Welcome to... the rest of the world!

2006-12-12 11:38:22 AM
*snort*

That was funny.

Who cares? If you plan on leaving the farking country take your farking passport. Canada and Mexico may be our neighbors but their still different countries. Are people that dense?

Like anyone who owns a Toby Keith CD plans on leaving their county, much less the country.

2006-12-12 11:40:22 AM
Umm...is that really unreasonable?

2006-12-12 11:41:01 AM
That is for air travel only. Land travel is still passport free until sometime in 2008 or so.

2006-12-12 11:41:29 AM
What about Americans who happen to abroad when those rules come into effect? Are they then stateless and screwed or do they merly have to wait until the local embassy or cosulat issues them a new passport until they can come home?

How much time and money does it take to get a valid US passport anyway?

2006-12-12 11:41:41 AM
Being as old and jaded as I am, I rarely laugh at headlines.

I chuckled at this one. Nice job submitter.

And now that I am 21, I have no reason to go to Canada.

Uh, so? I'm actually shocked that this is not already the way things work. It's not like getting a passport is something amazingly hard to do, hell there's a place in the farking mall I always go to where you just walk in, sign some papers, get your picture taken, and whammo you have a passport. Doesn't seem like too much to ask.

2006-12-12 11:45:05 AM
Has anyone mentioned that this rule only applies if you fly into the U.S. of A. from one of those godless havens for criminals and terrorists?

/just sayin

2006-12-12 11:51:55 AM
Why can't we be like the EU and allow insane Muslim terrorists to travel freely between the Netherlands and France and Spain?

2006-12-12 11:57:48 AM
Kanyon: Umm...is that really unreasonable?

There are a lot of very rural areas, like far northern Vermont, where it's a necessity to cross the borders to do things like buy milk. Or see mom. And often times, for people who live there, the $100 fee is a real hardship.

minoridiot: That is for air travel only. Land travel is still passport free until sometime in 2008 or so.

Not if Pat Leahy has his way. He was recently quoted as saying that proposal was DOA per the above reasons.

Loki-L: How much time and money does it take to get a valid US passport anyway?

I just got mine in June, went to the Federal building in Seattle and got it an hour later. Same day costs about $60 extra, or you could go to the post office and pay $90 but that takes 14-16 weeks.

/worth the extra $60 to same day it

2006-12-12 11:58:20 AM
I think a passport costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $90.00.

You live in Buffalo, you have no reason to live.

Here in Canada we are farked because we have to renew our passports every 5 years instead of every 10 years like most countries.
Big farking cash grab as usual by the government. No other reason.

2006-12-12 12:11:50 PM
Meh.

I always bring my passport when I went to the States, made life just that much easier. Plus a passport is useful in many many other ways.

As far as I'm concerned, the thread ended there.

biffman: we are farked because we have to renew our passports every 5 years

You pay $50 USD a year for TotalFark, yet you complain about having to pay $87 every five years to be able to travel? WTF?

2006-12-12 12:18:09 PM
This is stupid beyond belief. Mexico maybe, but Canada? Terrorists are able to forge passports, it's not exactly impossible.
I was rather disappointed when I went to Europe and only got one stamp on my passport the entire time, though.

Loki-L: How much time and money does it take to get a valid US passport anyway?

I lived in Germany for awhile and decided to renew over there. All it took was a drive up to the US consulate in Frankfurt and a few hours. It wasn't too expensive. Quicker than my original one I got in the States.

/pre 9/11, no idea what it involves now

They entered the country legally. Even by today's supposedly stricter standards (though they may have had shampoo in their carry-on bags when they entered the country).

I'm glad we get to be punished for a few terrorists' actions.

I guess that means we won the War on Terror.

2006-12-12 01:02:58 PM
Ha... I'd love to see how this floats over in Nuevo Laredo. It won't make many people happy if they DO enforce it. Kings among Men in the line to walk back over the bridge into the US, I tell you. . . and I wasn't worried about getting a rusty knife in the back for even a minute!

/Donde esta la Pharmcia, por favor???

2006-12-12 01:03:46 PM
Finally. Now can we start enforcing our border laws?

Or should we either appease more or enact redundant laws?

A lot. Of each. And you need documents you haven't seen since Mom kicked you out of the basement, too...

There goes the Niagara Falls area tourist business.

2006-12-12 01:07:05 PM
In other news, increase in passports causes increase in stolen passports, resulting in more illegals entering illegally on stolen passports. Really how many San Diegans in Tijuana or Rosarita are going to stay sober enough to hang onto their passport?

Going into Quebec from New England:
French Canadian in a sweater, coffee in hand, smiles and says "Bonjour!"

Coming back into the States from Quebec:
Officer Farva stomps out in a flak vest and interrogates me for 30 minutes about "What hotel I was at" and "Did I have any meals with foreign nationals."

I just need the paperwork, thanks. You can alwys execute me next time.

That's ok. If HSA gets it way, you'll need permission from HSA before you can travel. This nonsense is scheduled to take effect in early 2007.

You can expedite it if you go to the post office, to0. Pay a few extra sawbucks and you'll get it in 7-10 business days.

Really? Whyso? What benefit does a passport give me? Its only purpose is to allow the governments to keep track of my movements. How does that help me in any way?

2006-12-12 01:09:43 PM
Considering that red-staters and mouth-breathers think owning passport is equated with being a socialist, it's a big deal for them.

But these are the people who can't name a single province in Canada, so screw them.

2006-12-12 01:09:49 PM
Yea I just got my passport renewed this year. Only took about 8 weeks for them to get it to me.

/picture looks horrible

If somebody were to blow up a couple of big buildings full of people in Canada, I guarantee you that'd change.

I got my passport the slow cheaper way and it still came in about 2 weeks. That was in 2002.
