening, with an ad campaign, or a movie.

/ We are stardust/ we are billion year old carbon. Joni Mitchell had it right.

This thread is far too long to be a useful discussion. I just popped in to ask a question. Is there a way for one of you al gore dick suckers to tell the martians to stop burning fossil fuel since their planet (Mars) is warming at the same rate as our planet (Earth).

/was that wrong?
//should I not have said that?

2006-12-14 02:12:00 PM
shipofthesun Well, apparently, the moon does something with that extra heat. or maybe some invisible radiator. But the Earth absorb it, and have to do something with it?

Bad comparison. Earth's moon does not have an atmosphere. Look at Mars, Jupiter and some of Jupiter and Saturns moons. I recall they are also undergoing climate changes of this type. Not sayin the sun is causing it all, but 50% based on some recent studies: http://www.springerlink.com/content/r2n447034x15v087/

squat

I don't believe in Earth's global warming, but I sure do believe in Mars' global warming, since there is a whole lot more trustworthy data on that, as opposed to the tons of bullshiat data for Earth. Also, if it was the case that both were happening, it is so obvious that they are correlated, it was the Sun all along! Boy, the scientists are going to slap their foreheads for not thinking of the Sun.

You should really give Sunny Ray a chance, though. He has a way of making excellent points while confusing the hell out of the weak of sarcasm detecting. This ultimately leads to humerus exchanges that, if not in my daily Fark diet, makes this a much less interesting place.

shipofthesun:

When you take both volcanism and variations in solar forcing into account, you don't get anything like the contribution that CO2 greenhouse warming produces. It's easy to say, "Everybody's wrong about X, it's probably Y instead" when you don't actually try to calculate the effects of X and Y.
