Welcome to America, where the people want to earn 30 bucks an hour at their job, and then spend 30 dollars for a DVD player at Christmas.

We're such a cultural melting pot that I'll fire your ass if you don't talk like me.

Good plan, very open-minded.

That's cool and all but said "man" is actually a woman.

2006-12-11 08:05:28 AM
Did he demand that they "speak English good"?

Registration required? Say it ain't so!

"English needs a boost, they say, in an era when using the language requires an extra step at ATM machines also offering Spanish."

MY GOD THE HORROR

2006-12-11 08:08:58 AM
I know how this person feels. I worked in an office with three women who spoke Spanish, and that's ALL they used to talk to each other... even across multiple cubicles.

The loud talking was bad... the loud talking in Spanish was worse.

Good article, mentions both sides of the debate. My grandfather came over from Germany, learned English here. Thought it was a very important part of becoming an American. I'm all for bilingual Americans. but America speaks English, if you live here you should too.

/hablo espanol un poco

He's beat out by the 50,000 other people who say you have to speak Spanish to get a job. Those who make "Bilingual only" postings can stick it up their a$$.

2006-12-11 08:09:46 AM
That's fine with me, just like it would be fine if he demanded they all speak Spanish.

Very. Being able to speak a language is a skill, wearing a tie is just a costume.

Still, this guy sounds like a putz. I can see wanting your customer service people to be able to speak English (and other languages), but to each other? Who cares? They would only need a basic understanding of English to do their jobs, they don't need English degrees.

The English Only bill in TFA was introduced by a Rep. from Villa Rica.

Pronounced Vil-luh Rick-a.

There's a joke in there somewhere.

Excellent idea! Now if we could just get the Koreans believe that in America we are required to pay taxes.

Not that I think these racist asshats ever actually attempt to broaden their cultural horizons by traveling overseas, but I wonder if they're as horrified at ATM machines all over Europe offering "English" as an option in non-English-speaking countries.

Somehow, I don't think so.

I know, man. I hate it when postings say "must have engineering degree" or something. That's totally discriminatory towards people who don't understanding engineering. So what if the job demands it?

I must have deja vu. Unless this is the established zeitgeist, are they inferring that the language du jour is English and that any other language would impinge upon the modus operandi of the business? That's loco - unless I'm missing a certain je ne sais quoi?

Maybe he's a control freak, and wants to know what they're talking about. Either way, his business, his rules.

Let the market decide if this is what people want.

Please.

Georgia is a right to work state. You can let someone go at any time you want to.

So does that mean no more ebonics??

sepuku2: Excellent idea! Now if we could just get the Koreans believe that in America we are required to pay taxes

HA! So true, but that's just immigrant Koreans. Their first generation children completely skip the middle class and grow up to be doctors, so the tax man basically comes out ahead with those guys.

From TFA: "I told him if he learns English, he can own his own business," Northrup said. "If not, he'll just work for me."

I'm sure it's useful to know English to run a landscaping company. But I can't imagine that anyone runs a landscaping company in Atlanta without knowing some Spanish, either.

That woman (yes, woman) needs to get out of Virginia Highlands once in a while. Immigrants spend money, too--perhaps they just don't feel terribly welcome in her establishment.

as an emmigrant from the US, I know respecting foreign cultures and accepting immigrants and tourists is important. i like atms with language options.

however, as a crazy bastard who went ahead and learned japanese, i say learn the language of where you live or go straight the fark home.

seriously, if you can't speak a least a little of the native people's language of a country after a few months living there, you shouldn't be allowed to stay.

In other news, Americans still angry at Parisians who refuse to speak English ...

2006-12-11 08:31:22 AM
hah. he wouldn't last long in my line of work.
i don't appreciate having to learn another language, just to be able to work in my country. but there it is.

2006-12-11 08:33:05 AM
I got here late, but please tell me that none of you english-only activists are anything other than pro-nanny-state.

Because anyone who's for free markets but anti-bilingualism just wants the government to control the market of language.

/think about it.
//no, really think about it.
///then think about why all of the mexicans and the koreans and chinese are over here - they're just following the products they made back home.

American living in france for the last ten years you don't. There are no offical papers written in any language but french. All foriegn documents must be translated by a certified translator. Why should it be different in the states? Never did understand why all the signs in the drivers license office in Jacksonville Il. were in english and spanish.

Heh, I remember when I was in University in Montreal the language police (yes, language police) got a complaint from a citizen about a parrot in a pet shop that only spoke English words, thus violating the speak French only at work law.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Because America doesn't have an official language. I'm all for having one, but until we do, you can't complain about a town wanting to be inclusive. Canada has done it for a while now, and they haven't crumbled to the ground.

So wait they can't speak spanish when they're working for him, that's rather lame, if they want to talk to each other in spanish, I would have no problem.

The problem would be why they heck would they be speaking,

instead of speaking spanish on his dime it should read

SPEAKING ON HIS DIME,
/mwhahaha
//I'm going to force my employees to wear pieces of flair or their fired
///nice commercial of that for WOW
