I looked for it from here in SC, no luck...A compass would have helped..

We can launch anything into orbit. The tricky part is getting it back.

2006-12-09 09:40:03 PM
I hope it doesn't assplode apart like the Challenge.

Did the "y" fail to reach orbit?

Why won't they get to the ISS before Monday? Do they go sight seeing first?

2006-12-09 09:42:28 PM
Godspeed.

2006-12-09 09:42:33 PM
Sorry to the many bloodthirsty asshats who were watching intently for it to blow up.

MeatwoodFlack: I hope it doesn't assplode apart like the Challenge.

It can't asplode like the Challenger. The Challenger asploded during launch. It can asplode like the Columbia, which asploded during re-entry.

The shuttle, and manned spaceflight in general, are crucial for the survival of human civilization.

We should be striving for permenant offworld settlements as a goal more important than any other.

/It can be argued whether humanity is worthy of survival. But there you go.

Did the "y" fail to reach orbit?
Probably knocked off by debris.

2006-12-09 09:43:30 PM
There aren't any shuttle haters, just a disproportionately large number of whiners about shuttle jokes.

McKeesport Beer Baron: Why won't they get to the ISS before Monday? Do they go sight seeing first?

They have to catch it first. ISS has a pretty high orbit

/What I learn about space I learn from orbiter.

yep! ran outside to see it go. i still miss Columbia and Challenger though.

It still seems like yesterday when i think about it.

but it is cool to see progress. and hell, we built a good fleet. it was the arseholes in charge on both of those problematic ones.....

I SAW IT! I SAW IT! Wahoo. Nightlaunches are SOOO pretty. The whole sky lights up orange and you can watch the little lance of flame shoot through the clouds. And I'm all the way on the other coast.

/Wish they'd do more launches at night.

i didnt get to see it was watching it on the computer and would run out back to see if i could see it...

there was one i saw go across the sky a few years ago here in va, across southeastern horizon just a bright dot speeding through the field of view... pretty cool

and when i was a kid you could see the challenger debris/smoke trail up and own the coast of florida... i still remember that to this day... one of those things you cant forget..

/just sad ididnt get to see it streak through the sky this evening but watched it live, where was the thread for live viewing?

ISS is moving in orbit, and the Shuttle has to match that orbit, so once it gets into the same orbit as the ISS, it still has to catch up to it. It's not like it's stationary and they can go straight there and stop.

Imagine swinging two weights on the end of string. One is already spinning, and you want to start spinning the other one and have it meet - but not pass the first one. You can't just throw it straight at the first rock, and if you go much faster than it, you'll fly right by it when you do catch up.

In the TotalFark Discussions.

And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

60 miles to the north of the pad and it was AWESOME! Glad to see the night launches again.

Drove over and watched it from my parents front yard in Central Brevard. All I can say is 'Spectacular'!!

Will it be a night landing as well, because it's still 6 months until the Fourth of July and I miss fireworks.
/so sorry
//haven't they built replacements for those old heaps?

You know I heard it go off (I live on east 50), but thought it was farking Speedworld so I didn't go outside. Last I heard they were going to scrub tonights launch too. Nuts.

It sounded cool, though. All the dogs in the neighborhood go off, and this big rumbling sound goes on for like a minute.

Neato!

I think this is the first time I've seen a Florida tag with nothing bad happening behind it.

The only reason it was launched at night was to avoid scrutiny. There is something really farked up going on in outer space.... and they don't want us to know.

...but I know, godamnitt. I know.

I caught a quick glimpse of it before it disappeared into the clouds. I'm a couple hours south of Cape Canaveral. Too bad the sky wasn't clearer here, but oh, well. Just hoping all goes well, and they all return safely. Still wondering what the point of the ISS is.

Still wondering what the point of the ISS is.

The ISS is there so they can have a reason to send the Shuttle up.

2006-12-09 10:13:15 PM
Yeah, it's just like K2 or Mt. Everest.... You still have to survive the trip down!

There sure are a lot of losers in this thread, hoping the mission fails.

Future fry cooks of America, I imagine. Go back to your sweetmilk and bedtime stories, kiddies. If your opinion meant anything, an adult would give it to you.

Here's hoping everything goes well up there.

the ISS reminds me of the winebago in "spaceballs"
