So what you're basically saying is that Churches in Britain are Churches.

2006-12-08 08:09:58 PM
They do it on TF too.

2006-12-08 08:22:43 PM
So it's like any other community-oriented church housing any other religion in the world.

2006-12-08 08:24:55 PM
you mean, people who believe in an invisible sky creature don't behave rationally?

hopefully it will die out soon.

Which is why almost no one goes to church in Britain. Duh.

The bible tells us that God is jealous, vengeful, and angry. He uses petty devices to test our love and loyalty.

Sounds like they are just emulating their creator. They are the truly faithful!

I remember church being a lot like that when I was growing up. It was kind of funny, but also very pathetic and sad. I think there's a certain type of person out there who thinks that by kissing the pastor's ass, they'll get closer to God or something. Or they're just the type of people who will suck up to whoever's at the top in any group setting. Also I think there are a lot of people out there who think that church is a good place to find dates, so there's this whole mating competition going on.

From TFA:

One difficulty is how to motivate the "settled blancmange" of the softly acquiescent majority, described by Dr Savage as "social loafers".

It's simple really. The Blancmanges mean to win Wimbledon.

See, that is what my husband had to put up with on and off during his 40 years of ministry.

Granted, our stories are not as exciting as those of disgruntled pizza boys, but that is the reason why there are a *huge* list of pastors who quit after a few years of ministry.

Plus, they leave because they know that after retirement, it's financial trouble.

To those applying for the ministry..."IT'S A TRAP!!!"

And if you ignore my warning, blessings and lots of luck.

It's just like any other micro-society. Things don't change because of a religious context. People are people.

It's the dawn of the age of aquarius...

or the dusk of the age of whatever it's called when you stop living in caves & start holy wars.

Was wondering when this would happen...I mean, the church has lacked real power since the time when it was ok to burn people at the stake...It turned from a dictatorship with absolute power into something else and people are realizing that...

Like any social system you switch from absolute control by someone, people will slowly try to figure out what they can get away with and not be killed...sure the threat of hell probably concerns some of them...most of them prolly just want to one up the next guy though...

It's always amusing when so-called atheists blame religion for people's natural compulsion to be bastards. If you don't believe religion was inspired by a supernatural agency, why would you claim religion itself has the magical power to make us behave differently than we would otherwise? We invented religion, you silly people, and if it seems xenophobic and judgmental, it's because we ourselves are so xenophobic and judgmental, we can't seriously believe in any ideology that doesn't contain those elements (see politics, patriotism, nationalism, racism, cultural pride, or any other belief system you care to name. They're all tainted with our inbred hates and insecurities).

So grow up and face the facts. "Religion" isn't the boogeyman, because there are no boogeymen. There's only us, and we're monstrous enough for anybody.

How bout this....this Sunday we chain all the churchs, Synagogues, and Mosques closed, and then burn em down.

Problem solved.....kinda.

Those guys and chicks that like swinging knockers in their hands will still be out there.
And those damn Jehovah Witness types are definitly some freakin religous cockroaches, they're almost impossible to get rid of......Oh what to do, what to do....

Actually I think that most churches in Britain are less about religion and more about tradition and stuff.

You don't go to the church because you belive the same way that some chuchgoers in the US do you go because you have always gone there. Its a social club more than anything else.

The problems described in the headline are not so much the result of any specific religious beliefs, but mostly of human nature.

Its pretty much what people will always do if you get them together in a group without giving them a pressing need to actually accomplish anything.

Something doesn't have to be supernatural to have the power to change people.

Religion is irrational and authoritarian. I think we can all agree on that. If religion was rational, you wouldn't need faith. Also, the Bible is full of rules, rules that if you don't obey, you go to hell forever. So, religion is irrational and authoritarian.

Here's the problem, believing in someihing irrational in one aspect of your life is dangerous, because it encourages people to be irrational in others. Also, authoritarianism is bad because it convinces people to unquestioningly follow a leader. "God told me to." has been used as an excuse to commit a number of crimes from Yates drowning her kids to Hilter killing off 13 million people.

On the other hand, there's nothing in Atheism that can result in such crimes. Sure, Atheists can commit these crimes, look no farther than Pot Pol for proof of that, but Atheism itself can't be blamed for it.

Just so we are clear, you also can't blame religion for everything it's followers do. McViegh was a Christian, but the terrorist attack he carried out was political, not religious.

One last note, I would say the only other force as bad as religion is politics. Politics and ignorance.
